World Cup arrives
Andrew Board and Jacob Chandler
The Cricket World Cup has arrived in Nelson and locals are embracing it whole-heartedly.The first ever ICC Cricket World Cup game to be played in Nelson went off without a hitch yesterday at Saxton Oval.A capacity crowd got right in the spirit with plenty of Irish and West Indies sup-port seen on the embankment.Nelson Cricket Association chairman,
Dave Leonard, says it was a perfect day for the big game. “It’s pretty amazing. The ground looks unbelievable and I’m sure it looked great on TV, which is good for Nel-son.”Dave says he was playing first class cricket for Central Districts when the 1992 world Cup was held in New Zealand and Aus-tralia and the thought that it would come to Nelson one day was “quite unbelievable”.“It goes to show all the hard work from so many people. People at the councils, with
Nelson Cricket and other organisations, and I hope there’s a lot of people feeling pretty proud today of the input they’ve had in getting these games here.”The world cup action started on Trafalgar St on Saturday. The main street’s paved area was packed with cricket fans as they celebrated the beginning of the world cup street-festival style. The fanzone featured a giant screen at the bottom of the church steps where people could sit and watch the Blackcaps take
on Sri Lanka in a game beamed live from Christchurch.Nelson cricket fan Andy Kenton says he had been leaning up against various lamp posts watching the game for most of the afternoon.“I got here right around when New Zealand started to collapse a little, they dropped a couple of wickets as soon as I grabbed my first beer.”

Cricket World Cup draws big crowdsOn Sunday, Trafalgar Park hosted a Guinness world record attempt for the most people standing on one leg.The record, held by Tesco in the UK, is 2276 people, but unfortu-nately only 253 people turned up to the Nelson event.World Cup volunteer Rose Rowe has a theory as to why the num-
bers were not as high as expected.“I think the poor turnout is due to the fact there were so many other events on this weekend,” she says.Standing on one leg, or “doing the Nelson”, is a tradition during cricket to mitigate a score of 111 until the score moves on. “111” is thought to refer to lord Nelson’s three lost appendages. His arm, his eye and his unknown mythi-cal third.
Saxton Oval will play host to two more world cup games over the next few weeks. The first of which is Zimbabwe verses the United Arab Emirates this Thursday, February 19. The final Nelson game will be played between Bangladesh and Scotland on March 5. For tickets to each of the games call 0508 292 2015 or visit www.cricketworld cup.com/tickets

A group of kids at Birchwood School have been getting a kick start to the day thanks to generous support from Count-down Stoke, Fonterra, Sanitar-ium, and a dedicated band of parent helpers.Last year, the school identi-fied a number of children who were missing out on breakfasts in the mornings and decided to do something about it. So one of the school’s support workers, Janice Johnson, got a team of parents together to start a Kickstart Breakfast pro-gramme at the beginning of the second term last year. However, Janice says that feed-ing children in the morning is just one of the reasons why the breakfast club is good news for the school. “We knew we had a need but it was for lots of dif-ferent reasons. We have chil-dren with parents who start work before eight and need somewhere to go, and some who are having trouble mak-ing the transition from home to school.“Of course, there are children who need a breakfast, but the benefits are much broader. It’s social as well as nutritional.”Janice says she has noticed a
big improvement in the be-haviour and academic perfor-mance of many of the children attending the breakfasts. The children have more energy and are “a lot more settled and ready to learn”.The breakfasts are held at school five days a week start-ing at 8am and are regularly at-tended by “at least 20 children.” The programme is supported by Sanitarium which supplies free Weet-Bix, Fonterra which provides the milk and the “fab-ulous” people at Stoke Count-down who help out with fruit, spreads and margarine. The school also received a grant from the Lord Snowdon Trust to buy a freezer to store the bread. Parent helpers are also
a key part of the programme with about three parents ros-tered on every morning to help prepare and serve the break-fasts. “I really like helping out,” parent Anna Fitzgerald says. “It’s all about being part of the community. The kids like the breakfasts but they also like the social side of it as well - it’s a great scheme.”Another parent volunteer, Kim Richards, says the kids are also encouraged to help out in the kitchen, which develops their sense of responsibility. She says good behaviour and manners at the breakfast table were re-warded every morning when they presented a Kickstart Su-perstar Award to one of the children.

