Veolia Environnement (formerly Vivendi Environnement)has announced it intends to sell a substantial part of theUS water activities of its USFilter business.

According to Veolia, it plans to refocus its NorthAmerican activities on services conducted under long-termoperating contracts in both the industrial and municipalsectors. The company's intention is to sell USFilter'sConsumer & Commercial business, i.e. Culligan andEverpure, along with the combined USFilter Systems andServices & Products business. It is anticipated that theproceeds will enable the company to reduce it net debt from�13 billion ($US15 billion) to �11 billion ($13 billion).

According to Veolia, it was forced to review thestrategy of its Water business in the USA following lowmargins for equipment sales in the first half of this year.As a result, the company has decided to refocus its Waterbusinesses in North America on services carried out underlong-term operating contracts for both municipal andindustrial customers.

The Culligan and Everpure businesses are leaders in bothresidential and commercial water treatment and havecombined annual sales of $740 million. The USFilterSystems and Services & Products (equipment and industrialservices) business is one of the largest water and wastewatertreatment equipment and associated services company inthe world and has annual revenues of $1.2 billion.

Veolia will retain USFilter's Operating Services andEngineering & Construction business, which is reported to

have a market share of over 40% of the municipal andindustrial outsourcing market, and annual revenues ofover $600 million.

Following on from the Veolia Environnement namechange earlier this year, Vivendi Water Systems, which ispart of Veolia Water and headquartered in the UK, hasrelaunched its purified water treatment activities under thebrand name 'ELGA Process Water'.

Last month Vivendi Water Systems’ Industrial divisionbecame known as ELGA Process Water, a brand ofVeolia Water Systems Ltd. The new brand willcomplement the existing ELGA LabWater brand, whichcontinues to provide leading laboratory waterpurification products and systems. ELGA Process Wateremploys over 350 people and operates across three sitesin the UK and one in Ireland.

Calgon Carbon Corp of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, isincreasing its existing odour control product portfolio byforming strategic alliances with two US companies.

The first will allow it to offer Bio Reaction IndustriesLLC's biofilter systems for odour control. The secondagreement will see it selling bioscrubber and horizontal crossflow chemical scrubbing systems that have beendeveloped by Harrington Industrial Plastics LLC'sEnvironmental Engineering division.

The products and systems from both companies will bemarketed for use in the municipal wastewater market inNorth America. Calgon says that it will offer the companies'products both separately and together with its owntechnologies to provide clients with odour control systemsthat are tailored to their specific needs. In each case,products will carry the Calgon name, but will be alsobranded as either Bio Reaction or Harrington. In addition,the two companies will provide a variety of support services.

Biofiltration is a popular technology for reducing bothodours and volatile organic compound emissions. Biofilterscan remove all odorous compounds found at municipalwastewater facilities and are considered to be anenvironment-friendly solution to odour problems.Bioscrubbing reduces emissions of hydrogen sulphide andammonia; odour causing compounds that are also commonlyfound at municipal wastewater treatment facilities.

Calgon claims that the Bio Reaction and Harringtonproducts have a number of innovative features whichmeans that they offer advantages over other systemscurrently available in the market place. These include asmaller system footprint, lower operating costs and morepredictable performance.
