Direction in Level 6
In Level 6 I want to
design and create both garments
and products that focus on the
use of technology within fashion.
I will achieve this through both the
fabric I use, and also constrcution methods.
I have a keen interest in science-fiction
and an eye for detail; by combining
both of these into my
research, I will be on the right step to
producing garments and products that
will fulfill my ambition.
I hope to continue with the brand I
have created during Research Practices.
The brand is titled Spatium, the origins
for the brand came from researching
into the words spatial and maximum.
Through this research I created a brand that
focused on wire-frame modelling produced
on computers; combined with
large scales images of mountains and
the environment that surrounds us.
Design Inspiration
I looked into how wire-frame modelling
could be used in conjunction with
clothing - I wanted to use the wire to
make the garment keep its
maximum shape when it
is being worn.
Designers such as Yohjo Yamamoto
use large proportions and create
drapey silhouette’s, I wanted to
capture the feel of this look,
but in a slightly more
rigid way.
S p a t i u m
The look of the brand is modern,
but I don’t want it to look “futuristic”.
The emphasis is going to be on
detail and quality of fabric.
I deliberately made the logo
slightly oblique, it’s there to
quietly gather interest, rather than
scream in people’s faces.
Product Range
As I started to develop the
brand I began to concentrate on
the idea of a wire-frame being
built into the garment/product.
When the wire-frame is sewn in,
the garment can keep a shape
it wouldn’t normally be
capable of doing so.
Rucksack Prototype
From my design range I created a prototype
rucksack. I constructed it using a waterproof
nylon fabric on the outside, with a thick
cotton as the lining. Adding the metal
frame proved more problematic
than I was expecting.
If I were to put the bag into production,
or follow along these lines in Level 6
then I would enroll myself in some
form of metal work class.
Overall I’m very satisfied with
how the rucksack turned out.
Customer Profile
I want the garments I design to be
made with the intention
of selling to young,
design conscious males.
The price point of the clothes
would be from £80 to £400,
so this would naturally tend toward
young professionals with
disposable income.
The clothes would be sold through
contemporary retailers such as
The Corner, Dover Street Market and LN-CC.
M a r k e t i n g
The marketing for the company would
reflect the overall aesthics behind
the clothing. Simple, yet bold images will provide
a hint to what the company are about.
The packaging will also follow this theme.
The shopping bag that the garments come in
are made using similar materials to
the actual garments, with wire running
throughout the inside of the bag.
Skills Required for Level 6
To achieve my goals in Level 6
I will allot myself more time
in the construction of the garments.
Previously I have mainly put my
energy and resources into the
research and design areas of working.
Fabric is going to be
a major part of my collection,
so I will need the experience of
how to use it properly.
I will also have to enroll in some form of metal
work class, so I have the skills required
to create the metal frames.