A fine day, good marketing and “getting the recipe right” com-bined to make Sunday’s Bright-water Wine and Food Festival a success, with a big crowd enjoying the best of the region’s wine, beer, food and music. The Rotary Club of Richmond’s fundraising event at Middle-Earth Vineyard made a successful return to the social calendar last year, when about 3500 people attended after it had been put on hold in 2013. It was even better this year with over 4000 people enjoying the festivities and raising “at least $30,000” for the community.“We’ve got over 4000 people, which is well past the 3500 we had last year,” Rotary’s Pete Glue says. “We’d pre-sold 1300 tickets, which was up on the 850 we pre-sold last year, so we thought if we had a good day we’d get a good crowd.“We didn’t want any rain but we didn’t want it to be 28 degrees ei-ther, so we were lucky it was just
right. We also got our marketing right and the recipe right.“We haven’t had time to work out how much the festival made but it would more than the $29,800 we made last year - it would be at least $30,000.”Pete says the all the wineries, brew-eries and food stalls were busy, as were the waterboys and girls from Knapps Lawyers who were dis-pensing cool drinking water. It was also a big day out for the es-timated 50 volunteers from sports clubs, fire brigades, St John and community groups, who helped Rotary run the festival smoothly.Pete says the proceeds from the festival will be donated to all of those volunteer groups as well as to the Nelson Marlborough Res-cue Helicopter. “Our volunteers did a great job and we’ll be helping the people who helped us.”

Omega-3 made easy Nordic Naturals ‘Children’s DHA’ is an easy and great tasting way to ensure your children receive their adequate intake of the important omega-3 fatty acid DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). This omega-3 is also found in some foods (especially oily fish), however it can be difficult to get enough through diet alone. DHA has many important functions in the developing body, most notably for optimum brain and eye health. Personally, I recommend Nordic Naturals ‘Children’s DHA’ as a premium quality source of DHA. If you have any questions, please feel free to come into Hardy’s Richmond to find out more. Phone or email [email protected] and we will deliver to your door.

After previously both rowing and wind surfing between Marahau and Tahunanui, Mark Rayner decided to take up a new challenge and paddle board it.He set a personal target to complete the record crossing in one day, leaving from Marahau at 6.30am on Friday and arriving at Tahunanui at 7.30pm.“The morning was calm. I needed incoming tides to take me into Mapua and around the back of Rabbit Island,” he says. After a half hour stop in Mapua for a beer as he waited for the tides to turn, he continued on his “pace yourself marathon”.He says the key to pulling it off was timing the weather and the tides.“It spat me out the other end towards Tahuna.”Mark kept the trip on the “down-low” and there was no crowd
to greet him when he made it to Tahunanui Beach, just Daryl Way from Abel Tasman Stand Up Paddleboard, who had loaned him a board for the trip.“I told him to remind me never to do that again,” Mark says.Daryl says Mark was “sweet as” but was quite happy when he got back to Tahuna. “We went and had a pizza and a cider.”Mark took a day off to recover before returning to his job at Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures.

The Nelson Motor Show has exceeded the ex-pectations of organiser Steve Steele with a record number of people enjoying the three day event. The show began with a “Black Friday Cruz” around Nelson and Richmond, and ended with a prize giving and raffle draw on Sunday. Over the three days of the show, three convertible cars were raffled off to new owners, with a BMW making its way to Clyde, a Mustang heading off to Christchurch and a Ford Capri going to Rich-mond man, Al Bates. The highlight of the week-end also saw a night of entertainment thanks to Urzila Carlson, at which an airbrushed portrait of the show’s original special guest, Ewen Gil-mour, was auctioned off for $1600. Amongst those with cars on display at the motor show was Nelson man Tim Kelly with his 1954
Desoto Diplomat that he bought off a friend’s flatmate. “I went round to a friend’s house and his flatmate had it in the shed, I asked him if he wanted to sell it because I’d be keen on it, but he said he loved it too much to sell it. Then a couple of years later I ran into him and he asked me if I wanted to buy it, so I did and I just did it up from there.” Organiser Steve Steele confirmed that the show was definitely bigger than ever before, thanks to the success of last year and the fact people were out and about due to other events on over the weekend. The top two awards for People’s Choice and Best in Show both went to locals, with Craig Adams from Motueka taking out People’s Choice with his 1973 Dodge Challenger and Richmond man Grant Kerr winning best in show with his 1963 Holden EJ Ute.

