1. Introduction
This essay explores the topic of coaching teenagers and young people and specifically
with life coaching. This is a niche area of coaching and one that takes a specific
understanding of the young person in the immediate cultural as well as an overall
understanding of young people and teenagers in general. This paper discusses some of
the main ways in which coaching can benefit a young person and some appropriate
coaching methods that young people have reacted well to. Research is also presented
on the effectiveness of coaching young people. For simplicities sake, this paper will
name all teenagers and young people as young people or persons and is referring to
any stage from beginning of high school until graduating from college.
2. Some main issues young people face and can benefit from life coaching in
It is important for a coach to understand that there are some matters that mean the world
to most teenagers. Friends are a big one and a young persons happiness, moods, and
decisions is for many based on their friends circle and the way the friendships are
formed. Image is another important one as how they perceive others view them and how
they view themselves has a profound effect on their emotions. To look good is
extremely important to a young person. This topic of image carries over into health
matters, diets, economical state of their family and where they are able to excel or be

perceived as successful and cool. Relationships between males and females are also
a matter that has an effect on their overall emotional and personal well-being.
Young people in every culture and country across the globe have their own unique
issues related to their upbringing and environment but these highlight some general
issues which are important to a wide variety of young people around the world. For
example, in some countries succeeding academically and getting high grades is one of
the main pressures a young person faces, whereas in other countries the pressure is
more career based or job/salary affected. As a coach, knowing generally how teens and
young people are known to think, react, and act and striving to understand the issues
that are important to them is the first step in being able to be a coach that can offer them
the assistance that they may come to you for.
3. How receiving coaching can benefit a young person
There are two main arenas for coaching of young people. One is of the teenager who is
in high school and their world still revolves very much around school, peers, parental
issues etc. And the other arena is of the young person who is either entering into college
or entering the new world of career and job. In both of these arenas, there are various
issues and challenges that a young person can benefit from life coaching, some of which
are covered here.
Young people need help in establishing and recognizing what are their core values and
learning to make decisions based on these. They need assistance in pinpointing their
passion in life and how they can take steps in that direction. Most young people need to

build their confidence so that they are then able to move towards their goals relaxed at
ease and believing in themselves. Young people tend to have a lot of fears and
apprehensions about the future and this can limit them in their dreams and belief in
themselves or others and a coach can help them walk through those fears and face
them. A coach can help a young person to feel more comfortable being themselves and
less susceptible to peer pressure. Young people at times also just need someone to vent
their frustrations and worries to without feeling judged or without someone trying to jump
in and solve the problem for them. Young peoples emotions are usually intense in one
form or another and they experience very high highs and very low lows and a coach can
teach them specific techniques or tools in which to manage these emotions.
Young people tend to be led by emotions in decisions regarding what they want to do or
things that they want to accomplish. For example, a common happening amongst young
people is that they suddenly become inspired and intrigued to pursue a particular thing.
As an example, many young people become inspired to learn an instrument or pursue
music in some way. Some learn that hard work brings results and they are encouraged
by their own successes. For others, its the thrill of performing and they enjoy the glory
and popularity that they see other musicians receive. In either case, the young person
can become disillusioned, discouraged or confused after some time, wondering what
they should do and if they should continue or should they have ever tried in the first
place. A coach can help the young person to frame and understand his/her reasons for
pursuing music. By helping the young person to define the goal that they want to set for
themselves, the coach can then guide the young person in setting realistic expectations
for progress towards the goal.

