1900 The Russian scientist named
Edurdovich Tsiokovsky formulated the mathematics needed of modern astronauts. He showed space travel was possible by the means of rockets.
1914 An American scientist Robert H.
Goddard patented the first rocket and is credited with creating and building the first liquid fuel rocket.
1926 Goddard (still American) launches the
first rocket proving his ideas on space travel and missiles.
1930 V-2 spacecraft was made and was used
as a missile by Nazi Germany in WW II. Then used by the USA and the Soviet Union in their space programs.
1944 V-2 spacecraft left Earths atmosphere
from Nazi Germany going four times the speed of sound. The first strike with the weapon was on Paris.
1954 American Viking rocket broke the record
for highest altitude reached which was 159 miles above the earth. The design was taken from the Germen rocket the V-2.
1957 The sputnik program is the commonly
known name of various robotic spacecraft missions launched by the soviet union. The first of them sputnik 1 was first man made object to orbit earth.
1961 On April 12 1961 soviet Yuri Gagarin
became the first man in space. Launching to orbit in the vostok 3KA-3.
1961 The Redstone rocket was the first large
American ballistic missile it was launched in 1961.
1967 The lunar orbiter program was a series
of five unarmed lunar orbiter missions launched by the USA. The pictures helped NASA choose where to land Apollo 11
1969 Apollo 11 was the first space mission to
land a man on the moon. Neal Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Then a famous quote was invented, “one small step for man one large step for man kind.
1971 Salyut 1 was the first space station of
any kind launched by the USSR. When the crew was returning a pressure-equalization vale opened prematurely killing all three.
1971 Mariner 9 was a NASA space orbiter
that was the first probe to orbit another planet. It took pictures of mars.
1972 NASA’s Apollo 16 was the tenth manned
mission in the Apollo program. It brought back 94.7 kilograms of lunar samples.
1973 USA’s first space station called skylab
was a lab in space. It was launched by a modified Saturn V rocket.
1973 The first US space station launched was
called sky lab. It did many experiments in space.
1976 Viking 1 was the first successful space
mission to mars. It took pictures of the planets surface.
1979 Skylab The USA’s first space station
receives pictures from the sun showing the corona.
1981 Columbia was NASA’s reusable space
shuttle. It completed 27 missions before it exploded.
1983 NASA’s second space shuttle orbiter to
be placed in orbit. It took a photo of Earth showing Australia.
1986 Mir is a Russian space station that was
a lab in space. I did reteach on human biology.
1990 NASA launched a space telescope
called the hubble space telescope. It is considered a valuable research tool.
1995 NASA’s Galileo was a unmanned
spacecraft to study Jupiter. It also did the first asteroid fly by.
1996 The American spacecraft Pathfinder
landed on mars and released the mars rover named sojourner.
1998 The international space station is a
research facility in space. It can be seen by the naked eye and is by far the largest cross-sectional of any other space station. It is set to be completed later this year