Bra’s for Vanuatu – Tuesday, February 10: Belinda Roselli has had a fantastic response from the community after her story in the Nelson Weekly, calling for donations of bra’s and linen that would be taken back to Vanuatu. Wedged between the body corporate blocks and extravagant residences of Wakefield Quay sit three weathered homes, soon to be demolished to make way for modern town houses that overlook the cut. Some local property investors, who wish not to be named, purchased 357 Wakefield Quay with the intention of rebuilding on the land for themselves. But with 355 and 353 also on the market they bought up in an attempt to “safeguard their sun, views and privacy”.Demolition on the current houses is expected to start in around two months time, with building starting soon after. Both properties will be sold on different titles. The investors are still waiting on pricing but say they expect the properties will sell for around 1.5 million

For nine years Natalie Davies has performed for Nelsonians, now she’s hoping they’ll return the favour and help her make it to the West End and Broadway.Natalie graduated from Nelson Col-lege for Girls in 2013 and has per-formed in various show and produc-tions over the years, including Next to Normal at the Theatre Royal last year. Her dream is to make it as a professional actor and is now apply-ing to drama schools in her native England. If she is accepted, Natalie faces an-nual fees of 13,000 pounds for three years, so she’s been working hard to raise as much money as she can.Last year she worked two jobs and saved more than $17,000. She's hop-ing to add to that this year before she jets off in September, and to help her out she’s calling on the people of Nel-son to come along and watch a fund-raising show at the Theatre Royal this Saturday night.“People suggested Kickstarter or crowdfunding sites but I wanted to show people that I’d done the hard yards before I thought about that, be-cause I hate asking for money.
“Then Hugh [Neill] approached me about a fundraising show, and with all my talented friends that I’ve per-formed with over the years I knew we could put together a really, really good programme.”Hugh says the show will be the “crème de la crème” of Nelson young talent and, if the show is a sell-out, it will raise another $5000 for Natalie. The show will include dancers, sing-ers, musicians, theatre sports and even a comedy act. Natalie says going to one of the schools would be a big boost for her dreams. “The big overall dream is to end up working at Broad-way in New York, but performing on the West End in London would suit me fine. I love musicals, but I’ve done all sorts. With acting, one thing leads to another, you may be doing a musi-cal one month and a movie the next. It all gives you experience.”She will have plenty of support in London too. Her father lives there and she has plenty of Nelson friends who are also pursuing their acting dreams in the English capital.Tickets for the show this Saturday, February 22, are $20 and can be bought from the Theatre Royal, Rich-mond Mall, Nelson i-Site or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz.

Future of Brook Reserve discussedThe future of the Brook Recreation Reserve, including the campground, will be discussed at a public meeting tonight. The meeting is to update residents on how the development of the draft Brook Recrea-tion Reserve Management Plan is progress-ing. The plan will set out what activities can take place within the council-owned land, which includes the recreation reserve and the Brook Motor Camp.
Through December and January, the council sought suggestions from the public and key stakeholders about how the reserve should be used in the future, what needs protection on the site and how the setting could best serve both Nelsonians and visitors to the region. The council received 28 comments in total. The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber at Civic House in Trafalgar St on Tuesday, February 17, from 5pm.

Amateur astrology photographer, Ralph Bradley, is hoping that his new Wai-iti property will soon be registered as the only silver-rated dark sky reserve in the Top of The South.Having previously lived in Richmond, Ralph was finding it increasingly harder to see the stars due to light pollution, so he moved to Wai-iti where he could view a clear night sky.“When living in a suburban area you get a sky glow and you can only see around 20 to 30 bright stars, I was amazed that I could see the entire Milky Way and stars in detail at Wai-iti, so I decided to start the registration process.”Ralph is in preliminary discussions with the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) who administer the registrations and has submitted all information required. The proposed reserve would be located around 16km from Richmond and 30km from Nelson. His long term plan is to build three observatories on the property, two dedicated to astro-photography and another for visual use. “It would be an awesome asset for the whole community, being so close to town. Mt John Observatory in the Aoraki Mackenzie is a gold-rated reserve but it is a long way from any major centre, there is now a possibility to have an extensive dark sky reserve in the Top of The South. I would like to have groups of visitors and school children come out and have a look through the telescopes at things they have never seen before, like the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter and the craters on the moon,” says Ralph.Part of the process requires public access, and Ralph has been in opening discussions with the Tasman District Council about including Wai-iti Domain and eventually incorporating adjacent Tunnicliffe Forest, making a total area of around 110 hectares.

