PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT EVENT REFRESHED STRETFORD MASTERPLAN
WELCOME
Theresa Grant Chief Executive, Trafford Council
Context
• The original Stretford Masterplan was agreed in 2014 to
revitalise the Town Centre
• Since then significant progress - including Stretford Public Hall being taken over and run by Friends of Stretford Public Hall Group and investment in public realm
• Many challenges remain, with around a third of shops being empty and the Essoldo remaining unused
• The announcement of a new higher education facility, University Academy ’92 in Stretford, provides an opportunity to increase the pace and level of investment
• Our aim is to ensure the local community benefits fully from this investment and economic growth
TODAY’S FOCUS
Stretford Town Centre
• Retail and Leisure Offer/Stretford Mall
• The Essoldo
• Lacy Street site/ campus accommodation
• Public spaces and A56
Stretford Town Centre
• Attraction of new retail operators with a balance of national chains and independents.
• New restaurants, bars and cafés.
• Reopening of the Essoldo building for community uses.
• High quality student accomodation on the Lacy Street site.
• Development that helps open up access to the Bridgewater Canal.
• More attractive public spaces and improve pedestrian and cycle routes.
Key proposals:
Stretford Town Centre
• Not clear what new town centre facilities will be provided.
• Too much focus on students.
• Proposed Lacy Street development is too tall/dense.
• Could other uses go on Lacy Street with student accommodation
on Talbot Road.
• The A56 remains a major barrier to pedestrians/cyclists
• Mature trees need to be protected.
Feedback so far
• First on the wide range of potential development opportunities in the town centre, what they should offer and how spaces could be best used.
• Second focused on the proposals for student accommodation on the Lacy Street site and how this links to the wider opportunities for the town centre.
Two Discussion Sessions
Format
• The Essoldo building will be a student facility
• The library could be closed • All the green spaces on the A56 will be redeveloped
• We have lots more detail which we’re not sharing with you Much of the detail will come from these sessions, the survey and other ways to feedback. So please tell us what you think and what you want….
