A section of the Maitai Walk-way was opened on Friday, but it will still be months be-fore the entire walkway will be open.Site fencing was removed on the section between the Elma Turner Library and Saltwater Creek on Friday, but access to the pontoon is still restricted. The timing meant people walking to the Tasman Ma-kos game on Friday night, and those taking part in the MS Ford Blue September Father’s Day fun run on Sunday, could

use the walkway. The link through to Akersten St and access to the pontoon will be opened in the coming weeks, once work is finished. The final length of the walk-way, the section between the Library and Trafalgar St is still to be completed. Work is starting soon on building a safer crossing at the Trafalgar St Bridge, which will provide a better link between the two sections of the popu-lar Maitai Walkway, says Nel-son City Council.

away with $1000 and the Tas-man Music Trust was given $500.Car Company owner Shane Drummond says the char-ity drive was a fantastic way to give to the community and he was blown away with the 59 entries to the competition. “There was a great cross-sec-tion and obviously plenty of need out there, so it was great to be able to help these groups.”The Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive was devised to flip requests for sponsor-ship on its head. Shane says he would get hundreds of requests for sponsorship each year so decided to run the competi-tion to see which was the most worthy. Entries were whittled down to five finalists and each of the finalists spoke to the judging panel last week. The judges – Shane, Mediaworks Nelson general manager Christine Hatton, Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board and independ-ent judge Tracey Black – then picked their winners.Manager of the Stoke Com-munity Centre, Ruth Ryan, was clearly shocked when the announcement was made

and says it will go a long way to helping the group. “I’m so stoked, it’s amazing. We were happy just to make the top five but to win it was just ‘wow’.”Ruth says the money will be used to buy a “desperately needed” commercial freezer to house some of the food they cook for their members. The Stoke Community Centre has 450 members and Ruth says many of its members had been praying for them to win. “We’d like to thank them for their prayers and to Shane for putting up the money. It’s an amazing thing to do.”

Nic Foster of the Nelson South Swim Club says the group was thrilled with what they won. “This is going to make a real difference to our community facility. It’s widely used and we really want to increase that and get more people using it.”He says the money will go to-wards inflatable pool attrac-tions and furniture that will help attract people to the pool in summer months, and the advertising will go towards promoting the facility as a des-tination. “We’ve been given a gift and with it we can pass on the gift of swimming.”

The conversion from rugby clubrooms to shopping com-plex is almost complete, with the Mad Butcher due to open its doors in early November. The Mad Butcher is one of three new businesses that will occupy the old Stoke Rugby Clubrooms, the oth-ers being Guytons and Bak-ers Delight. The Stoke Mad Butcher store will be owned by Dan and Nikki Perrin. Dan is a former Tasman Mako, Bay of Plenty, Chiefs and Crusaders rugby player and is a trained butch-er. He says the butchery will employ around ten people initially and will have a com-

munity focus. “We feel that we have positioned ourselves at the heart of a community which is going through some exciting developments. Our goal will be to offer all Nel-sonians top quality products with good old-fashioned customer service.”Guytons will open a satellite store at the site, similar to its

shop in the Richmond Mall, and the Bakers Delight is still advertising for a franchise owner. Dan says he worked at a Mad Butcher store in Christch-urch prior to becoming a professional rugby player and he’s excited about the new venture. The Stoke Rugby Club moved

out of the building – that they built in the 1970s – earlier this year and hope to have a new clubrooms within the proposed Stoke Community Centre at Greenmeadows. The building was bought by an out-of-town investor who has worked with other Mad Butcher stores around the country.

Community groups ask for $370kCommunity groups have applied for $370,000 from Nelson City Council, the only problem is the council only has $150,000 to give away.Members from the 71 applicants spoke to councillors on the community ser-vices committee on Monday, with the councillors due to make their decision on who get what today.

Of the 71 applicants for the community assistance funding, 34 were for con-tracts and 37 for one off-grants, and that included groups like Adult Learning Support, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Nel-son Civic Choir, Victory Boxing Club and the Tahunanui Community Centre. In total, the community assistance fund-ing had a pool of $388,700 this year, but

only $150,300 remains. Chair of the community services com-mittee, Pete Rainey, says it’s always tough deciding who gets what.“It’s always a challenge. It’s tricky and there’s always winners and losers in a situation like this, but we’re going to put in a really big effort to get it as fair as possible.”