Why no lights for Auckland Point?I would like to ask why Auckland Point School still has not got the
40km per hour speed lights set up at most schools. All I have seen done is a bit of white paint put down for controlling the traffic. I would say that the area where the school is, is an accident waiting to happen. Can anybody tell me why the 40 km flash-ing lights have not been installed at this school. Mr G Barker.
Response from Nelson City Council: Police advise that the recent changes to the pedes-trian crossing at Auckland Point and the single-laning through that area have signifi-cantly improved safety and lowered speeds.Surveys and observations show that Auck-land Point School does not currently meet the criteria for a reduced speed zone, which includes high level of on-road school-related activity, the average speed of passing vehi-cles and the number of speed-related crashes
outside the school in the past five years. If safety concerns persist then Ac-tive School warning signs could be considered in the future - these flashing active school signs raise the awareness and alertness to a higher level, but do not lower the speed limit.
Brightwater Wine & Food Fest:Was a fantastic day! Awe-some food, cider, wine
and music. Thanks Middle Earth

What a perfect day!I love Nelson Tasman.
Golfer being hit 'not funny':Not really all that funny. A visiting golfer at a course in Winchburgh,
West Lothian, Scotland, was awarded the equivalent of around 800 000, that's right,
eight hundred thousand NZ dollars, after losing the sight of an eye. The court held the golfer who hit the shot 70 per cent to blame with the club having 30 per cent for not having adequate signs warning of pos-sible hazards. It made clubs the length of the country review their course signage. Sandy L (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).
Busy weekend:What a great weekend. I took my family to the motor show, cricket
and market day on Saturday. Good on ya Nelson for having so many events on. Weather was tops, too. (Via text).

Osprey Boats began in the quintessential Kiwi way, with one man, Lloyd Elliott. His early in-volvement, passion and expertise in design and manufacture within New Zealand’s fishing boat industry led him to form Alloyd Engineering Limited. Lloyd began manufacturing specialist aluminium fishing boats almost twenty years ago and his products had to be perfect to meet the needs of his early customers in the mussel farming indus-try. The success of Lloyd’s business saw a New Zea-land range of boats un-veiled in 1996, which were immediately recognised for their excellence and safety. Osprey Boats have been purchased by a di-verse collection of groups including conservation departments, harbour boards, adventure tourism companies and the recreational market. Now, 21 years later, with the market changing so much, Lloyd is now selling Osprey Boats direct to the public. Meanwhile, one of the industry’s most experienced outboard technicians, Dennis Ellm-ers, has also gone out and started his new out-board servicing company, The Outboard Shop, on the Osprey Boats site on St. Vincent Street,
Nelson. After bumping into a couple of old school mates a few weeks ago and learning that neither of them knew anything about Osprey Boats, a plan was hatched to have an open day, not only to celebrate Osprey’s twenty-first year of production, but to spread awareness of the fact that Osprey Boats and The Outboard Shop
are right here in Nelson. Dennis is also acquiring an outboard agency and Lloyd is an OEM for an-other brand, so between them, you can source your new outboard at the same time you order your new Osprey boat, built to suit your requirements. The open day will also include the guys from Fluid3 Electronics who can demonstrate and sup-ply your GPS, radar, and fish finder on the day.
They can also install and teach you how to use all the features as part of their service. Kicking off at 9am on Saturday, February 21, there will be most models of Osprey on site, with a couple of very unique and special Osprey Boats for sale, along with a bbq, bouncy castle and some giveways. Family ride to raise funds for Child CancerChris Scott has ridden the width of the South Island 11 separate times to help raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation, this month he’ll do it with some extra motivation.Chris, his wife Sheila and son Ari, will all ride the Child Cancer Charity Ride from Greymouth to Christchurch, raising money for the house in Christchurch where young cancer patients stay.Chris says, for the first time he knows someone staying in the house. “A friend of ours, Petra Nugent, had cancer last year, and now her daughter Jemma has cancer and is currently down there having treatment and staying at the accommodation. So it means a little bit more to us this year.”The family had another cancer blow just before Christmas when Chris’ father was diagnosed with the disease. “It’s pretty tough and he’s been laid up since Christmas, but it’s great to be able to do a little bit of something going back the other way.”So far the family have collected around $500 in donations and are hoping to raise $1000, before the ride on February 20 and 21 with 30 other cyclists. The ride has been going for 28 years and has raised around $300,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation. To donate, you can deposit money into the Post Charity Bikathon account, 38-9001-0022368-00 and use “Chris Scott” as the reference.

