The Rhode Island Spring Flower and Garden Show is a breath of fresh air – literally. From February 21-24, the RI Convention Center is transformed into a botanical para-dise filled with display gardens, vendors selling indoor and outdoor goods for the home and talks and demonstrations from renowned lo-cal and national personalities.

This year, the Flower Show pres-ents the Food and Wine Festival. Daily from 1-6pm, sample food from local restaurants and wines from across the country. Chefs give live cooking demonstrations, and

foodie celebrities will be signing cookbooks. In addition, the Flower Show includes fun children’s activi-ties and a bookstore by Westerly’s Other Tiger.

Tickets to both events can be pur-chased at www.flowershow.com, or at local AAA branches. Flower Show tickets are $19/adults, $16/students and seniors, $7/kids. An evening dis-count is available. Food and Wine tickets are $20, at the door and must be purchased separately for entry. Visit www.flowershow.com for more information. All informa-tion is subject to change.

Bartlett Tree ExpertsThe F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company is celebrating its 106th year in business, and invites you to experience the dominion of the beech, a tree integral to the wildlife and ecology of many older New England backyards, at its display garden Fagus: The Story of Beech within the New England Landscape. Whether it be wood for the fireplace, tannins for the microbrewery, beech-nuts for local fauna or picturesque canopies for shade and aes-thetic enjoyment, the genus, Fagus, is prominent within the lives who know them.

Mature tree preservation is a major part of Bartlett’s work. One of the most highly valued mature trees is the European Beech, and their garden features a canopy of European Beech trees. Walk under them to experience the romance that tree canopies create in an urban environment.

Founded by Francis A. Bartlett in 1907, the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company is the world’s leading scientific tree and shrub care company. Its current chairman, Robert A. Bartlett Jr., repre-sents the third generation of Bartlett family management. Bartlett has locations in 26 U.S. states, Canada, Ireland and Great Britain. Services include pruning, pest and disease management, fertiliza-tion and soil management, cabling and bracing, tree lightning pro-tection systems and tree/stump removal. 240 Highland Avenue, Seekonk, MA. 508-336-9330. www.bartlett.com

This year, RINLA is “Celebrating the Diversity of Green Space in an Urban Environment.” P.O. Box 984, West Kingston, RI. 401-874-5220. www.rinla.org

Big Sky LandscapingBig Sky Landscaping invites you to capture their “outdoor” wed-ding display, a captivating montage of celebration, merriment, and happiness. Locally grown tulips and daffodils, with their spring tones, create a serene atmosphere of peace and harmony. Owner Scott Rose was inspired to execute this theme from his part-time job as a wedding DJ.

Big Sky prides themselves on always putting their customers’ needs first. “You don’t have to have a lot of money for us to make your yard look nice,” Rose says. Mowing lawns since the age of 9, Rose prides himself on Big Sky’s accessibility to all income levels – though their Flower Show display may make you think otherwise.

Big Sky would like to give credit to Somerset Nurseries, Quarry Brothers Inc., and DJ Steve Bishop for its exhibit. Services include grass cutting, lawn seeding, general maintenance tree and shrub care, landscape design, fence/rock wall construction, mulching beds, fertilization and snow removal/plowing. 183 Anawan St, Re-hoboth, MA. 774-248-4106, www.bigskylandscape.com

Carnivorous Plant SocietyTake a walk on the wild side. The award-winning Carnivorous Plant Society is celebrating 10 years and over 150 members. A diverse group that loves to share a genuine appreciation for exotic and unusual plants, the society studies carnivorous plants from around the world, including Australia and South America. P.O. Box 606, Saunderstown, RI. 401-741-7825, www.necps.org

Bryce StudioBryce Studio is known for its nostalgic imagery of Rhode Island landscapes and architecture, specializing in large scale oil paint-ings by artist Mike Bryce. The inspiration behind this display comes from a painted garden depicting Providence’s Blackstone Bou-

levard. It will be a celebration of landscape design, using roses, daffodils, tulips and evergreens. Bryce Studio would like to thank Friends of Blackstone Boulevard for helping with this process. 1005 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI. 401-419-0775

Domina’s AgwayDomina’s Agway specializes in lawn and garden, pets, farming, landscaping needs, and most importantly, water features/ponds-instillation and repair. Their display revolves around the theme “Back to Basics,” providing attendees with appealing, attainable ideas for their own yard. The display will feature a night theme with special lighting, ponds, and various water features. Spring plants – like flowering shrubs, watering plants, perennials, annu-als and pacificas – will be used throughout. 1348 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. 401-683-1203, www.dominasagway.com

The Greene SchoolThe Greene School is a charter public high school in West Greenwich. The school is currently operating in its third year and will have its first graduating class this year. Their curriculum is based on nature, the environment, stewardship to the earth, social issues and social causes. The theme of their display will be “Celebration Can Come in Any Form,” inspired by the 20th anniversary of the flower show (teacher and landscape architect Kurt Van Dexter has participated almost every year). Featuring heavy involvement from their students, the Greene School’s garden will use origami flowers to represent blossoming fruit trees, crab apples and flowering scrubs. There will also be a performance space for students to sing, play music and perform. There will also be a participatory flower for Alexandria “Al-lie” Alvarez, a 17-year-old student who recently died in a sledding ac-cident. This display will symbolically celebrate the life she lived. 1740 Stony Lane North Kingstown, RI. 401-397-8600, www.metcenter.org

