Reflections ~ Reflexiones Pastor’s Message: STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY This Sunday we officially start in our Parish Church the program “Stewardship - A Disciple’s Response and A Way of life.” Time, Talents, Treasure - These are the three areas of stewardship. By accepting the Biblical model of returning 10% of the "first fruits" to the Lord, we attempt to utilize at least 10% of our time for prayer, reflection, and works of mercy and ministry. (Here is the average American weekly schedule of 168 hours: working -- 50 hours, sleep-ing (45), eating (15), watching TV (12), socializing (6), shopping (5), movies/reading (4), hobbies (3), sports/exercise (2), religious or stewardship activities (1) hour which is only .6% of the weekly time while the Stewardship target is 16 hours. By the age of 50, the average American will have spent 11 years in front of a television!). Our individual talents are difficult to fit into a tithing model of returning 10% to the Lord, but in true Christian hu-mility we recognize that the gifts that are uniquely ours are not to be "hidden under a bushel," nor to be used solely for our own satisfaction and profit. Rather, our talents are to be used to glorify the Giver by using them wherever they are needed, in our parish or in the wider community. Jesus reminds us: "Where your heart is, so is your treas-ure." When we commit to a life of Christian Stewardship, we commit to norms different from those of society in general. How does our society spend its treasure? (Statistics are total per year. Soft Drinks $44 Billion, Diets $29 Billion, Pets $8 Billion, Cut Flowers $3.4 Billion, Sports $35 Billion, Candy $12 Billion, Video Games $5.5 Billion, Skin Care $2.7 Billion, Religious $1.7 Billion = 1.3% of the total expense).

Mensaje del Párroco: Esta semana oficialmente comenzamos nuestro programa: “Mayordomía-La Respuesta del Discípulo y una forma de vivir.” Tiempo, tesoro y talentos: Estas son las tres áreas de la mayordomía. Al aceptar el modelo bíblico de darle al Señor el diezmo de nuestros ingresos, estamos haciendo el intento de utilizar el 10% de nuestro tiempo para orar, reflexionar y hacer obras de caridad. En una típica semana de 168 horas en nuestro país ocupamos nuestro tiempo: trabajando: 50 horas, durmiendo, 45, comiendo, 15, mirando TV, 12, socializando, 6, comprando, 5, mirando películas o leyendo, 4, hobbies, 3 horas, haciendo ejercicios o deportes, 2 horas, y adminis-trando las cosas del Señor, solo una hora. Esto representa el 0.06% de nuestro tiempo. Si realmente diéramos el diezmo, deberíamos estar dando 16 horas a la semana. Para cuando uno llega a los 50 años, el promedio de los americanos ha pasado once años frente al televisor. Es difícil dar el 10% de nuestros talentos al Señor, pero sabemos que como cristianos, debemos de tener la humildad de poder com-partir lo que tenemos, no por vanidad o por sacar provecho propio. No debemos esconderlos en un costalillo sino utilizarlos para el bien de la parroquia y de la comunidad en general. Dios nos recuerda que tu tesoro es donde está tu corazón. Cuando aceptamos ser mayordo-mos y administradores de Cristo, nos comprometemos a vivir de una manera diferente a la del resto de la sociedad. ¿En que gastan sus tesoros? Las estadísticas nos enseñan que gastan $44 billones en sodas, $29 billones en dietas, 8 billones en sus mascotas, $3.4 billo-nes en flores, $3.5 billones en deportes, $12 billones en dulces, $3.5 billones en video juegos, $5.5 billones en productos para la piel, $2.7, y solo $1.7 billones, o sea el 1.3% de lo que se gasta.

Treasures from our tradition All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armeni-

ans, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Chris-tians sometimes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them. Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit every-where. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a confes-sion beforehand. Tradiciones de nuestra fe En 1682 unos negociantes encontraron una caja aban-donada en una playa al sur de El Salvador. Como no pudieron abrirla decidieron llevársela al pueblito de San Miguel para conseguir con qué abrirla. Montaron la caja en un burrito y comenzaron su camino. Al pasar por la iglesia parroquial, el burrito se sentó y la caja se abrió

revelando una bella imagen de la Virgen. En aquel entonces el pueblo de El Salvador estaba divido por la guerra pero con la llegada de esta imagen milagrosa el pueblo buscó reconciliarse. En 1833 hubo otra guerra en El Salvador y los que salieron victori-osos prometieron a María no vengarse en contra de los perdedores. Por estos hechos se le concedió a la imagen el nombre Nuestra Señora de la Paz. Su imagen de madera tallada y vestida lleva una palma en la mano recordando un milagro donde por la intercesión de la Virgen de la Paz, Dios salvó al pueblo de la explosion de un volcán. Coming up soon: To Epiphany Parishioners: As our Parish continues on its journey of talking about Discipleship and Stewardship, as we move toward the end of 2014 and we enter the Advent season it is the perfect time to invite you to attend one of two informational evenings with the pastor. The first will be Friday, November 21st at 6:00 pm and the second on Saturday, November 22nd after the 5:30 mass in the cafeteria Refreshments will be served at these events. A detailed presen-tation will be given on the financial status of the Parish including a report on the debt and what are the projected needs of the Parish as we move into 2015. Each of us is a steward in carrying out the mission of Epiphany. As stewards we are all asked to see how we can bring our talents, our time and our treasures to see that this mission of bringing God’s message to his people is accom-plished.