Choosing the right bank for your business can have a significant impact on its success. If you have ever owned a small business, you will know that selecting a bank is a time-consuming process. In addition to building the business and attracting and retaining customers, there is the added stress of organising a suitable financial structure. A small business owner may look to a bank or their Accountant to help.
All banks will advertise that they have a version of a ‘business banking expert’. The level of efficiency, experience and autonomy with these staff is largely dependent on the size of your business. Turnover and debt levels are key aspects in regard to the seniority of the business banking manager that will be assigned to look after your accounts. Your location will also be a factor as many banks do not have business banking staff located in smaller towns. If you are a small business, with no or minimal debt levels, it is unlikely you will have a close and active relationship with a ‘business banking expert’. If you are also located in a smaller town, the best you can often hope for is a phone discussion via a 0800 to someone you may never meet face to face.
Think about your experience with your current bank. Who do you talk to when you have a problem with your account? Is there a branch nearby where you can make deposits conveniently? Is the person ultimately responsible for making decisions on your loan located at the local branch? As your business grows, the convenience of dealing with these types of day-to-day account issues will play a big part in your satisfaction with your banking relationship.
An established, personal relationship with a bank will make it easier for you to manage finances. The business banking market is competitive, so if you aren’t getting the personal service from your existing bank, don’t be afraid to ask for something better, or shop around for a new ‘business banking expert’. You deserve the service, no matter how big or small your business is.
Do you have a “Business Banking Expert”?

Just when I thought I had really enjoyed a quiet week back at work, it all broke loose. Well, sort of. As I went to leave the port for an appointment, I received a call from Police as it was reported a kite surfer was in diffi-culty. I immediately asked myself “how can a kite surfer get into difficulty?" Surely, if he hasn’t the skills or the experience he won’t be so far off shore as to be a danger to himself and others. Wrong again.Whilst driving along Rocks Rd to assess the situation, I meet a police woman vigilantly watching and ensuring the kite-boarder at least stays visible, afloat. A member of the public had been driving past with a surf ski on top, stopped, and paddled out to assist. A paddle-boarder paddled out from the beach to assist. Well done all of you and many thanks. The kite surfer spent more than an hour in the water. Hypothermic? Tired? The surf skier observed the kite surfer only had a rash suit top on, no floatation.I wonder, in other conditions would the kite boarder have survived as long.It may be worth considering the national law that any vessel under six metres must carry a personal floatation device suitable for each of the occupants. I am sure the kite board is less than six metres.

Q: I am pregnant and applying for parental leave. However, I am considering staying at home with my baby and not to returning to work. My partner and I are a bit scared to go down to one income. How can we prepare for this?
A: Use this time of earning two incomes to prepare:
Write up a budget of the new income and outgoings so you know what your costs will be.
Pay off high interest loans (credit card, loan company debt) while you can.
Set up a smooth-pay option for your power.Set up a savings account to save for a financial
buffer (enough to live for 2 months without income is ideal).
Set up small weekly automatic payments to services you may use regularly, such as your doctor, dentist and firewood supplier.
Prioritise spending on needs, rather than wants. Think of ways to earn extra money easily from
home.

Motorbike club to host charity party The Reapers Motorbike Club is hosting a heck of a party at Owen River next month and while they’re there they will be raising money for a good cause. The annual party is now in its third year and will see a couple of hundred motorbike enthusiasts head down to the Owen River Domain. The family-friendly event is welcome to anyone but does have a motorbike focus. A live band, A.M.O.S, will entertain party-goers on Saturday night and club member Tony Dawson says it will be a great weekend.“This is the first year we’ve really advertised it to people outside our social club and usually we get around 150 people, so we’re expecting a few more this year.”Raffles will be held during the weekend to raise money for Child Cancer Research. The Owen River Party is being held on March 6 and 7 at the Owen River Domain. Entry is $20 and food will be available on-site.