The Groden CenterThe Groden Center and its greenhouse provide therapeutic edu-cation for children and adults who suffer from autism. A full-ser-vice training facility that employs autistic adults, the greenhouse’s display reflects the diversity of the earth’s habitats. A woodland habitat will include “pink lemonade” blueberries and raspberry bushes, along with other various scrubs. A desert habitat will fea-ture cacti. A rainforest habitat will include orchids, taros, bulbs, daffodils, tulips, bromeliads, anthrium, colocasias and elephant ears. The Groden Center’s garden will also feature a waterfall for attendees to walk under, a scavenger hunt for kids and anima-tronic butterflies. The Groden Center would like to thank Lt. Colo-nel Archambault’s U.S. Army JROTC Blue Wave Battalion at Hope High School in Providence and the students at East Providence High School for their hard work in this project, as well as Aqua Life on Wickenden Street for providing the fish for the pond adjacent to the waterfall. 610 Menton Avenue, Providence, RI. 401-421-1077, www.grodencenter.org

ries This Old House, and the Emmy-nominated series Ask This Old House since 2003. He also serves on the editorial board of This Old House magazine, published by This Old House Ven-tures, Inc. Along with Amy Matthews, Kevin is also the host of This New House, which premiered on the DIY Network in the summer of 2010.

Kevin, along with his four brothers and two sisters, grew up on various job sites led by his father, a civil engineer. Years later he remains an avid home enthusiast. When Kevin, a life-long fan of This Old House, and his wife, Kathleen, became overwhelmed by their long to-do list, they sent an e-mail seek-ing help from the Ask This Old House experts. To their surprise and delight, the House call served as Kevin’s first screen test to serve as the new host (the third host in the history of the pioneer home improvement series).

Kevin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the College of the Holy Cross in 1990 and a Master’s of Business Ad-ministration degree from Boston University in 1999. Most recent-ly Kevin worked for Bank of America as a Senior Vice President in the Commercial Real Estate Group and before that in the Sports Finance Group at Fleet Bank. BRUCE FRAEDRIChVice President of Research, Bartlett Tree Expert CompanyFriday, February 22 at 3pmTopic: Landscape plant management is facing many challenges today. Exotic pests are being introduced at unprec-edented rates, while society is becoming

increasingly intolerant of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Climate change is bringing severe fluctuations in temperature and rainfall as well as an increased incidence of severe storms while the public is becoming more verse to accepting risk associated with trees. Public entities and private property owners are facing aging tree popula-tions in the post-war suburban developments in the Northeast. Bud-gets, both public and private, are being strained in the new economy.About the presenter: Fraedrich’s presentation will explore these issues and discuss key research that provides direction in manag-ing landscapes today and how this research is being incorporated into standards and best management practices to guide quality tree care. Topics will include advancements in information technology, biomechanics that provides a better understanding of tree stability, quantification of the environmental values of trees, and consumer preferences for sustainable products for managing plant health.

Bruce Fraedrich is the Vice President of Research at the F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company and the Director of Bartlett Tree Re-search Laboratories. In this position, Dr. Fraedrich is responsible for directing research, technical support and training functions for the Bartlett Company. His research interests include diseases of land-scape plants, tree risk management and planting and establishment of landscape plants. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Clemson University and a Masters in Forestry from Duke University. Dr. Fraedrich received the L.C. Chadwick Award for Arboricultural Research from the International Society of Arboriculture in 2005. He lives in Lake Wylie, SC with wife Lyn where he is an avid gardener. They have two grown children and one grandchild.

What complements beautiful flowers more than good food? We decorate our tables with floral centerpieces. Creative chefs add edible blooms as accents to exquisitely prepared dishes for flavor as well as visual appeal.

Wine and flowers are even more intertwined. When tast-ing wine, one of the first distinguishing characteristics that we notice is its aroma, called the “bouquet” and described as “floral” or “flowery.” And of course, wine and roses are famous in story and song.

It is with this in mind that we are pleased to present the 2013 edition of the Food and Wine Festival at the Flower Show. During or after your visit through the gardens and dis-plays, we invite you to come upstairs to the fifth floor Ball-room area and discover interesting wines and foods from all over the world.

There is a separate admission to the Food and Wine Festival and no one under 21 may attend.

Take a seat in the RI Kitchen and Bath Theatre Kitchen and watch nationally known chefs, some from your favorite local restaurants, create culinary delights and share their knowl-edge. Before and after, stroll through the Grand Tasting and relax in the Barefoot Lounge.

Enjoy and “Sante!”

Spring Ahead

A Taste of the SeasonGardeners, horticulturists and anyone with a green thumb all look forward each year to the Rhode Island Spring Flower and Garden Show. 2013 marks the show’s 20th anniversa-ry with the theme, “Celebrating 20 Years.” Our show has earned its reputation as “New England’s Most Beautiful Flow-er Show.” Over the past two decades, nearly 600 gardens with ten million flowers – most of which we had to coax to grow in February – have been brought inside the Rhode Is-land Convention Center. To create the gardens, our talented designers used over one million yards of mulch and 750 tons of stone! With seminars and lectures by nationally known gardening experts and the return of the Food and Wine Fes-tival, our Show more than ever provides education, ideas and entertainment for families and value for the dollar. We are pleased to be able to have you celebrate with us this Febru-ary. www.flowershow.com
