    Dear Friends,

It is with pleasure that I welcome you to Evita, the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical about the life and death of María Eva Duarte de Perón (“Evita”), wife of Argentine President Juan Perón. The show debuted in 1978 in London’s West End and in 1979 on Broadway, where it became the first British musical to win the Tony Award® for Best Musical. Thirty-three years later, in 2012, the show was revived on Broadway. It starred Tony®-winner Michael Cerveris as Perón, Grammy-winner Ricky Martin as Che, Argentine actress Elena Roger as Eva, and was nominated for three Tonys®: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography (Rob Ashford), and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris). New to the revival is the Academy Award-winning song “You Must Love Me” from the film version of “Evita,” starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. Today’s production is by the National Touring Company that came of the Broadway revival.

Eva Perón fought for the rights of the infirmed, poor, and for women’s suffrage, which resulted in the creation of a feminist wing of the 3rd party in Argentina. In an effort to temper her controversial image perpetuated in pop culture, the government of Argentina embarked on a retelling of her life in the film Eva Perón: The True Story, which was Argentina’s Best Foreign Language Film submission at the Academy Awards in 1996, the same year the American film debuted. Her story continues to capture the world’s imagination, from her Dickensian beginnings, to her fame and populist appeal, to what is said to have been the 20-year odyssey of her corpse, which was stolen, buried anonymously in Italy, exhumed and sent to Juan Perón, then living in exile in Madrid with his new wife, Isabel, who, after he died, became president of Argentina and ordered the repatriation of Evita’s body back to her native country. Argentina’s president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, a Peronist sometimes referred to as “The New Evita,” has said that women of her generation owe a debt to Eva Perón for “her example of passion and combativeness.”

Eva Perón never transcended the role of First Lady of Argentina by fulfilling her dream of being elected VP of her country, though she was anointed the “Spiritual Leader of the Nation.” Her death, in 1952, at age 33, was marked by an elaborate state funeral.

    Thank you for being here.

    Enjoy the show!

    Van Kaplan Executive Producer

I demanded more rights for women because I know what women had to put up with. - Eva Perón