It’s almost time for kick off as football sea-son comes round again and Nelson Bays Football are happy to see that a large num-ber of players are signing up for an exciting 2015 season. The season starts on April 11, but there are plenty of things happening on the Nelson Bays Football calendar once things do get moving, says NBF’s general manager, Clive Beaumont. Nelson Bays Football facili-tate the sport in the region and developing youth is a big part of their job; the Nelson Marlborough Falcons being a pinnacle for youth players to strive for. Last sea-son the Falcons were winners of the ASB National Youth League . Their success has made the region proud and the first step on the pathway to being Falcons material is the federation talent centre which be-
gan in early February at the Avery Playing Field. The development centre was led by an exceptional cast of coaches with Mark Johnston, Andy Morris and Ben Wright taking proceedings, alongside George Campbell and Steve Clark. As the district branch of the Mainland Federation, Nelson Bays Football has a job to develop the tal-ented players in the re-gion and give them every opportunity to achieve within the game. “The idea of the talent centre is
to bring together the best coaches with the best players, allowing those committed to learning the technical skills of the game to be-come the best they can be, wheth-er that is playing in the national league, the ASB Youth League or Mainland Premier League sides, or even age group national sides,” says Clive.Football is the biggest participation sport in the region, with thousands
of players from the age of four to a select few still playing in their 60s, enjoying the game each day and every week from April through to the end of the season in Sep-tember. “There is a buzz in Nelson about football and we encourage anyone to come and be a part of it,” says Clive. “At Nelson Bays Football, we try to create games and competition and opportunities for all lev-els of the game so that players fall in love
with football, like I did many years ago, and it becomes their recreation of choice for life.” At senior level, the Nelson Suburbs Mainland side is the top club team playing in the Federation Premier League alongside seven other clubs from Christchurch. Locally, eight teams will contest the first division, along with three other senior grades for men and two for women which are played on Saturdays. Lo-cal clubs playing include FC Nelson, Nelson Suburbs, Richmond Athletic, Tahu-nanui FC, Wakefield, Waimea Plains, Mapua, Upper Mou-tere, Motueka and Golden Bay, as well as Nelson Col-lege, Nelson College for Girls, Waimea College, Garin Col-
lege and Nayland College. “It’s a great year to be involved in Football, there’s plenty of exciting things happening with the under 20 FIFA World Cup being held in New Zealand – the closest games to us being in Christchurch - so we’re go-ing to make sure people playing in Nelson enjoy it as much as anywhere,” says Clive. A special project this year is Nelson Bays Football hosting the Glasgow Rangers FC

New to NelsonOne Dental Stoke has now opened its doors, and welcomes new and existing patients to enjoy its professional and friendly service. Principal dentist Dr Keith Beasley is a general dentist with a special interest in crown and bridge work, and families – having a daughter who has special needs means Keith understands the different requirements of some families and is more than happy to cater to those needs. With over 20 years experience working in the Richmond area, Karen practices amalgam-free fillings and undertakes amalgam replacement work. She also has a special interest in I.V sedation for those nervous patients who find dental treatment challenging. Karen also has a special interest in orthodontics and will be offering Fast Braces, a new rapid brace technology which can take as little as six months to achieve beautiful straight teeth. The surgery has also been treated to a complete makeover and now features a fresh, modern interior. One Dental Stoke also offers Grey Power members a 10 per cent discount.

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Gareth Duncan and I am proud to be part of the Harcourts Nelson team. Harcourts have specialised in all aspects of Real Estate within the Nelson/Tasman region for the last 25 years and the training and support that Harcourts makes available to their team members is the most comprehensive in New Zealand, which in turn provides me with all the “tools” needed to support “you’’, my customers. After gaining my New Zealand Offshore Masters in the fishing industry and working at sea, I learnt that hard work, practical sense and persistence brings great rewards. Since buying my first home in my early twenties, I have bought and sold several properties and retained a portfolio of numerous houses spanning from Timaru to Nelson, all in geographically-diverse real estate market environments. This has also helped me understand the challenges sometimes faced by buyers and sellers. I have a passion for Real Estate and a very good ‘in the market’ knowledge of what both buyers and sellers need. If you are looking at buying or selling a home or property, I can add value to the process and make the transition of new home ownership as easy as possible. I look forward hearing from you and helping you with your success.

There’s no better way to explore Nelson’s beautiful coastline than by stand-up paddle board. It gives you a whole new perspective on what the ocean has to offer while being a great way to get active and stay fit. Moana SUP owners Toby and Bridget Wild have had a great summer after taking over the SUP business last year, and in 2015 Toby and Bridget will be offering locals the 7 SUP Club, an early morning, pre-work paddle for those with their own board or who need to rent one from Moana at a great rate. Bookings are essential for the paddle group which runs for around an hour from 7am. There is also a Yummy Mummy Paddle for mums (and dads) who have dropped kids off at school and want to get out on the water for less. Moana SUP also has on offer a fleet of boards designed specifically for school children. These are available for offsite hire and would be great for school camps or kids parties. Stay posted on all SUP news via their Facebook page or contact Toby for further information about your stand-up paddle boarding experience today.

Tank Juice is Nelson’s newest healthy alternative to food on the go. Situated at 189 Hardy Street, Tank Juice has enjoyed a bumper opening and is looking forward to carrying on this success. The company, which now has 41 stores throughout New Zealand, has grown substantially in the past year, which is good news for you. Bottled juices lose a lot of nutrients through the bottling process, mixed with the fact there is a low percentage of real fruit in there to begin with. The upside of having a freshly-made juice or smoothie from Tank is that they are made with real fruit and vegetables, so you get the real benefits. They also give you a decent potassium kick whilst being low in sodium. On top of that, Tank uses 98% fat-free natural frozen yogurt; add all these together and you have countless vitamins, minerals and protein. The benefits of this include more energy, a better immune system and generally a better-oiled machine, which is your body. Tank also offers salads and wraps, using the best ingredients out there. Their beef and chicken is top grade and non-processed, and dressings are created by chefs just for Tank.

