This year’s theme (Some-
where in Time) offers a great opportunity for our speakers
to reflect on the past, the present, and the future. For a day we are all historians,
futurists, and time travelers. I know many of you are
familiar with the term back-casting. Backcasters imagine where they want to be in the future and then map the path
to that future backwards, step-by-step, until they get to the present day. In this way they can understand what
needs to be done; to arrive at the desired point in time and
break free of the assumptions of the present and current
trends and fashions, in order to create something new.
I think what TEDx visitors have in common is that they want the future to be better than the present. We want
to leave the world as a better place. We’d like the future
to be a time of peace, a time of plenty, a time of justice,
a time of creativity, joy, and freedom. If we were back-casters we would describe
that future and map out ways to get there.
This is what TEDxAmster-dam is all about: it’s about
taking the ideas that will lead us into a better future, shar-ing them, and making them happen: ideas worth sharing
and worth doing.
The performers and speak-ers planned for today have all imagined their version
of the future. They all work towards achieving it. They do it with invention, innovation, and inspiration. Time is their teacher, and they use the past,
present, and future to create something new and
exciting.
Today is a day to be remind-ed not of what divides us, but what brings us together. We
are all united in time.ß
Dear TEDxAmsterdam Community,
HERE WE ARE AGAIN SOMEWHERE IN TIME
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.TOGETHER FOR THE
SIXTH ANNUAL TEDxAMSTERDAM EVENT.

Specially for TEDxAm-sterdam The Ampersand Assembly are portraying
‘The Ministry of Time’. The ministry comes together to
collect the ideas, dreams and wishes of today, in order to
investigate the puzzles of our time. To transgress these ideas
into the future the Ministry has brought a time capsule to conserve these solutions for the next generation to
come. Therefore we will ask each, and every one of you, to bring a personal object
that symbolizes our current moment in time.
At 7:45 PM, November 28th 2014, the time capsule will of-ficially be sealed with a grand ceremony and safely stored
until 2020.
Guests can experience TEDxAmsterdam off stage as well. Take a voyage to the Foyers!
TIME TO SHARE AND TO CONNECT
It all started with a quote from CS
Lewis: “The future is something which everyone reaches at
the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.”
This was the starting point for creative
agency We Are Pi to construct this year’s campaign ‘United in time’. Barney Hob-son from We Are Pi: “One pair of hands tells the time. Many hands make history. The Human Clock
THE HUMAN CLOCKis a challenge to unite all of us in seconds,
minutes, hours and days, together.”
OUR IDEA WORTH SPREADING
The idea behind the Human Clock is simple: no matter what your language, your race, no matter where you’re from or what you do, we all have one thing in common – the time we share. The world’s fi rst Human Clock
aims to shine a light on human div ersity by bringing as many faces as possible together
as part of an ever-evolving digital clock.
A CHALLENGE TO MANKIND
In co-ordination with crew, guests and followers of TEDxAmsterdam, the global
TEDx network and beyond, the Human Clock is an iterative open source exper-iment that builds
as each new face is added. The goal is to reach 24 hours worth of one-second faces. The Human Clock is a challenge to man-
kind to celebrate our differences - United
in Time.
One second is one click away. Share
your clock face with the world on Thehu-
manClock.org.

TEDxAmsterdam 2014 on screens at Schiphol Airport
and at Amsterdam Zuid Station.
SPACES
If you are a member of spac-es you can watch our pro-
gram through a live stream at Spaces.
LIVE REPORTING On November 28th our website looks completely differ-ent. Watch the live streams and follow
live reporting from in and around the Stads-schouwburg. A team of volunteers reports
on all activities on stage, the Leidseplein
and in Vondel CS. This online platform
was made with TagtheLove.com,
built by Mobypic-ture. Watch a multi-tude of live streams,
news feeds, and video reports from our
partner Feller Media.
LIVE STREAMS We bring a record num-ber of ways to watch
TEDxAmsterdam. There’s not only a regular live stream,
we also offer a subtitled live stream:
convenient for a noisy environment. And for the first time, in a third live stream cer-
tified sign language translators will translate all talks into international sign for the deaf audience Finally, you can watch the fourth
live stream in 3D if you own an Oculus Rift or a Google’s cardboard virtual reality kit.
VIDEO WITH A TWITTER FEED TEDxAmsterdam has a technological exclu-sive. We are teaming up with SAAM, a new media innovation by Dagan Cohen. SAAM is an application bringing video and Twit-
ter together on one screen. While watching a talk online, you can follow the Twitter
discussion. Missed it? Every video posted on TEDxAmsterdam will be accompanied by its
Twitter archive.
MOOD SENSING This year we experiment with mood
sensing. The Stadsschouwburg is equipped with cameras facing the audience. Footage from our audience will be run through face recognition software, analyzed and catego-rized by emotion. Talks will be graded by the mood they set, and we will report on these findings later. It’s organized by our partner Dell in collaboration with Hand-
made UX and Sightcorp.
DOWNLOAD OUR APP Our main
partners KPN and ING joined forces to make this year’s TEDxAmsterdam
app, which contains the program, speaker
info and all pitch-es from our award
nominees. Keen to watch a specific talk
in the stream? Set the alarm in the app. Download it for free in the iTunes Store or Google Play. Search
for TEDx-Amsterdam.
