Rube Goldberg Machine A comically involved
complicated invention, laboriously contrived to perform a simple operation (Webster’s New World Dictionary)

Objective of TSET Project Challenge students to make a complex
machine to perform a simple task Challenge students to use creativity,
innovation & knowledge learned Challenge students to create well thought out
projects they could feel proud of & present to fellow classmates on Wednesday 3/5/14
Demonstrate project at the GVMS Science Fair on Thursday 3/6/14 for 7th Graders (optional)
Enter TSET Project in the Dixon May Fair (optional)

Specifications of TSET ProjectCan only have one energy input to start
your project (after which you cannot touch again)
Must be mostly homemade (some store-bought parts are allowed but discouraged). Neatness counts!
Must make at least 4 completely different energy transformations, with one energy input to start it. The first motion starting process does not count as the first energy transformation.
Mrs. Lee's TSET Project 2014 11
Specifications of TSET Project (continued) Must do some simple task in a complicated
way (use “Google” & get ideas from Rube Goldberg Internet links). Ex: put a penny in a box, turn on a light bulb, make a noise, move something. Be Creative!
Project must fit in an area 40 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm (length, width, height 40 centimeters or less) (also equal to 16 x 16 x 16 inches. Talk to the teacher if you have questions.
Project must be SAFE! No explosives, flammables or sharp flying objects. Prior approval required for anything even remotely dangerous.

Specifications of TSET Project (continued)
Can work alone or with one other partner (2 maximum per group) in the same Science Period but must share equal speaking parts & effort. If working in pairs, get approval from teacher. Work with a partner you have not worked with prior.
Can employ one or more “Simple Machines” Can use a pet like a hamster or goldfish with
PRIOR approval from parents or guardian.

Specifications of TSET Project (continued)
Draft Project is due Thursday 2/13/14. Use form provided to include detailed picture/drawing of your project. It will be collected at this time to check your progress but will not be returned to you, so make a copy for yourself. Number each energy transformation clearly on your diagram. Then, complete the questions below the diagram (on the form) by writing what task is performed at each energy transformation, what simple machine is used, & what Newton’s Law is applied. Be sure that the final step labeled is the final task your TSET performs. Website below shows a good example of lists of transformations by creator: http://mousetrapcontraptions.com/cool-machines-3.html.
You will still need to create another drawing as part of your final project’s “Procedure” part of your lab write up due Wednesday 3/5/14.

Specification of TSET Project(continued)
Final Project is due Wednesday 3/5/14 which includes 1) Built visual project, 2) Lab write up using Lab Template, 3) Final Procedure Form (which shows your drawing of your TSET project, & 4) signed form by parent/guardian.
Your lab write up should include: a) Proper heading, b) Title, c) Statement of the Problem, d) Hypothesis, e) Materials, f) Procedures (Final Procedures Form with drawing attached here), g) Data/Results, & h) Conclusion.
It’s OK if you decide to change your final drawing entirely after you discover building your draft didn’t work.
You should answer the following questions in your Conclusion & be specific: a) Did your project work? b) What design improvement(s) did you make? c) What did you learn from your project? d) What did you like about your project?
Neatness is important! Stay within the parameters.
Mrs. Lee's TSET Project 2014 15
Specifications of TSET Project (continued) Be ready to present & demonstrate your project to
the class with the usual “Good Presentation Skills” (see my website for guidelines)
You can turn in your project the morning of Wednesday 3/5/14 before school begins at designated areas in my classroom
Project Form must be signed by Parents/Guardian & turned in by Wed 3/5/14
Project must be removed by specified date or it will affect your grade.
ENJOY!!
