The key design, installation and commissioning requirements for mechanical fire and smoke control systems are contained in Australian Standards;• AS/NZS 1668.1 – The use of ventilation and air conditioning
in buildings. Fire and smoke control in buildings;• AS 1682.1 – Fire, smoke and air dampers. Specification;• AS 1682.2 – Fire, smoke and air dampers. Installation; and• AS 1670.1 – Fire detection, warning, control and intercom

Each of these Standards had major revisions for publication in 2015. AIRAH will be presenting seminars throughout Australia in March 2016 to provide an introduction to the changes and enable an industry briefing session.
The Standards Australia committee has prepared the documents for consideration by the Australian Building Codes Board for adoption in to the National Construction Code for 2016.Key changes:• Hot-layer smoke-control systems added• Carpark ventilation (including jet fans) requirement revised• Transfer of detection and initiation from AS/NZS 1668.1 to AS 1670.1• Construction and installation of fire dampers, smoke dampers and
air dampers transferred to AS 1682 Series• Smoke dampers and air dampers introduced to the AS 1682 Series• Baseline data requirements• Flame and spark arrestance in kitchen exhausts• Various clarifications to address known misunderstandings.

Brett Fairweather, M.AIRAH Brett is a member of Standards Australia’s ME-062 subcommittees responsible for Standards on fire and smoke control, mechanical ventilation in buildings and natural ventilation of buildings. He has represented local engineering practices since the 1990s and now runs a mechanical services consultancy to support other practitioners throughout the industry. He also represents AIRAH in the delivery of seminars and training related to mechanical ventilation, fire and smoke control, and maintenance of essential mechanical systems.
Cancellation and refund policyRegistration may be cancelled up to five working days prior to commencement of the course with participants either transferring to another course/event or receiving a refund less a 20% administration fee. No refund will be given where cancellation is 24 hours or less. In all other cases of cancellation the extent of any refund will be at the discretion of AIRAH.