Nelson Mail suffers 10% drop in circulationNelson Mail has suffered a 10 per cent drop in circulation, one of the largest decreases across the country.Latest information released by ABC Circulation, for the three month period ending on June 30, shows the Australian-owned Nelson Mail has taken a 10.67 per cent drop to its paid circulation on the same time last year, to just 11,972.The only daily newspaper in the

South Island with a bigger drop was the Timaru Herald, with 14.02 per cent. The drop means that for every four homes in its distribution area, fewer than one home receives the Nelson Mail, on average. The disappointing result is the latest in a long line of massive circulation drops for the Mail over the past five years.

All Black legend Buck Shelford was among the 109 runners and walkers who raised more than $3000 for Blue September on Father’s Day.The five kilometre fun run was organised by MS Ford as an awareness and fundraising drive for Blue September, which is held to promote awareness around prostate cancer. It’s the first time the Blue September fun run has been held and it took participants

from the new Maitai walkway, next to the Trafalgar Centre, to Miyazu Gardens,

around Founders Heritage Park and back to the start line. MS Ford dealer

principal Alan Kirby says he was thrilled with the day.“We were really nervous because we were told that it’s impossible to get men along to these events. But for a first-time event I’m delighted with the turnout and the enthusiasm of everyone there.”Alan hinted that the fun run would be back next year and he’d like to see “double the numbers”. “We’re delighted with it, it was very cool.”

Poppy makers wanted for giant Anzac display

Susan Holland of the Nelson Creative Fibre Group is en-couraging locals to make poppies out of wool, fabric or any other material for a giant poppy display at the Ca-thedral for Anzac Day next year. Photo: Andrew Board.

A giant display of handmade poppies will adjourn the front door of Nelson Cathedral during the centenary com-memorations of Anzac Day next year, and organisers want as many people as possible to be involved. The poppies can be made from wool or fabric and will be joined together to cre-ate a giant hanging display. The project is being organised by the Nelson Creative Fibre Group after they saw similar pro-jects being organised in Australia and elsewhere in New Zealand. “We decided as a group that we’d like to do something for Nelson and honour the people who went to war. And so far the response has been really positive,” says Susan Holland of the Nelson Creative Fibre Group. To get involved, email [email protected] or call Susan on 547 4329.

Begg’s Musicworks is clearing its range of hi-fi speakers and it’s the good folk Nelson who are set to benefit.Begg’s has a huge range of hi-fi speaker systems, usually priced from $1000 up. But owner Tim Bab-bage is making way for new stock and says he wants to clear the shop of its current speakers so has slashed the price, some by as much as 50 per cent. The speakers are the latest in hi-fi technology, but with many of the brands making way for new models in the next few months Tim says it is time to move the current stock on.“We usually do these kind of sales in drips and drabs but this time we’ve decided to do it in one big hit. There’s some absolute bargains here.“But the specials only apply to what’s in stock and it’s first in first served, and if people need an amp or other device to go with it we’ll look after them.”

Models are usually upgraded every four or five years but Tim says it happens that several of his suppliers are changing at the same time, which has led to the sale.

“There’s at least 30 per cent of every pair of hi-fi speak-ers in stock and in some cas-es there is even more. One set off speakers was $2800, now they’re $1400, so there’s some great savings.”Speakers range in size from the smaller “book shelf ” speakers to floor standing speakers. “Anyone looking to upgrade their speakers or looking for some great hi-fi speakers, now is the time to come in and talk with us. I’m sure people would rather listen to great sounding music in-stead of politics,” he jokes. All brands are top-of-the-line and all still have their new warranties.

Coman Construction’s Jesse Walker has been named the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Local builder wins top apprentice awardJesse Walker decided he wanted to be a builder when he was only 14. Six years later the Nelson chip-pie completed his apprenticeship with flying colours, being named the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders Carters Appren-tice of the Year. Jesse, who works for Coman Construction, received the award at a function in Blen-heim last Thursday. “I was helping out my uncle when I was 14. He was doing some work on a house and that’s when I de-cided I wanted to be a builder,” Jesse says. “I really enjoy it. No job is the same and it’s really satisfying looking at the building at the end of the day and seeing what you have achieved.”

Jesse says he did the trade building course at Nelson College and then started a building apprenticeship with Coman Construction, after leaving school in year 13 in May 2010. He completed his appren-ticeship three months ago and says he plans to stay with Comans because he enjoys working on the bigger commercial projects.Jesse was awarded an array of priz-es and will now go on to compete against the winners from eight other regions at the national com-petition in Auckland next month. Shaun Campbell, 19, of Nelson, employed by Inhaus Develop-ments was second, while Richard Anderson, 21, of Blenheim, was third.

