“Judgment on Israel and Judah”
Lesson: Amos 2:4-8
GOLDEN TEXT:
“Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Judah, and for
four, I will not turn away the punishment therefore; because they have
despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept His command-
ments” (Amos 2:4).
TODAY’S AIM:
“To see the elements of the judgment God was about to bring upon
Israel and Judah as a response to their sin.
INTRODUCING THE LESSON:
“To the casual observer, corruption and dishonesty of all kinds are
ruling the day. It seems there is no one to correct the evil that is
rampant in the world. God seems to sit silent as people ignore truth
and justice. Does He even notice what is happening? Israel may well
have wondered this, and so may we in our day. But God does see, and
we may be sure that at the right time and in the right way, He will act.
He has done so before, and He will again.
Are we in danger of God’s judgment? How close in terms of years
or of spiritual decay are we to the point that God will bring judgment?
What forms and for how long might that judgment take? How much
of God’s law (if any) can we expect a secular nation to follow? How
many of God’s requirements for a Christian can be violated before
God sends some form of discipline?
PRACTICAL POINTS: 1. Failure to obey God’s declared will is an expression of hatred
toward His commands and ultimately toward Him (Amos 2:4).
2. Sin is not just a mistake that can be easily excused; it is an evil
that is deserving of divine punishment (Amos 2:5).
3. Justice is demanded of all those who claim to follow the God of
justice (Amos 2:6).
4. Focusing only on ourselves will lead us to abuse others and
dishonor God (Amos 2:7).
5. The wicked find acceptance only from the gods they create, not
from the God who created them (Amos 2:8).

Sunday Church School Lesson continued:
CONCLUDING THE LESSON:
“Sin is sin, whether it is a “big” sin or a “small” one! There are
always consequences of sin. God can sovereignly withhold judgment for a
time or forgive it altogether as He chooses. But a nation or an individual
rejects God’s revealed will and the ways He has given for us to live at
great peril. God told Abraham that “the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet
full” (Genesis 15:16). This seems to imply that if they kept it up, a time
would come when God would act in judgment.
God, who loves us, loves us enough to correct us when we are wrong,
even when it comes down to allowing judgment to befall us. He purposes
to restore His children to righteous living and spiritual prosperity. The
unsaved cannot avoid sin. We cannot require righteous living of them.
If they did, they might conclude they had become worthy of salvation and
so never trust Christ and be saved. We who have trusted the Lord Jesus
are called to honor Him in all our attitudes and activities.
Every Sunday - 9:30 a.m.
Deaconess Charmaine Cook, Superintendent
“I Love You!”
I
I love You,
I love You,
I love You Lord today
Because You cared for me
In such a special way
That's why I praise You
I lift You up
And I magnify Your name
That's why my heart is filled with praise.
II
My heart,
My mind,
My soul belongs to You
You paid the price for me
Way back on Calvary
That's why I praise You
I lift You up
And I magnify Your name
That's why my heart is filled with praise.
