HYATT ANDAZ - PAPAGAYO
design architect: DAS Concepts / project lighting designers: Ken Ventry, Levia Lew, Courtney Mark / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
papagayo, costa rica
This resort experience includes direct interaction with the climate due to the many open
air food and beverage outlets and public areas. At night, lighting treatments highlight
the unique architectural and design features of the property which created a dramatic
tonal contrast of the natural materials to the incredible sky. Preset controlled lighting
settings subtly shifts the guest experience, seamlessly transitioning spaces from
day to night. Due to local light pollution regulations in Papagayo, Costa Rica, lighting
treatments were integrated into the architectural features to reduce the source’s visual
presence. Linear LEDs line the entry ramp and the stone wall behind the black body
water feature, guiding guests into the billowing reception canopy. Gently illuminated
from two coves, the canopy’s natural warmth and graceful form offer an inviting
welcome experience. Low profile, surface mounted fixtures tucked into the beams
provide an ambient glow while a cloud of perforated ceramic pendants contributes a
textured luminous sparkle. With extremely strict budget constraints, the entire project
was completed for less than $2.50/square foot for all lighting fixtures and controls.
PARK HYATT
design architect: Gonzalez Architects / project lighting designers: Ken Ventry, Levia Lew / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
At the Park Hyatt in Washington D.C., texture is of paramount importance. Texture softens
the monolithic forms dominating the visual landscape of the main lobby, giving a subtle
nod to Americana arts and crafts. When approached by José González Architects in the
lighting renovation of the subterranean pre-function and meeting room spaces of the Park
Hyatt, Reveal Design Group carefully strove to continue this aesthetic between the existing
and the newly designed spaces. Creating a clean, yet inviting quality of illumination was
crucial both in highlighting the textural richness of the design and in providing airiness
to an underground space. Linear fixtures hidden in coves; integrated into the millwork
of doorway portals; and tucked behind mirrors provided an ambient, indirect source of
illumination. Light combined with the rich variety of materials, results in a triumph of visual
balance, sophistication and a successful extension of the iconic, original lobby design.

HYATT REGENCY - CINCINNATI
design architect: K2M Design / project lighting designers: Levia Lew, Ken Ventry / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
cincinnati, ohio
The renovation design for the Hyatt Regency in Cincinnati was aimed at bringing a
boutique aesthetic to a property whose primary demographic were convention attendees
and sports viewers. The main design challenge was to honor the Client’s desire for a
more sensitively designed convention hotel while keeping within a budget that is typical
for a large scale, commercial property. Designed features had to be simple, yet impactful
enough in the large atrium space to create a sense of arrival and welcome to guests.
Close collaboration with K2M architects in Ohio, allowed Reveal to develop millwork details,
glass feature walls and screens to fully integrate lighting into the architectural elements.
WESTIN TIMES SQUARE
design architect: Jeffrey Beers International / project lighting designers: Ken Ventry, Courtney Mark, Grace Whang / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
Reveal Design Group collaborated with Jeffrey Beers International to renovate the atrium
and meeting rooms at the Westin Times Square. Taking cues from the interior design
of the meeting rooms, which contains objects and literature that highlighted New
York City’s local history, photography and identity, Reveal Design Group illuminated the
shelves as a showcase highlighting each item’s form and content. The interior Atrium
was infused with a new energy and visual dynamism with the dramatic internally
illuminated screen that envelops the central wall serving as the Atrium’s centerpiece.

BOCA BEACH CLUB
design architect: Richmond International / project lighting designer: Ken Ventry / project lighting firm: Focus Lighting, Inc.
A sumptuous exploration of traditional and classical forms, the Boca Beach Club embodies
modern refinement. Lighting treatments within the architecture guide the eye through visual
and physical processions: a dramatically framed ocean view welcomes guests upon entry,
illuminated portals within the main corridors in the lobby leads to a handsome end view of
a color shifting stone wall. A luminous alabaster wall glows with the warmth of a hearth
in the restaurant giving guests a uniquely comfortable and luxurious dining experience.

