SHEAD & NICHOLSONon completing 45 years in business

Good financial management has been integral toShead and Nicholson’s success, says Des Shead.

Mr Shead said current administration manager andaccountant, Rick Hall, had been a key employee atShead and Nicholson, as was his predecessor DavidButton.

Mr Hall has been with the company for nine years, while Mr Button was at the business for more than 20years before his retirement.

Shead and Nicholson employee Ray Davey haslogged almost as many hours as his bosses over theyears.

Ray started with the company in 1973, just sevenyears after Des Shead and Kerry Nicholson founded theelectrical contracting firm.

Forty years ago he was one of only a handful of em-ployees, now he is one of 21. He is also the longest serv-ing current staff member.

Ray said he has noticed a few changes over the years, particularly the advent of technologies like telemetry.

Telemetry allows measurements or adaptations to bemade at a distance – an ability Shead and Nicholson’slarger clients have been able to employ.

Mr Davey said clients like Forbes and Bland shirecouncils are able to use telemetry to turn devices andequipment on and off or change settings via a radio unit.Pumps used on groundwater bores and at water filtrationplants are some examples, he said.

Ray said the introduction of telemetry and variablespeed drives, often used together, had changed the na-ture of his work.

Shead and Nicholson’s second longest serving em-ployee is Graham Everest, who joined the business inMarch 1980.
