Pastor’s Letter October 31, 2021 Dear Parish Family, At Mass each week, right after we hear the word of God and listen to the homily, we profess what we believe. Using the words of either the Apostles Creed or the Nicene Creed we say aloud and together exactly what we believe. The Apostles Creed is very ancient and was probably a creed for new converts who were being baptized and becoming disciples. The creed is simple and focused. We believe in God the Father, in his son Jesus, and in the Holy Spirit. The creed of Nicaea is a little more complicated and was written to reflect the teachings of the Council of Nicaea which answered arguments and questions about the divinity and humanity of Jesus and the oneness of the Father, Son, and Spirit. It was written at a time of crisis when the very divinity of Jesus was being denied by a movement called Arianism. While Christianity has these carefully written statements of faith, Judaism, and particularly Judaism at the time of Jesus, did not have a statement of faith that is anything like the creed we pray at Mass. What they did have were the law and the teachings of the prophets. It was keeping and loving the law that made one a member of Judaism. And still the great teachers argued about which of the laws was most important. And so in today’s passage the writers and teachers of that law ask Jesus for his opinion. Which of the many laws is the greatest? Jesus answers that it is the one that teaches us to love God with all that we are and all that we have. In other words, what makes them believers and makes them belong to God is this:
Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Now I don’t think there is a good point to asking which creed we like more—the Creeds we read at Mass or the law Jesus quotes to the scribes. Both of them are about our friendship with God and how it deepens. The passage this week in the gospel says that our friendship grows when we love with everything we have and when we love one another in the same way we love God. Our creed each week says that our friendship grows when we are of one mind in our belief, when we are undivided in our understanding of God. This weekend we begin November, the month of all saints and all souls. It is the month of every believer, whether they are with us in the present, whether they have been friends in this life who have gone into the kingdom of God. Someone once described the Christian life in this way—it is a life of friendship for the friends of God. November is a month of all saints and all souls. It is a month of friendship when we discover our oneness in faith with all those who are God’s friends.
To Love the Lord our God
Sincerely yours in Christ!

Calling All Saints
October 31, Halloween, originated as All Hallows’ Eve, or the eve of All Saints Day. All Saints Day, a holy day in our church calendar, is a day
that remembers persons whose lives made a difference but who are not officially named as saints.
All Saints Day celebrates the great host of anonymous saints who many
not be named but are held in the embrace of God. Canonized saints have their day on the calendar, but this is the day for everyone. On this day we also remember those whom our hearts have personally known and loved, those who nourished and created us as human beings and have helped
us through rough times.
These are beloved faces held in living memory. We dare to trust that Holy
Wisdom has not allowed them to perish but has received them into unimaginable life forever. Entrusted to God’s mercy, these are our saints.
From Friends of God and Prophets by Elizabeth A. Johnson
New to the parish or have a child in grade 1? We have begun religious education for this year. Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Moses spoke to the people, saying: "Fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life. Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers, to give you a land flowing with milk and honey. "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today." Second Reading: Hebrews 7:23-28 Brothers and sisters: The levitical priests were many because they were prevented by death from remaining in office, but Jesus, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away. Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them. It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens. He has no need, as did the high priests, to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did that once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever. Gospel: Mark 12:28-34 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, "Which is the first of all the commandments?" Jesus replied, "The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, 'He is One and there is no other than he.' And 'to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself' is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Reflection On the Gospel
October 31, 2021
…to love God with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices…
Can you imagine loving so completely, as completely as Sunday’s readings describe? Is it even possible for any human being? Think about someone or even something that you think you love above all else. Is that love all-consuming? Do any of us truly love without relying on “offerings” or “sacrifices” to cover for our deficiencies? And can any of us claim to love God even more than our greatest love for some earthly entity? These commandments may be first among all others; they certainly appear to be the hardest. Fortunately, we know that, as imperfect as our love is, God’s love is without blemish. Perhaps that is why Jesus told the scribe he was not far from the kingdom of God; Jesus understood how hard these commandments are for us, how incomplete our accomplishment. But I suspect he also appreciates our effort. He gave us the ultimate goal. Even if we can’t perfect it, let’s do our best to come close.
Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays
from 9 AM to Noon Pope Francis has declared this year to be time of intercessory prayer to St. Joseph. Joseph protected Mary as she gave birth to Jesus, he guarded Jesus from Herod’s attempts to destroy him, and he watched over the life and growth of Jesus with fatherly care. Now we ask Joseph to watch over and protect the lives of all, especially our children, born and unborn. Join us each week
Time to Sing Again After a long break our choirs are beginning to bring us beautiful music at Mass each weekend. Is it time for you join a choir? For more information please contact our music director, Dominick Abbate. You can reach him at: [email protected] (631)-873-7800