new york, new york
The re-conceived Royalton Hotel focuses on intimacy with sensuously dark spaces,
luxurious materials and highly textured sculptural elements.Accents glow the beaded
partitions to exhibit their geometric forms. Ceiling lights illuminate the handcrafted
fireplace, while uplights graze the stitched leather wall and metal screen to provide a
complex tactile composition.Recessed fixtures highlight woven sculptural arches from
below, revealing their subtle craftsmanship. With this rebirth the Royalton continues
to set the standard for boutique hospitality and continues its legacy as a cultural icon.
HARLOW
interior architect: Meyer Davis Studio Inc / project lighting designer: Ken Ventry, Levia Lew/ project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
new york, new york
Classic and modern elegance meld in the renovated interior of this chic restaurant.
Classic finishes and fixtures combine with new fixtures and furnishings that abstract
vintage forms. Original era chandeliers sparkle while modern translucent fixtures
atop light box tables provide visual variety and local illumination. Long life xenon strip
illumination within the dining room’s perimeter crown molding emphasizes the plaster
molding details while providing visual contrast between the material transitions at the
walls. Banquette linear LED uplights define the space at a human scale while enveloping
diners in a warm glow. Two systems of linear light behind the original leaded windows
provide cool white illumination to simulate daylight during lunch hours. In the evening the
light transitions into a warm incandescent glow simulating firelight or candlelight.
SERPICO
design architect: designbureaux / project lighting designer: Ken Ventry, Levia Lew / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
philadelphia, pennsylvania
With a minimalist interior design by DesignBureaux, the lighting layout was pared to its
barest essentials while maintaining a sense of elegance and sophistication. A ribbon of
light hidden at the top of the chalkboard perimeter wall highlights the brick texture in
contrast with the smooth black void of the chalkboard. A suspended steel frame hangs
over the entire dining area with low profile MR16 fixtures tucked inside to provide spot
illumination over the tables. Adjustable track heads on side mounted track reaches tables
outside the range of the hanging steel frame. A locally placed decorative lantern adds
intimate illumination, and keeps the black chalkboard from swallowing the banquette
settings into darkness. The expo kitchen is the central display stage of the restaurant so
it was important to ensure a showman quality to the chefs and food preparers behind
the counter. Additional downlights were coordinated into the expansive kitchen hood to
provide spot illumination over the sushi bar seating area. Additional lighting was installed
inside the hood to increase the overall light levels to give the kitchen the feel of a brightly
illuminated stage. Linear LED tapelight mounted below the bar highlights the contrasting
white grout lines against the black tile.
SOBOU - W FRENCH QUARTER
design architect: nemaworkshop / project lighting designer: Ken Ventry, Levia Lew, Courtney Mark / project lighting firm: Reveal Design Group
new orleans, louisiana
Reveal Design Group together with nemaworkshop realized a classy, sassy interpretation
of the saloon in the heart of the French Quarter located within the W-Hotel. Tools of
mixology loaned by the Museum of the American Cocktail displayed with abstracted
symbols of New Orleans’ music history creates an immersive and dazzling environment
celebrating the art of the cocktail. A linear series of infinity boxes displays illuminated
frosted and clear bottles in dizzying luminescent tunnels. Shelves with bottles of varying
translucencies uplit with linear LED strips create a sparkling glass curtain that envelops
diners in a warm glow. A frosted oval table reserved for special tastings glows from
within, transmitting light through stemware with colorful concoctions highlighting each
drink’s artful construction. SoBou is a chic homage to the modern cocktail that is sure to
remain a must see destination for locals and visitors alike.

MAKOTO
Balancing a clean, modern aesthetic with the classic atmosphere at the Bal Harbour
Shops, Makoto is the latest offering from Stephen Starr in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale
area with modern interpretations of classic Japanese flavors by Chef Makoto Okuwa.
Reveal Design Group worked closely with Gilles & Boissier, the interior designers to
create a luminous ambiance to the restaurant. A large wall mural stretching the entire
length of the restaurant is softly framed from top and bottom in an illuminated gradient
achieved with a linear uplight graze behind the banquettes. Superimposed on the mural
wall is a carefully orchestrated series of streaked light creating a dramatic pattern that
crisscrosses the mural’s surface. Behind the sushi bar, a translucent amber glass screen
is illuminated to provide an eye-catching backdrop for the chefs swiftly working their
artful creations for dining patrons. The resulting dining experience at Makoto is as striking
as it is elegant and sleek.

wash up the slate grey tiles providing a subtle glow around the diners. Accents lights
hidden in between suspended ceiling slats highlight the tables below providing localized
illumination and contrast in the dining space. The second floor’s dramatic suspended