Charity bucket stolen from MikeA Nelson man raising money for life-saving surgery has had a donation bucket stolen.Mike Corkill received a phone call last Wednesday to say an empty bucket with a photo of his family on the front had been found outside McDonald’s on Richmond’s Queen St.Mike got on the phone to some of the businesses that have a donation bucket on their counters and it was found to have been stolen from Action Indoor Sports, not far from where the bucket was found.Mike – whose campaign to

raise money was dubbed Dad’s New Lungs by his six children – says he was “gutted” by the theft. “It’s a blow. I knew there were scum bags out there but I didn’t think anyone would stoop that low.”It’s unknown how much money was in the bucket, but a staff member at Action told Mike she felt it just days before

it was stolen and described it as “quite weighty”.Staff from Action Indoor Sports are going through security footage from when the bucket was taken and Mike says he will take the image to the police.“I wanted to take it to the police because I didn’t want this person to get away with it,” he says.Mike has raised $34,500 so far but needs $100,000 for a pair of new lungs. Without a full transplant, Mike has been told he will die within a year.

Nelson wine pioneers honoured by industryWine industry pioneers, Agnes and Hermann Seifried, have been honoured by their peers, being in-ducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers 41 years after they planted their first vineyard in Up-per Moutere. Herman and Agnes received the honour at the annual Bragato Conference and Wine Awards, held in Blenheim on August 28. It is the first time either a couple or a female has been inducted into the fellowship which started in 1982, and Agnes says she is humbled by the honour. “After forty years of wine produc-tion, we are so very proud to be acknowledged in this way," she says. "It is humbling to be part of such an amazing group, many of whom we have worked with and respected over the years."Agnes and Hermann first planted grapes on two hectares of land in Upper Moutere in 1973, making Seifried Estate the first commer-cial vineyard, not only in the Nel-son region, but anywhere in the South Island. It was a bold deci-sion at a time when many people, including Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries advisors, thought that the South Island was unsuit-able for wine growing."We went to the bank for a loan but they didn't want to know us," Agnes says. "Everyone told us we were mad planting in Upper Mou-tere, but we did it anyway."

Seifrieds produced their first vintage in 1976, selling the wine through the cellar door and mail orders to friends and family who had heard about the wines. They planted a further 16 hectares in Redwood Valley and continued to expand, today employing about 40 full-time staff and growing over 200 hectares of grapes across eight vineyards. "I still have the old ad-dress book with all the names of the people who ordered our wine," Agnes says. "I used to hand ad-dress 4000 mail orders each year and put them on the old Newmans bus that came by the winery."Today, Agnes and Hermann's three children also work at Sei-fried Estate, with Chris and Heidi involved in viticulture and win-emaking and Anna taking a role in sales and marketing. All three have gained tertiary qualifications in the wine industry. Although Hermann has stepped back from the winemaking and marketing, he is still busy in the vineyard and says he really enjoys the hands-on aspects of the work. "I enjoy the whole process and it's satisfying being involved with eve-rything that goes into making the end result. It's also very rewarding when someone says 'that is a very good wine'."

FREE MONEY FOR TRUSTS: The Nelson Bays Community Foundation is preparing to give more money to the community via its general endowment fund. Applications close Wednesday, October 8.

Two Nelson early childhood teachers, Jo Brown and Linda Hansen, are doing their bit to help the environment by developing and marketing a new eco-friendly food wrapper made of cotton and beeswax.Jo and Linda officially launched the wrapper, which they have named Happbee Wrap, at the Richmond market held at the A & P Showgrounds last Saturday. The pair have formed a small

business making handcrafted, eco-friendly items and they are hoping Happbee Wrap will provide a green alternative to plastic food wraps."We have enjoyed making things for a long time now and used to joke about starting a business to sell these things, and now we have done it," Jo says. "Linda saw the idea of a cotton food wrap and we thought it had lots of potential for it for our business. We know quite a few schools and kindergartens already discourage plastic wraps in the children's lunches so there

was an opportunity for us to make something like this. We hope our wrap will become a product that will be used by the wider community to help protect our environment."Jo says the name Happbee Wrap is pronounced happy wrap "as opposed to Glad Wrap, or Sad Wrap as some people call it". The wrap is made from cotton fabric infused with beeswax they obtained from Jo's son-in-law Nick Milne, who is a beekeeper. It is washable in cool, soapy water.

