Service Learning through Drafting and Design Technology
…for over 20 years!
“Service Learning is an educational experience and a teaching method that focuses on learning through community projects. Projects enable students to apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to benefit the community while students gain a deeper understanding of course content and the importance of civic engagement.”

Managing Student Teams
Why work in groups (teams) and what makes a project successful?
• Interdependence among team members – (school to work)• Accountability of individuals to team and instructor• Frequent face-to-face interaction to promote team goals• Development of social skills needed for collaboration• Critical analysis of group processes
From: Using student teams in the classroom – Ruth Federman Stein and Sandra Hurd - 2000
Defining the teams: The method
Four Stages of a Team:
Forming – Anxiety is high, goals are uncertain
Storming – Conflict can develop, how they are handled is an important part of the process
‘Norming’ – Roles are being shaped and defined, adjustments are being made, the group is being defined
Performing - When things are going as they should and project progress is being made as a cohesive unit
