Task 1
Observe an English Teacher in your school during one of her English
classes.
I got permission from Cik Izzati bt Jakarni, one of the English teachers in school
to observe the teaching and learning process in her class. The record of the
observation is as below :-
1. Information about the lesson :-
Date : 5 July 2011
Time : 10.00 – 11.00
Class : 4 Bestari
Number of pupils : 30 pupils
Lesson duration : 1 hour
Topic / Theme : Moving Around / Transport
Lesson objectives : 1.2.2 Listen to and repeat correctly
phrases and expressions.
3.4.1 Read aloud words and phrases,
pronouncing them correctly.
4.6.1 Spell words that are given to be
memorized.
2. .Describe how the teacher sequenced her lesson
The lesson started at 11 am with the topic ‘Plants’. Teacher started the
lesson with induction set. She warmed up the lesson with asking how
they come to school . Students’ responses and teacher list down the
transport that used on the board. Then, teacher showed a list of
transport that used by students all over Malaysia to go to school.
Students are asked to memorize as many name of transport as they
can in a minute then they need to write them out .Students who get
the highest score will get rewards.
Refer to textbook, teacher guided the students to name different types
of transport. They said aloud each word clearly with correct
pronunciation after teacher. Students were encouraged to talk about
the transports.
Later, teacher distributed picture of different transport and word cards
with the name of these transport to students randomly. They were
asked to find and match the pictures and correct words among them.
Each pair of students spelled the word in front of the class before
pasted them on the board.
After the matching activity, they were asked to say aloud and spell the
name of transport s according to the word cards on the board.
Teacher carried out spelling bee exercise before the spelling test .
As closure, teacher checked the answers for the spelling test with
students. They exchange their exercise book with their peers. They
marked the answers together with teacher. Lastly they were asked to
complete the worksheets given.
3. .Describe one English learning activity that you saw during the lesson.
During the lesson, English teacher focused on drilling activity. She
drilled students to spell words. Firstly students matched word cards to
the pictures that given to them on the board. Then, they said and
spelled words aloud. Spelling bee exercise was given to them before
the spelling test. Drilling activity is an effective method because
repetition can help students to memorize well. As the result, 28
students can spell all words correctly in the spelling test. It shows that
drilling activity really effective.
4. Compare the techniques used by the teacher through out the lesson to
some of the ELT methodologies you have exposed to:
Grammar translation method - Most of the pupils in 4B not so good
in English. Sometime teacher used Bahasa Melayu, the students’
mother tongue to give instruction before activities. Translation is
needed although the target language is English . Students could
understand well when bilingual was used for giving instructions.
The Audiolingual method : Repetition or drilling was used by
teacher to help students practice spelling. Drilling is one of the
effective method to help students learnt English as second
language.
Total Physical Response method – Game and group activity are
planned for students because learning should be fun and less
stress as possible.
Suggestopedia method – teacher provide a relaxed and
comfortable learning environment in classroom with games or
interactive acticities, various teaching aids and students sit in group
that encourage discussion and cooperation.
5. How do the classroom skills and management techniques of English
teachers compare with the Mathematics teachers ?
A. Seat Arrangement
I had interviewed with several English and Mathematics teachers
regarding their view of point about seat arrangement in the classroom.
They agreed that there are many ways of seat arranging in a classroom.
The best arrangement is the one that fits the teacher’s style, fits the
classroom dimensions, and feels comfortable to the students.
According to one of English teachers in my school, seat arrangements in
her classroom changed based on the activities that carried out during
lesson. The most common seat arrangements that used are :-
Desks in rows, facing forward- teacher use whiteboard during
teaching or pupils need to work independently.
Desks in groups – During group activity and discussion.
U shape arrangement – During activities such as story-telling, role
play or other presentation by pupils.
Pupils sitting in rows and groups also are the favourite seat arrangements
by Mathematics teachers. Sitting in rows is suitable during the lesson
especially when the theory or theorem is been explained and drilling
activity is carried on. But when group activities like making 3D shape
model or other mathematics project , pupils sitting in group is the ideal
way.
B. Classroom Organization
Classroom organization also being discuss during the interview. Based on
information gathered, I think the classroom organization for both English
and Mathematics teacher were almost the same .
Both teachers keep student’s worksheets, exercise books and other
stationery in the cabinet provided in the classroom. Students always know
where they can find the materials when is needed. They make sure the
hand-outs are ready before the lesson start.
Neat and organized lesson plan ensure the teaching and learning
activities goes on smoothly. Well prepared with teaching aids and
worksheets if necessary.
Both teachers have made their own rules to follow by pupils besides the
school rules. Rewards will give to pupils that behave well and do well in
the classroom. Pupil who doesn’t finish their works or disturbing the
procedure of the lesson will be punished.
Learning corner can be create for pupils who need enrichment and drilling
of specific concepts, and for use as a reward for cooperative behavior in
the classroom.
C. Teacher and learner roles
On 3rd August 2011, I had an apportunity to observe one of the classes in
Year 3, I needed to find out the teacher and learners role in the process of
teaching and learning activities.
During the lesson, I noticed that, Puan Azizah used students-centered
strategy and material-centered strategy as her teaching strategies in her
lesson about the topic “Peter Pan”.