Why buy toys when you can rent? Toys are great tools to help children’s learning, development and enjoyment, but often they grow out of them so fast that it’s a stretch on the wallet to keep up with the latest and greatest plaything, and a hassle to try find somewhere for the toys you no longer use. Angelique from ToyHire and Exchange has the answer to both these problems and her new business is so simple and easy to take advantage of. ToyHire and Exchange has a huge variety of toys in all shapes and sizes and all you need to do is pick out the ones you want to rent through her online catalogue, pay for them, and enjoy them delivered to your door. Angelique’s system is perfect for parents who are flat out, as the toys are also collected at the end of the rental period. Not only can you offer your child a selection of toys to entertain and educate whenever you like, but ToyHire and Exchange is great for saving you money and storage space. Arrangements for toy packages for visiting family or parties are also possible and a helpful exchange service means you will never be stuck with unwanted toys. The Nelson Vintage Car Club celebrat-ed their 50th anniversary last year and their next big public event is this Sat-urday’s swap meet. Originally a swap meet would include the buying, sell-ing and swapping of vintage car parts, but has now evolved into what could be called a super-sized garage sale. All sorts of items can turn up, from an-tiques, plants, art; nearly everything you can think of. “Sometimes there’s a bit of junk but even that can be anoth-er man’s treasure,” says organiser and Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Kevin Mercer. “Swap meets I’ve been involved with in the past have been for Winchester in South Canterbury and we got up to nearly 400 sites at its peak.
It was a great way of raising funds for the club and our aim now is to raise money to fund the alterations to our new clubrooms at the Nelson Speed-way Association track.” This is the first time the Nelson Vin-tage Car Club have hosted a swap meet of this size. As well as creating neces-sary funds for the organisation, it is a great platform for the public to sell items to a larger audience than they would normally get at a garage sale. The swap meet will be open from 8am on Lansdowne Rd, with the grounds needing to be cleared by 5pm, and will feature “just about anything you can imagine,” says Kevin. “I know for a fact on one of the sites there is going to be a
kitchen sink and some carpet. It can even be new, we see a lot of people who trade in tools, or some other product, end up with a bit of surplus stock that they bring along to sell.” The Nelson Vintage Car Club is far more than a monthly club meeting and with a few car rallies thrown in. Their 280 local members are passion-ate about the preservation of cars that are more than 30 years old, and the group is one of the authorities in New Zealand that have a consider-
able amount of power in assisting members with getting new restorations re-registered. “There are a lot of tough rules today that our cars can’t com-ply with for many reasons. For example, many of them don’t have seat belts, and that prevents them from being on our roads today,” says Kevin. “We also have a very strong representation to govern-ment to assist with laws around older cars, so we’re a pretty important body.” The Nelson Vintage Car Club is a branch of

a national organisation, although Nelson members were originally part of the Canterbury branch but with so much local interest it was decided to form a separate branch in 1964. The benefits of the Nelson Vintage Car Club are numerous for car enthusiasts, who not only enjoy monthly club meetings that can range from a visit to a car in the middle of be-ing restored to a night of ten pin bowling, but en-compasses a huge network of car owners available for advice and help. “I really enjoy the involvement with people,” says Kevin. “I’ve been a member of the vintage car club for 37 years and this is the third branch I’ve been chairman of. But what I’ve done over that time is build up a huge group of acquaint-ances, some of them are friends nationwide, so we can go motoring anywhere in New Zealand and, if we have a problem, there’s always somebody we can call. I would think now that more than 50 per
cent of my friends have come from the car club.” Nelson Vintage Car Club is always happy to wel-come new members, especially the younger gen-eration. Kevin says that it’s also important for the club to focus on fostering the earlier cars and pre-vent them from being exported from the country. Every year the cars eligible to be part of the Nelson Vintage Car Club grows and those interested in be-coming members are welcome to contact the club via email at [email protected] And, if you looking to pick up some bargains, don’t miss out on the Nelson Vintage Car Club Swap Meet on Saturday, February 21. A display of the club’s cars will also be there for people to check out.

