Sitting high and pretty
in between El Paso and
Albuquerque, New Mexico’s
southernmost ski town offers
easy access to snow sports,
shopping, dining and art—all
against the backdrop of American
West history.
Where Cowboy Casual meets High Altitude AdventureRuidoso is a small town with a laid back atmosphere and attitude. Families come back time and again for its moderate tem-peratures, cool shopping, arts scene, his-toric sites and decidedly Western charm. For snow fun, the Winter Park Recreation Area offers tubing—day and night—with a magic-carpet lift and huge tubes to hold you and your little ones safely together.Ruidoso offers visitors a wide selection of lodging establishments, from cabins in the woods to luxury private homes. Choose from rustic to the fully outfitted, situated in neighborhoods that make it easy to walk to town for shopping, dining and live music. Ruidoso sports an alpine feel that is both outgoing and welcoming.
In love with its wild side, and wildlifeRuidoso is located in Lincoln County, the heart of historic Billy the Kid country. Our history is as Wild West as it gets. Ruidoso has a seriously artsy side as well; the town’s 50 or more art galleries compete with Santa Fe for choice and variety, while the world class 514-seat Spencer Theater is just a short drive from town. And if your idea of “wild” is getting up close and
personal with Mother Nature, deer, elk and bear wander our neighborhoods.
After a long day on the slopes, revitalize yourself with a plate of sizzling fajitas and a margarita or sip a fine wine with a mouthwatering steak. After you’ve gotten your second wind, kick up your heels in a cowboy saloon or rock and roll roadhouse, play some pool or sing some karaoke. At days end, enjoy Ruidoso’s most popular activity: deck sitting. Put your feet up and enjoy the scenic beauty that surrounds you.

“Ski Town of the Southwest” Red River has been known as the “Ski Town of the Southwest” for decades, but what makes this place so unique is not the “ski” as much as it is the “town.” Nestled right up against the Red River Ski Area is a place so special that skiers and snowboarders continue to come back year after year, generation after generation. Why? There are a number of reasons, but primarily because Red River is simple.
With two chairlifts that leave from the center of town, you’ll find 75% of the cabins, condos, and lodges are within walking distance of the ski area. No shuttle necessary. The less time you spend trying to find a parking space, the more time you’ll spend on the mountain (but just in case your feet get tired, Red River offers a free trolley to get you from point A to point B). Just imagine pulling in to Red River after a long car trip and never having to get back in the car until it’s time to leave. Folks from Red River simply put it, “Park & ski, park & ride, park & play.”

Located 20 miles southeast of Taos and two hours north of Albuquerque, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort built its legacy on an unparalleled commitment to being the most affordable, family-friendly resort in the Rockies. The uncrowded slopes, bargain (and often free) lift tickets, and family-fun vibe recently landed this gem of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains a spot on Sunset Magazine’s list of Favorite Family Ski Venues.
Sipapu is all about family, but don’t let that fool you: on Sipapu’s slopes, guests will discover incredible steeps and some of the best tree skiing in the state. Those in the know come back for the powder,
which often sticks around days after a storm.
This year, Sipapu’s management team will also oversee operations at neighboring Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, and the two mountains unleashed the New Mexico Power Pass, giving passholders unlimited access to both mountains plus free ski days at over 20 partner ski areas throughout the country.
With over 40 trails, five lifts, four terrain parks, slopeside lodging, a full-service ski school and rental shop, and riverside dining, Sipapu is the place for those looking to get away from everything but the snow.

High Altitude, High Desert, High AdventureLike the perfect equation, the magic of Los Alamos doesn’t come from any single element or interaction. Just 2,000 feet and five miles down the hill from Pajarito Mountain, the high altitude, high desert experience continues with some of the best recreation and cultural venues in northern New Mexico. With so many sunny days and more than 150 miles of trails throughout the town, hiking, running and mountain biking are year-round sports. World famous attractions are just a short drive away. The Historic and Creative Districts feature unique, family-friendly and free cultural assets, tours and award-winning museums that tell the story of Los Alamos.
This international community welcomes visitors at its parks, restaurants, pubs, cafes and other businesses along Main Street, Central Avenue and at the new Smith’s Marketplace—and proudly offers an attraction, a view, an experience for the explorer in every individual.
Complement your ski experience with swimming at the Walkup Aquatic Center, North America’s highest altitude facility or skate amid the pines at the only outdoor ice rink in New Mexico. At night, enjoy a variety of well-earned food, drink and entertainment options at the local restaurants, pubs and movie theater.
Where History Meets InnovationPush the boundaries on the slopes, then venture to Los Alamos to experience the stories that make it a top destination for history buffs. Downtown museums and area attractions facilitate an exploration through history, including the Valles Caldera National Preserve (a supervolcano!), the Bandelier National Monument, Los Alamos Historical Museum and Bookstore, and the award-winning Bradbury Science Museum—the official “window” to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, from the Manhattan Project to today’s scientific innovations.

Once shrouded in secrecy, Pajarito Moun-tain Ski Area will be revealing a lot morethis winter.
Perched on the Pajarito Plateau of the Jemez Mountains, just 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe, the ski area was founded in the 1950s by a few top-secret Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists looking for a way to carve some turns. Trail by trail, lift by lift, these volunteers created one of the most unspoiled ski areas in the state.
This winter, the management at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort will be handling Pajarito’s mountain operations, and the team is dedicated to expanding the mountain’s hours to include daily opera-
tions. Together, Pajarito and Sipapu also unveiled the New Mexico Power Pass, a unique season pass that offers unlimited skiing at both ski areas plus bonus days at over 20 partner mountains.
Lift lines at Pajarito are non-existent, and the alpine views are exquisite. The discounted lift tickets plus the laid-back atmosphere make it appealing for families, while the bump runs (the Fab Four are legendary with the locals) and killer fall line quicken the pulses of even the most seasoned skiers.
Don’t miss the local-favorite Saturday Beer and Band events, which feature live music and local breweries.

Urban VarietyDiverse cultures, authentic art and vibrant traditions have shaped the centuries-old story of Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city. There are so many fantastic outdoor activities that Outside magazine included Albuquerque on its list of Best Big Cities for Active Families. Just 20 minutes from Sandia Peak Ski Area via tramway, Albuquerque is a great place to start your winter vacation.
The city of Albuquerque sits more than 5,000 feet above sea level, but Sandia Peak reaches nearly 10,700 feet. As such, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy fresh snow on the mountain but rarely see snow once they retreat back to the city. They may even consider a trip to the golf course for a “Ski and Tee” getaway.
Visitors enjoy exploring the city’s many unique neighborhoods, diverse museums and even film locations. Recent film projects include The Night Shift, Good Kill and Breaking Bad’s prequel, Better Call Saul.
Shopping & DiningWith a variety of dining options from New Mexican to brick oven pizza to Asian street food and farm-to-table eateries, there’s something for everyone. Local microbreweries are popping up all over town and brewers regularly introduce new brew styles. Recently, Livability.com named Albuquerque #1 on its list of
Best Unexpected Beer Cities. Shoppers will enjoy the funky boutiques of Nob Hill, Southwestern specialties in historic Old Town, and upscale stores throughout the Uptown district.
Affordable & Accessible New Mexico’s largest airport, the Albuquerque International Sunport, is the perfect place to begin your vacation. It’s so wallet-friendly that Time.com named Albuquerque one of its 7 Great American Vacation Spots That Won’t Bust Your Budget, citing the city’s outstanding and affordable attractions, restaurants and hotels.