Studies show that an increasing amount of young people are using medication for
anxiety and depression and while counseling and psychiatric treatments are used and
available for these issues, life coaching is a method that help the young person to take
their eyes off the issues and problems that are causing this emotional imbalance and
instead focus their energies and emotions on both their short term and long term goals,
dreams, visions and the possibilities of the future. Coaching has also been found to be
highly effective with challenging or poorly performing young people.
4. How young people view coaching
Teens like to blame someone else often for the issues, challenges or problems they face
in life and it is important for a coach to be aware of this and assist in guiding the young
person away from the blame game in order to focus energies on more positive steps.
Young people are striving for self-sufficiency. They dont want to appear needy and so
may find it non-appealing or even embarrassing for them to seek out coaching.
However, young people thrive under the guidance of a mentor and need someone that
they can talk about things that they do not feel they can talk with their parents or others
about.
Young people dont like to be lectured, and on first impressions they may feel that a
coach is there to lecture and talk about how they should be doing things better. They
need to become aware of what coaching is and what it is not and then feeling more at
ease that it will not be an environment where they are being instructed or lectured.
Building off the sport coach idea, young people are finding it more appealing to receive
coaching in a similar fashion to help them further their lifes goal and dreams.

5. Striving to understand how young people think links to being a more
effective coach
Knowing generally how teens and young people are known to think, act, and react is the
first step in being able to be a coach that can offer them the assistance that they may be
looking for. It is well worth a coachs time who is interested in being a youth coach to
study and research the wealth of resources available that can give insight and guidance
into the lives of young people and what they face.
That there are individual learning styles is a widely agreed upon theory and this can be a
valuable tool in the hands of an effective coach. Life coach Marie Lindvall Wahlberg, has
been successfully coaching teenagers for many years now and bases her coaching on a
few models like the GROW or PRAISE 2. She also sets a foundation before beginning
coaching of the teenager, by determining their personal learning style through a test.
The teenager then goes onto receiving coaching that is based on their test results and
gives a uniquely tailor made plan for the individual.
Young people dont always react well to too much self-reflection as many times they do
not even understand the emotions that they are going through and so find it hard to even
express it so understanding this is important for a coach so that the coaching does not
get stuck on one type of reflection or one type of method but is an active reflection of
what the young person responds to best.

they are. A coach should strive to find out about what excites the young person, what
they love doing and help them to identify what they are good at and where they are
amazing.
This exercise it itself, that of encouraging the young person, talking about how they are
amazing and hearing from them what they feel they are good at, ways that they have
succeeded or unique gifts that they have is an incredibly powerful tool that a coach can
use to bring the young person on a path of forward progress. Inside their sub-conscious
many young people feel insecure, apprehensive about the future and conscious about
others view them. They desperately need an outside voice encouraging them to never
give up. Reminding them constantly of all that they have achieved and telling them how
proud you are of them for any steps of progress or even efforts of progress.
7. Coaching the parents of young people and teenagers
A common side effect of coaching is that a coach will receive request for coaching from
the parents of the young person, specifically the teenage young person. To be an
effective coach you can consider coaching the parents as well as it can help you in
understanding the environment in which the young person lives, interacts and forms
relationships. It is a very important part of their lives and who they are.
A coach can guide or coach the parent of the young person in trying out certain types of
interaction with their young person and observing what brings the positive results. An
effective tool that can be used with the parents is encouraging them to take the time to
focus on the good points of their teenager. Parents tend to pressure themselves about
their young person and what they feel they should be, so helping and guiding a parent to

relax and enjoy their young person can make a world of difference in their interaction
with them and helps to minimize the intensities that can happen. A coach can also
encourage the parents to not tell their young person what to do and how to do it, but
rather being there to help them find ways of doing it themselves. Being vulnerable and
sharing their own experiences, mistakes and challenges which they faced when young
or how they made decisions regarding education and work etc. can also help a parent to
be more relatable and thus a better communicator. Take time with their young person
its an investment that always pays
8. Conclusion
In summary, teenagers and young people can benefit enormously from life coaching and
career coaching. There are three main ingredients that can help a coach to be
successful in coaching young people and these are; trust, non-judgmental listening,
logical objective self-assessment. By using these ingredients in coaching of young
people you will create an atmosphere that is conducive to them making progress
towards their unique and individual life goals.
