Dear Friends,

It is with pleasure that I welcome you to Evita, the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical about the life and death of María Eva Duarte de Perón (“Evita”), wife of Argentine President Juan Perón. The show debuted in 1978 in London’s West End and in 1979 on Broadway, where it became the first British musical to win the Tony Award® for Best Musical. Thirty-three years later, in 2012, the show was revived on Broadway. It starred Tony®-winner Michael Cerveris as Perón, Grammy-winner Ricky Martin as Che, Argentine actress Elena Roger as Eva, and was nominated for three Tonys®: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography (Rob Ashford), and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris). New to the revival is the Academy Award-winning song “You Must Love Me” from the film version of “Evita,” starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. Today’s production is by the National Touring Company that came of the Broadway revival.

Eva Perón fought for the rights of the infirmed, poor, and for women’s suffrage, which resulted in the creation of a feminist wing of the 3rd party in Argentina. In an effort to temper her controversial image perpetuated in pop culture, the government of Argentina embarked on a retelling of her life in the film Eva Perón: The True Story, which was Argentina’s Best Foreign Language Film submission at the Academy Awards in 1996, the same year the American film debuted. Her story continues to capture the world’s imagination, from her Dickensian beginnings, to her fame and populist appeal, to what is said to have been the 20-year odyssey of her corpse, which was stolen, buried anonymously in Italy, exhumed and sent to Juan Perón, then living in exile in Madrid with his new wife, Isabel, who, after he died, became president of Argentina and ordered the repatriation of Evita’s body back to her native country. Argentina’s president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, a Peronist sometimes referred to as “The New Evita,” has said that women of her generation owe a debt to Eva Perón for “her example of passion and combativeness.”

Eva Perón never transcended the role of First Lady of Argentina by fulfilling her dream of being elected VP of her country, though she was anointed the “Spiritual Leader of the Nation.” Her death, in 1952, at age 33, was marked by an elaborate state funeral.

Thank you for being here.

Enjoy the show!

I demanded more rights for women because I know what women had to put up with. - Eva Perón

Behind the Curtainwith Pittsburgh CLO

Pittsburgh CLO

Pittsburgh CLO is proud to provide one of the foremost internship programs in the region. Established through the financial support of the Pittsburgh CLO Guild in 1973, the Pittsburgh CLO Internship Program invites applicants from across the nation to apply for an impressive selection of internships. These students are given the opportunity to work for one of the most reputable theater organizations in the country and earn valuable academic credit at the same time. Interns are exposed to all the makings of professional theater by working directly with Pittsburgh CLO’s production and administrative staff members across 18 disciplines, including: Choreography, Company Management, Costume Coordination, Education, Hair Design, Lighting Design, Music, Production Management, Property Coordination, Sound Design, Stage Direction, Stage Management, Arts Administration, Cabaret Theater, Development, Graphic Design, Public Relations and Video Production.

From pre-production to opening night and everything in between, Pittsburgh CLO interns are involved in every aspect of producing a live performance, and are an integral part of helping to make our Summer Season a success.

This summer, Pittsburgh CLO enlisted the talents of 23 interns from colleges and universities across the country, including: Washington & Jefferson, SUNY Purchase, Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, Seton Hill, Point Park, Ohio Northern, Baldwin Wallace, Duquesne, Allegheny, Slippery Rock, Mount Holyoke and

Waynesburg. This year’s team of interns will leave Pittsburgh CLO in the fall with a wealth of knowledge, professional experience and tools to help them transition into successful careers.

For more information about the Pittsburgh CLO Internship Program, including application details, visit pittsburghCLO.org.

Pittsburgh CLO’s continued success is due in great part to the efforts of an incredible group of supporters who work tirelessly throughout the year to champion the advancement of musical theater in our great city. These advocates include community and business leaders who generously give of their time as members of the Pittsburgh CLO Board of Directors, the Pittsburgh CLO Guild and the Pittsburgh CLO Ambassadors.

