"Give till it hurts/'-if'5 a saying used to encourage generosity, particularlyfrom the pocketbook. Another way to say it is "Give till you feel it." Manypeople give generously from their excess, but these slogans invite a givingfrom the core of ourselves and our material possessions.
This kind of giving is clearly modeled by the woman in today's readings. Thewidow in r Kings gives Elijah her last scraps of food-it's all she has in timeof sever drought. Her trust is rewarded with a lasting supply of food for herhousehold. ln today's Gospel, Jesus commends the widow for her
contribution to the treasure, though it's a meager amount. He sees thatshe's giving from her poverty-"all she had." Her generosity outshines thewealthy contributors with their large sums of money. And, of course, Jesus
is the ultimate model of selfless generosity, pouring out his life on the cross.
"Giving till you feel it" is one way to frame this kind of gener:osity. But I
wonder if "giving till they feel it" is another-giving so others can feel thatyour heart is in the gift. Fro some, that means giving more money so theneedy can feel relief from hunger or homelessness. For others, this means
giving our undivided attention to a friend or colleague who needs a listeningear, giving fully of our Iimited time so they feel heard and embraced. Fro
parents, this means giving our limited energy to a sick child in the middle ofthe night, giving completely so the child feels security and healing. This
kind of generosity-from the core of our lives-is the model Jesus left us.

d e ar PAD Rf,
My cousin was telling me about a liturgy in which people pray
euery hour oJ the day. Is the something all parishes are supposed to
doing?
Dear Linda,
Linda
Your cousin is talking about Liturgy of the Hours. Alsoknown as the divine office or breviary, Liturgy of theHours consists of a set form of psalms, canticles, prayers,
Scripture, and meditations for every hour of every day. Itsformat has changed little since the eleventh century.
The Catechismof theCatLnlicChurchcalls it "an extension ofthe Eucharistic celebration" (1178). For this reason, pastors
are encouraged to celebrate the principal hours "in churchon Sundays and on the more solemn feasts" (1175).
Clergy and religious are obligated to pray the Liturgy ofthe Hours. Lay participation is optional and can be done as
a group or individually. Books of prayers and hymns forpeople who want to pray the Liturgy of the Hours on theirown are available from book retailers, including LiguoriPublications.
The Liturgy of the Hours "is distinguished from otherliturgical actions by the fact that it consecrates to God the
whole rycle of day and night" (General Instruction of the
Liturgy of the Hours, 10). In this way, the Church fulfills the
Lord's precept to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians
5:17).
For more information on Liturgy of the Hours, call 800-
325-9521 or visit liguori.org.
