According to a2012 Chinese Consumer LaundryStudy conducted by DuPont,respondents have complained ofproblems in laundry (70%), incompletestain removal (19%), wrinkledclothes/items upon washing (13%) andundesirable amounts of lather (11%)when using conventional brands.DuPont reports superior capability forPREFERENZ S 1000 in removing soilstains at varying amylaseconcentrations relative to othercommercial enzymes.

Croda’s Cirrasol Expel is a high-performance additive developed toimprove the stain-removing ability oflaundry care products such asmonodoses, stain removers anddetergents. The product improvesstain removal by >20%, in all threemain stain types.

IFF acquires Aromor to strengthen itsfragrance ingredients

International Flavors & Fragrances(IFF) has acquired Aromor Flavors andFragrances, a privately heldmanufacturer and marketer of complexspeciality ingredients that are used infragrances and flavours. While termsof the transaction have not beendisclosed, the Aromor operationswould have represented approximately$35 M of incremental sales to IFF’sresults in 2013 on a proforma basis.Aromor will become part of the IFFFragrances Ingredients business andis expected to be accretive to IFF’searnings/share in 2014.

Silicones and their alternatives

The definition and types of siliconesare discussed. A replacement forcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) andcyclopentasiloxane (D5) is beingoffered by Chemsil through CosmeticFluid 1585-ID, which is a mixture ofdimethicone and isododecane. Thiscan be used for hair, skin and bodycare, and colour cosmetics. TheInnovation Company also has theDedraflow range, which combineshydrogenated polyisobutene anddimethicone, to replace cyclometh-icones. Beantree (INCI: methylheptylisostearate) from Alzo International isa naturally derived replacement forcyclomethicones. BASF’s CetiolSensoft (INCI: propylheptyl caprylate)is an alternative for pigment wettingand dispersing. It provides a similarskin feel to D5 in cosmeticapplications. For hair care, MirasilBright from Bluestar Silicones is madeof C15-19 alkane and diphenyldimethicone to provide brightness andimprove hair management. For skincare, Koda has Polymatrix 12, amixture of polyacrylate-10, sodiumacrylic acid/MA copolymer, caprylylglycol and 1,2-hexanediol. It providesthe same texture and skin feel assilicone elastomers.

Berg + Schmidt offers lecithin fractions

BergaSom has been introduced byBerg + Schmidt. The new product,which is a line of lecithin fractions, issuitable for use in cosmetics. Itcontains soy-based phosphatidyl-choline and high-purity fractions basedon sunflower lecithin.

Godrej to expand base in Africa

India-based FMGC company GodrejConsumer Products Ltd (GPCL) is

planning to establish consumer goodsmanufacturing facilities in Uganda andTanzania. The decision was madefollowing four acquisitions in Africa:Kinky Group, 51% stake in hair carecompany Darling Group Holdings, theRapidol hair colour brand and thepersonal care brand Tura from TuraGroup. GPCL has existingmanufacturing facilities in Nigeria,Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa.The most recent revenue figure fromthe African operations was Rup 2.14bn (€25.1 M). Sales from Africanbusinesses account for 25% ofGPCL’s total international sales.

In-Cosmetics Asia, held on 29-31 Oct2013 in Bangkok, named Contipro’sDelcore active ingredient deliverysystem as a finalist in the ‘Best NewIngredient’ category of the Cosmetics& Toiletries R&D Award. Detergents industry outlines approachto a more sustainable future

The third Copenhagen HouseholdCare Sustainability Summit, organizedby Novozymes on 4-5 Dec 2013,relayed the importance of achievingsustainability without compromisingperformance and without additionalcosts to consumers.
