This is the design portfolio of Andrew
Cunningham. The portfolio is organized by
project. These projects are in chronological
order. The time frame for the projects range
from second year through fourth year at
Ball State University. Projects are included from student work as
well as from work done while as an intern.
PATOKA LAKE RECREATIONAL PLAN
Patoka Lake is located south of French Lick,
Indiana. the project takes
a site that is currently
undeveloped. the design’s goal is to preserve the
beauty of the natural site while granting access
to the public to enjoy the
natural beauty. The project also utilizes
recreational and commercial
opportunities.
DAMMED
UNION CITY GREENWAYUnion City straddles the
border of Indiana and Ohio. This project utilizes a greenway system that
runs right through the heart of downtown. As
the trail crosses the border the state to state
connection is celebrated.
The Integrating Habitats project takes advantage of an infi ll opportunity in a traditional
single unit neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. The design goal is to increase density while
preserving the diverse habitat. The design uses green technology to create linkages both within
and outside the site, and to create habitat.
INTEGRATING HABITAT
INDIANA GREENLINEThe Indiana Greenline is a commuter rail
that would run through many communities stretching from Muncie, Indiana to
Indianapolis, Indiana. This project focuses on the community of Lawrence, specifi cally
the rail line depot and the development around it. This design communicates a rich
and diverse community centered around transportation oriented development.
ROCK AND WATER GARDEN The rock and water garden is an
instructional garden in a theoretical botanical garden. The primary focus
is using Indiana’s rock resources as well as native plants to create a
diverse and exciting yet peaceful environment. The paths take the
visitor on a linear journey with many experiences in a relatively small area.
AMBERSON MANSIONThe Amberson Mansion design
is based on a site in Muncie, Indiana. The project criteria was to design the planting plan based on what might
have been designed in the early 1900s. The design
implements formal plantings and arrangements near the base of the house and becoming more organic and natural as
one moves away from the house. The design also features
a refl ecting pool and natural pond.
SYCAMORE HILLSThis nine hole golf course is designed on the site of McCulloch Park in Muncie, Indiana. The course design utilizes the existing
vegetation as well as the existing topography to create a diverse, exciting and unique nine hole golf course. The southern
portion of the course runs along the White River. Beautiful Sycamores that exist in the park are taken advantage of and
used as specimen trees, from this comes the name Sycamore Hills.
MILITARY PARK Military Park is located just north of the Indiana State Museum in the Canal District of Indianapolis, Indiana. The
design creates a diverse park for many users. It pays homage to the military with an interactive fountain
symbolizing a 21 gun salute. Keeping the context in mind the park features
outdoor classrooms shown in the plan detail. This project was completed by
a fi ve member team. I acted as the project manager.
master plan designed in collaberation with the team and rendered by a separate team member. Detail plan was designed and rendered by myself.
WASHINGTON STREETSCAPEThis full streetscape renovation from utilities to aesthetics is designed for Washington
St., downtown Goshen, Indiana. This was done while working for Wightman Petrie Inc. The design includes safer parking through the use of angled parking and bump outs. The pedestrian is specifi cally adhered to through crosswalks, seat walls around planting beds, bicycle racks and intricate paving patterns. I had the opportunity to have input on some of the last phases of the design as well as rendering the plan.
U.S. 33 BEAUTIFICATIONThe section of U.S. 33 that connects Goshen
with Elkhart in the state of Indiana has become overcome with sprawl stretching from both
cities. The city of Goshen has chosen to recognize this section of the highway as a
gateway into the heart of their city. Through a pedestrian way, unifi ed lighting, signage, plantings and even sculptural pieces, steps
are being taken to reclaim the gateway and connection between these cities. This project is designed by Wightman Petrie Inc. I had the opportinuty to have input on the design and render the detail plans and the perspectives.
CITY CENTER PARK City Center Park is located in Elkhart, Indiana. To the
east of the site is the St. Joseph River and to the
west is the civic plaza. This design takes the parking
once located on the site and re-organizes the parking around the site. The park is designed to
be a passive space that would display community
artwork, provide gatheirng space, and provide
space for recreation. The city of Elkhart hosts a jazz
festival every summer that is very popular.
This site implements an ampitheater that fi ts into
the existing topography to be utilized during this time
as well as for additional performances. This project
was designed at Wightman Petrie Inc.