The Pittsburgh CLO Board of Directors is comprised of 73 dedicated members led by Chairman Joe Guyaux and President Bill Lambert. Pittsburgh CLO Board members play an essential role in all aspects of CLO operations by providing the Pittsburgh CLO staff insight and guidance through their participation on 14 different committees. The Board provides crucial support through personal and corporate donations as well as attending performances and fundraising events.

The Pittsburgh CLO Guild was founded in 1955 and consists of 70 individuals who offer their valuable time and talents to produce fundraising events that further the pursuit of Pittsburgh CLO’s mission. Guided by the leadership of Guild President Kristen Lane and Guild Chair Patti Matty, their remarkable work impacts Pittsburgh CLO’s mainstage productions, the CLO Academy of Musical Theater, the CLO Internship Program, the Guild Scholarship Fund, CLO Mini Stars and much more. Since the Guild’s inception they have raised millions of dollars to support musical theater in Pittsburgh and organized highly-anticipated and successful social events, including the Annual Guild Ball.

The Pittsburgh CLO Ambassadors includes 90 volunteers from a variety of professional fields committed to improving Pittsburgh CLO’s education and outreach programs with their support and participation in theatrical, social

and educational events. Led by President Robin Randall, the CLO Ambassadors organize Pittsburgh’s favorite springtime event - the Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction, serve as vital School Liaisons for students in their local districts and work behind the scenes at the Gene Kelly Awards, which they helped to establish in 1991.

Together, these three groups help bring the magic of musical theater to life for over 200,000 area residents. Pittsburgh CLO is honored to have the support of these extraordinary individuals

who recognize the importance of this art form in our society, and who are working diligently to ensure the enduring legacy of Broadway-caliber entertainment right here at home.

For more information about these three groups and to find out how you can get involved, visit our website at pittsburghCLO.org.

He has been a Tony Awards® voter for more than 20 years.

PITTSBuRGH CLO has been a driving force behind the preservation, creation and promotion of live musical theater since 1946. As one of the largest regional musical theater organizations in the country, it is fortunate for the yearly support of nearly 200,000 audience members. In addition to producing fresh new productions of Broadway classics, the not-for-profit’s mission is to develop new works and showcase emerging talent, and has been credited with launching the careers of numerous artists such as Rob Marshall, Kathleen Marshall, Rob Ashford, Bernadette Peters, Shirley Jones and Susan Schulman. The organization’s dedication to musical theater extends beyond its six-show summer season at the Benedum Center to year-round programming at its 250-seat CLO Cabaret Theater, which recently saw the world premiere of Judge Jackie Justice, The Trials of Love. Its extensive education efforts include its CLO college intern program, New Horizons, and in-school programs such as the Gallery of Heroes and Creative Vision. Other ongoing initiatives include the Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theater, CLO Mini Stars, the Construction Center for the Arts, The Richard Rodgers Award, and the acclaimed Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater. The organization also founded and co-produces the National High School Musical Theater Awards. To further its mission to grow the art form, it has invested in and co-produced musicals currently on Broadway: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Matilda and Kinky Boots. Additionally: Evita, The Addams Family, Come Fly Away, Catch Me If You Can, 9 to 5: The Musical, Legally Blonde The Musical, Curtains, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Bombay Dreams, Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple, Flower Drum Song, Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life and Deaf West’s production of Big River. Pittsburgh CLO is a founding partner of 5 Cent Productions/Elephant Eye Theatricals, a producing consortium devoted to new musicals such as The Addams Family and the upcoming An American in Paris. In 2007, the organization assisted Disney Theatrical Productions in launching the National Tour of Disney’s High School Musical. Pittsburgh CLO is the subject of a 2007 film starring Jeff Goldblum titled “PITTSBURGH.” www.pittsburghCLO.org.

Pittsburgh CLO received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency administering an annual state appropriation for grants to the arts and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Allegheny Regional Asset District, a county agency created to support and finance regional

assets, including libraries, parks, cultural groups, sports and civic facilities, and to distribute tax relief to the 128 municipalities of Allegheny County.

The National Endowment for the Arts is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Endowment is the nation’s largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases.