In introduction set, teacher attracted students’ attention with showing them
some famous story books as Snow White With Seven Dwarfs , Ali Baba
And Forty Thieves, Alladin And The Magic Lamp and Sleeping Beauty.
Students chose for their favourite book and gave reasons.
Teacher used CD-Rom to play the story about “Peter Pan”. The sound
effect, the flow of story and the colourful scene able to attract students
attention to the story. In this stage, teacher was a planner and organizer.
She prefered to use ICT to present the story. The students were the
listeners or audiences.
After story-telling, teacher asked some questions that related to the story.
Teacher was the role model as she asked for answers in a polite manner.
She acted as an example for students to be a polite person.
Students-centered strategy was used when they were divided in group to
make a record of what they read just now. They discussed and shared
ideas to complete the record as shown in the textbook. A representative of
each group would present their work s in front of the class. At this section,
teacher’s role was as a facilitator who observes and helps students during
the discussion. On the other hand, students’ role were as performers and
presenters.
Compare to English teachers, Mathematics teachers play similar roles in
teaching students. The different s between them are English teachers
deliver listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English language. While
Mathematics teachers deliver mathematical concepts,, increase students
mathematical understanding to solve problems and help students to make
connections between mathematics, other subjects in school and the world
outside the school.
As a conclusion, all teachers perform as a designer and implementor of
instruction. Teachers at every level prepare plans that aid delivery of their
daily lessons. They need to make wise decisions about the strategies and
methods they will employ to help students move systematically toward
learner goals.
D. Sequence Lesson
I had observed Cik Izzati for the second time in her class. The main
objective for this observation is to know the sequencing of lesson in
English language class. She planned her lesson as below:-
Set Induction : Prepare students’ mind set with activities that related to
their previous knowledge about the topic or give introduction to
lesson .She started the lesson with getting students to talk about the
states and capital cities of Malaysia. Then they played the game “ I Spy “
to guess the name of states and cities in Malaysia.
Presentation : Using suitable and effective technique and teaching aids to
deliver skills in English. Refer to textbook, she guided them to read and
understand the text about Malaysia. She also used the map and
information from internet to help students to know Malaysia. Discussion
through asking questions helped students foe better under standing.
Practice / Production : In pair, students read the text again, paying
attention to their pronunciation. Students answered the questions in to
their exercise books. Besides that, students were asked to discuss and
plan for their group project.
Closure :As closure, teacher ended the lesson by singing a song entitled “
Keranamu, Malaysia” and stressed on the spirit of patriotism.
In my opinion, the sequencing of lesson in both English language and
Mathematics are the same. Teachers try to create effective learning
environment with various activities such as group activities, language
games, projects, worksheets, story-telling and etc to achieve learning
goals.
Task 2
Match textbook activities with the English
Language Curriculum Specifications
1.Collect the Curriculum Specifications for any
Primary Year 4
2.Photocopy 1 – 2 pages from a textbook of
the same year as the curriculum
Specifications you collected in No.1
3.Match the activities specified on the
textbook pages to the relevant Curriculum
Specifications.
Task 3
Collect and analyse samples of Remedial
and Enrichment materials.
1.Collect 2 samples each of Remedial and
Enrichment materials for the teaching of
English.
2. Choose 1 remedial and 1 enrichment activity and explain how these
materials were used for the remedial / enrichment activities.
Enrichment Activity 1:
Activities : to label the objects in the living room and to locate the objects
by constructing five sentences using prepositions .
This activity is suitable for students in lower primary .
First, students will have previous knowledge about name of objects
in the living room and the uses of various prepositions.
After the learning activity, this worksheet will be given as
enrichment activity. They need to name the objects given and
construct simple sentences.
As self learning material in self learning centre, students complete
the task individually and check with the answers provided.
Remedial Activity 1 :
Firstly, teacher should guide the students to recognize and name
the objects in living room using teaching aids.
Before the worksheet is given, teacher will guides the students to
recognize the pictures and say aloud the words provided.
Students also need to revise the uses of prepositions.
After that, students will complete the worksheet with the guidance
by the teacher .
Task 4
Identify English Corner / English Noticeboard in your school and the roles they
play.
1. Take photograph of English corner and or noticeboard in your school
2. Discuss whether and how they play a role in enhancing the learning of
English among the pupils in your school.
All the classes in my school have an English corner. An English corner
basically consists of a space in the corner of the classroom with the
appropriate materials for pupils to read and self learning. Besid that,
there is a English Learning Corner called “ Stop and Share ” in my school
compound.
The English Laerning Corner is situated at the back of the school hall.
This large opened area can fitted in with a lot of materials to help students
to improve their vocabulary in English. The display corner consists
different objects around us. These objects are arranged and displayed
neatly at the corner so they are clearly visible. Pupils can easily get extra
information when they are free, especially during recess every day. Here,
they can learn a lot of vocabulary or practice and review vocabulary they
learnt in the classroom .The materials will be change every two months.
English story books are kept in a cabinet near the corner. Librarians on
duty will place the books on a table for pupils to read during recess time. It
allows them to look through books of their own choice and read. They can
improve their foreign language when they read. Pupils also can improve
their knowledge in grammar such as adverb, adjective due to information
that add in the corner.
I think this English corner acheive the objective to enhance learning
among pupils in my school. It create a great environment b and offer an
opportunity, after class, for students to practice their English. Attractive
and colourful mural and decoration at the corner will encourrge come to
there.
