OnMay2nd,2012P2PhostedadinnerattheIntercontinentalHotelinAddisAbabaforroughly30gueststodiscusshowthediasporaanditsrelatednetworkcouldsupporttheimportantworkoftheFederalMinistryofHealth(FMoH)inachievingitsgoalsrelatedtotheNewInnovativeMedicalEducationInitiative(NIMEI)andtheestablishmentof13newmedicalschoolsacrossthecountry.Underthisambitiousfederalinitiative,thebasicandresearchscienceshavebeenidentifiedasanareaofgreatneedatthisinitialstage.AmongsttheEthiopianglobaldiasporathereisavastpoolofscientists,physicians,engineers,andotherprofessionalswhohaveavastwealthofexperience,knowledge,andresourcesbetweenthem.Harnessingthishumancapitalandchannelingitinsupportofthenewmedicalcolleges(aswellasexistingones)holdsgreatpotentialtobettereducate,train,andpreparethenextgenerationofphysiciansandprofessionals.Thetimingwasfortuitoustohostadinnerbetweenthevariousrepresentativesofdomesticandinternationalinstitutionsandvisitingdiasporaprofessionals,allofwhomconvergedinAddisduringthesameperiod.Thisgatheringprovidedanopportunityforinterestedstakeholderstodiscussthecurrentstateofaffairs,includingupdatesontheneeds,opportunities,andcurrentfacilities&infrastructure.P2Piscurrentlycoordinatingmanyactivitiesinsupportoftheseimportantendeavors,andthesupportandinvolvementofvolunteerphysiciansandhealth/medicalprofessionalsishighlyencouraged.

P2PworkstomobilizetheglobalEthiopiandiasporatoplayanactiveroleinmitigatingtheimpactofbraindrainandtoigniteapassionforrealizingoursharedresponsibilitytogiveback.Wearecurrentlyworkingtodevelopourdatabaseandarereachingouttomembersofthediasporaand"friendsofEthiopia"whomaybeinterestedingettinginvolved.Atpresent,weareworkingwiththeFederalMinistryofHealthandWorldBankonaprojecttosupportthenationalhealthstrategyand13newmedicalcolleges.Giventhemagnitudeoftheseundertakings,weneedasmanyphysicians,experts,andprofessionalsaspossibletogetinvolvedandhelpsupportEthiopia'squicklygrowinghealthsystem.Wesincerelyhopeyouwilljoinusandhelptobuildabetter,healthierfutureforthepeopleofEthiopia!