Taine Williams will be kicking, sparing and power breaking his way to the ITF Taekwondo Championships in Italy this April.Taine is the only South Islander in the 58 person New Zealand team attending the Andria event. After starting taekwondo ten years ago he has worked his way up to become a black belt, a requirement to compete in the world championship"That’s the first big step," he says.Taine is competing individu-ally in the sparing and power breaking events and in a team of five for junior power. He says each event has it’s own scoring system."In sparing it’s three points for a kick to the head, two points for a kick to the body and one point for a punch anywhere."The trip will cost Taine $1800 as, being a minority sport, there is no external funding available. He is going to be looking for
sponsorship."I’m going to be fundraising at this year’s regionals, which is held in Christchurch for the whole South Island”Aaron Williams, Taine’s dad, started teaching Taekwondo shortly after Taine began class-
es. He says we are lucky in New Zealand to have such a large amount of talent within the sport.New Zealand is in the top five countries for ITF Taekwondo, with seven masters in the coun-try.

It was mission accomplished for Nelson runner Phil Costley, as he added another win and another re-cord to his name when he competed in Saturday's Buller Marathon.Phil won the 42.2km race through the Buller Gorge to Westport in 2hr 28min 27sec to beat David Askin's 1997 veteran's marathon record by 49 seconds. Phil now holds the Buller half and full, open and veteran records, but admits it was a close call on Satur-day." I knew what I had to do - I had to run three-and-a-half minute kilo-metres to give myself a shot. I did the first two kilometres in seven minutes and was one hour 13 min-utes through the first half, so I knew I was right on target."I had a couple of minutes to spare at the 20km mark but I also knew I'd need them because the second half of a marathon is always so hard. But then I started catching up with the half marathon runners with about 10km to go and that gave me a lift - I knew I was making progress."Now that Phil has achieved his "main goal for the summer" he is contemplating a start in the Roto-rua Marathon in May. He also plans
to run in the Buller Marathon again next year although he "won't be chasing a fast time"."I said I would do Rotorua but I'll wait to see how my recovery goes first. I don't know how much the Buller has taken out of me."Phil has now raced in 26 mara-thons, winning half of them.Nelson's Ian Courtenay was fourth on Saturday in 2hr 55min 28sec. Motueka's Collette Read won the women's marathon in 3hr 9min 37sec, ahead of Appleby's Carol Cooper who finished in 3hr 11min 10sec. One-hundred and fifty one runners competed in the marathon.
Phil Costley set a new record for the veterans class at the Buller Marathon on Saturday.

It was all about communication for the Waimea College senior girl’s volleyball team as they stepped off court last Saturday for some team bonding at Nel-son Fire Station. Station officer Craig Davies said the exercises they were faced with on the day tested how well
they could listen to instructions and carry them out in a foreign environment. The team spent the morn-ing being blindfolded, soaked through with a decontamina-tion shower and shut away in the dark of the fire station’s training tower, and by the end
the team all agreed it was defi-nitely worth it. This is the third year the team has done the team-building ex-ercises at the Nelson station, all in preparation for when they head off to the New Zealand Volleyball Nationals in Palm-erston North this March.

Drummond a late call up to touch world cupAndrew Board
Nicole Drummond's sporting world was turned upside-down last week when the 19 year old was picked as a late inclusion in the New Zealand mixed touch team, which is off to the world cup in April.Until last Tuesday the former Nelson College for Girls star was eyeing up a strong perfor-mance with her Tasman team at touch nationals in March, now that’s just a warm-up. She admits the call-up was a heck of a shock and she was "shaking the whole time" when the coach called her to say she had made the team.Nicole – who now attends
Auckland University – has been in New Zealand aged group teams but says a call-up to a senior team was unexpect-ed. "It's always been a goal but I didn't think it was happen for me this early."The mens, womens and mixed teams that will compete at the world cup in Coffs Harbour, Australia, have been training together for a year, but a late withdrawal made space for Nicole. "Someone withdrew for personal reasons and after that they looked at the tapes from the trans-Tasman tournament last year and the coach didn't even know who I was but he selected me off that tape."It's the second time in a week
that a Drummond has been in the right place at the right time. On Friday night, her brother Mitchell made his starting debut for the Crusaders after halfback Willie Heinz broke his leg in pre-season.Nicole says both were excit-ed about the opportunities. "We've played touch together since we were at Nayland Col-lege together, so we're pretty close and it’s been cool to watch each other’s progress."Nicole says Auckland asked her to play for them at nation-als but she was keen to repre-sent Tasman and try to win the mixed grade. "We've got a re-ally strong team and I wanted to stay loyal to Nelson."
