The Under-14s Basketball team came runners-up in the
district. An excellent victory over New Line Learning
Academy put The Malling School through to the final.
They faced a very strong Aylesford team and despite
the match being a very close encounter Aylesford
eventually came out on top by 22 points to 16 with
Luke Martin scoring the majority of Malling’s points,
including 2 three pointers! Congratulations to the boys
for their excellent effort!
The Malling School Year 7 boys’ Basketball team also
reached the district final. Despite losing in the final, the
boys played extremely well, winning four group
matches and a semi-final. The PE department looks
forward to coaching the boys next year and, fingers
crossed, we can go on and win it.
Calling All Girls
The Malling School ‘Lions’ are looking for new team mates, so what are you waiting for?
Rugby is a fantastic way to keep fit and have fun. There are positions to suit every size and shape, so don’t let that hold you back. The girls have been working hard to promote a newly found passion.
We Celebrate World Book Day in Style
On Thursday 7th March
students and visitors at The
Malling School were surprised to
find the school full of famous
book characters. To celebrate
World Book Day 2013 the staff
had certainly pulled out all the
stops and came up with some
amazing costumes to remind the
students about the exciting and
imaginative world of reading.
The celebration continued with an
assembly where the ‘book
characters’ and cast of ‘Cats’
gave a performance where the
words to the famous Glee song
‘Don't stop believing’ had been
re-written into a new version:
‘Don’t Stop Reading!’
As well as having fun
on World Book Day the
students in Years 7, 8
and 9 got down to some
serious creative writing
work. They are
planning to publish their
very own ‘real’ book
which will feature their
stories and poems and
will act as a memento
not only of World Book
Day 2013 but also of
their time at The Malling
School.

7s go all green fingered on the allotment
7S are working with ‘The Beat Project’ on a series
of ‘Allotment Workshops’. We have already learnt
how to use the gardening tools safely and have
had a go at digging. In future sessions we will be
preparing the soil and planting seeds. We all
hope the weather will be a little warmer next time!

Our community
On Friday 25th January 2013
Year 7 students took part in their
first Malling School Health Day.
Students started the day with a
Gideon's assembly.
They were then divided into four
groups and had four fifty minute
presentations by a variety of
outside agencies during the
morning.
PC.Brooker held a session on
Internet Safety and the
importance of staying safe online.
Tonbridge and Malling
Borough Council held
presentations on 'Love Where
You Live' emphasising the
need for us to care for and take
ownership of our local
community.

gave talks on the work of the
Magistrates and the

On Tuesday 5th February all Key Stage 3 students saw the 'Is It Worth It' road show. The event is run by Amelix in conjunction with Kent Police and delivers a message outlining the dangers of anti-social behaviour. The road show combines music and dance performances to enhance the message being put across. Students got to take part in team activities to decide what the likely outcomes of different anti- social scenarios would be.
Our students are asked ‘Is it Worth it?’
their verdict.
Porchlight, a homeless
charity, gave students the
chance to reflect on the
dangers of living on the
streets.
The day was finished off by
a Rail Safety talk by PC
David Hillier who gave up
his day off to come in and
inform students of the
dangers of the third rail and
trespassing on the railways.

Food groups have been studying
how Food Technology is
influenced by culture. To
demonstrate their understanding,
students have to produce a food
product from another culture.
Sean De Costa made Sushi,
Nathan Hawkins made Falafel
with tzatziki, and Jack Dickinson
made Battenberg cake.
To raise money for Red Nose Day
students had a non uniform day
and each paid £1.50 to this worthy
cause. The students also played
the staff at basketball where the
students won by just one point.
The Tydeman students found a
more relaxing way to raise money
and encouraged everyone to put
their lose change towards their
coin mountain.

‘We Are Writers Book’
For parents
On World Book Day Students in Key Stage 3 became authors for the day, working on various ideas to promote creative writing. Their work will now be put into a book using the ‘Scholastic’ We Are Writers initiative which offers a unique opportunity for children to see their writing published in a real book. This is an incredible way to enthuse and excite any child about writing. Parents will even be able to buy a copy of the book containing their child’s work .

Governor News
At the Malling Holmesdale Federation Trust Board meeting in February, Bob Huelin from Smurfit Kappa was appointed foundation governor and, following staff governor elections, we are pleased to announce Kim Nash as our newly appointed staff governor. We would like to welcome both Bob and Kim and thank them for their volunteered support. MHF governors also said goodbye to Paul Stanley, parent governor, who retired from his position. On behalf of all governors, staff and students at MHF we would like to thank Paul for his time and valid contributions over the past three years and wish him well for the future.

A message from the Principal
A few years ago we started our Gifted Programme which was designed to accelerate the learning of the most able students. Each year we have built on that programme and are now starting to see the results of the work we have done as the students reach Year 11.
In the last magazine I told you about the achievements of the students in Mathematics, with over a third of the students in Year 11 already gaining a C or above in that subject. In Term 4 we received the results for the students who had taken English early and their results are looking to be even better. It is impossible to calculate the actual results that the students will be awarded as the exam boards are not releasing the grade boundaries until the end of the year this year (to avoid the fiasco of last summer). If the grade boundaries remain the same as they were in the summer of last year, however, almost a half of our Year 11 students will already have achieved a grade C or above in English. If the grade boundaries turn out to be the same as they were in January last year, 65% of them will have achieved a grade C or above! We also have a number of students who are very likely to be gaining the highest grade of A*. We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all of our
students who have taken their GCSE exams early (we also have some Year 10 students who have taken them) and are pleased for them that their hard work has paid off. Now that they have achieved good grades you may think that we would let them relax a little but we will not. We have already regrouped the students and put them on courses that will either improve their grades further or allow them to achieve even more GCSEs (Statistics and English Literature). Now is the time for Year 11 to really focus in the last few months before the final exams.
Year 8 and Year 9 have also been thinking about what they will achieve in the future this term. They are currently in the middle of choosing the subjects they will follow through to GCSE and A Level. This year we have developed a very flexible curriculum plan that creates many pathways that ultimately lead to university or higher level employment. Again there are opportunities for students to achieve their full potential at whatever level is appropriate for them.
I continue to be incredibly
Students’ hard work brings results
proud of the achievements of our students and I know that they will continue to work hard to achieve the very best that they can. I wish all students at an important stage of their education all the best in the challenges that lie ahead.
