A despairing Demeter allowed the earth to die. Humans were starving so Zeus told Hermes to bring Persephone back.
Hermes was able to steal Persephone back, but she had eaten four seeds of a pomegranate.
Eros shot an arrow into Hades’ heart which made him fall in love with Persephone whom he married and took to the Underworld.
Thus, Persephone lives with Hades in the Underworld four months of the year, but comes to the surface to be with her mother, Demeter, in the spring for the next eight months.