American summer camps are on the hunt for locals to go and work in the camps next winter.IEP are hosting an information evening at NMIT on Thursday night for those interested in heading along to the states to work with kids in the camps. Nelson woman Emma Sullivan has just finished a stint in the US and says she loved the “adventure”. “I decided I needed to see the world before I got too serious about my future. I’d heard about Summer Camp USA and decided it sounded like the sort of adventure she was looking for.”She says she was based at Camp Pinecliffe in Maine and she was a small craft instructor, which meant she taught sailing, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding. “Best job ever! In the evenings and mornings I stayed with my bunk of 10 girls who were aged 10 years old. Just hanging out, plaiting hair, painting nails and making sure they were ready for their day of activities.”There were tough times, she says, mainly when the young girls were homesick. “But when you’re trying to console them and distract them with something else, it’s really hard not to think about your own family. All I wanted was a cuddle from my mum too.”The information evening for people aged between 18-30, is on September 10 at 6pm. It is in room T309, Level 3, T Block at NMIT. For more information visit www.iep.org.nz

Young professionals have a ballTickets are now on sale for the Nelson Young Professionals ball, the group’s premier event. The group’s fifth annual ball will be held on October 11 at the Boat House on Wakefield Quay.Committee member Wes Malcolm says the 140 tickets are now on sale for the Casino Royale-themed ball. “This is our premier event of the whole year so we’re expecting tickets to sell pretty quickly. “This year’s theme is Casino Royale, thanks to Jens Hansen, so there will be

plenty of decorations – it will be done properly. We’ve spent a lot of time and money to make the event top class.”

Wes says the ball is for anyone in their 20s or 30s and you don’t have to have had any association with the group before.“It’s open to absolutely everyone, but if you’re a signed up member tickets are $49 and if you’re not, tickets are $70. That covers your alcohol and food for the night and we’ll have two great bands playing throughout the night,” he says. “It will be a fantastic night.”Wes says there will also be security and dedicated taxi zones.People wanting to buy tickets for the ball can visit www.nyp.co.nz.

A dynasty of tree-planters were special guests at the 60th anniver-sary celebrations of the Coronation Forest, held in the forest near the top of the Spooners. The forest was opened on June 8, 1954, when primary school chil-dren from around the Nelson re-gion each planted a tree to com-memorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The tree-planting became an an-nual event and last Friday about 70 people, including families who have been involved in the tree planting for three generations, at-tended the anniversary celebra-tions."I planted my first tree here in 1958 when I was at Wakefield School," Stanley Brook's Geraldine Carle-ton says. "I remember it clearly because it snowed - it was freezing.""My daughter also planted a tree here when she was at school and now it's my grandsons' turn. My father, Ray Mansbridge, was a woodsman at Golden Downs for five years as well, so we have a long association with the forest."Geraldine's daughter Karen Carle-ton, also of Stanley Brook, planted a tree in the forest when she was at Tapawera Area School about 30 years ago. This week Geraldine's grandsons, Kahu Heta and Jack Hicks, continued the family tradi-tion by planting their first trees in the forest.Pupils from nine schools attended last week's anniversary and Stoke School principal Pete Mitchener

says visiting Coronation Forest is a good experience for the children because it gives them an insight into the forestry industry. "It makes the children realise the importance of forestry to Nelson - it's such a big part of our history and economy," Pete says. "It also ties in with our topic on manaaki-tanga, where we learned about looking after resources and the en-vironment." Nelson Forests Andrew Karalus says Coronation Forest was the "brainchild" of Arnold Cork, a sen-ior agricultural advisor to the Nel-son Education Board. Andrew estimates that 40,000 chil-dren have planted trees in the for-est over the last 60 years with about 350 visiting the forest this week. The anniversary also featured a presentation to long-serving for-estry workers, John Ward and Don Cooper, and prizes for an school essay competition won by Mahana School's Bradley Gale. Musician Roger Lusby also per-formed a song he was commis-sioned to write for the 60th anni-versary.New Zealand under-20 football star, Emily Jensen, was a guest speaker at the anniversary, which was also attended by representa-tives of Ngati Toa who are the new owners of Coronation Forest fol-lowing the Te Tau Ihu treaty settle-ment.

the creation of The Indian Cafe. She is also passionate about in-teracting with their customers and making sure everyone is well looked after during their time at the cafe. The other two integral members of the team are head chef Bobby Chapagai and Maitre D Denise Gibson. Bobby is very particular about what he serves to his custom-ers and, ever since day one of The Indian Cafe, he has led the kitchen team to create consist-ently superb Indian cuisine. He brings a huge wealth of knowl-edge and the very best recipes you will ever have the pleasure of tasting. Denise has also been with the cafe since the beginning and has a wonderful way with peo-ple, says Paul. Customers are always looked after to the best of her ability and if there is ever a problem, Denise will handle it so no one leaves disappointed. After al-most 12 years of running the business and still maintain-ing success with customers and loyal staff, it’s easy to see that The Indian Cafe are doing

something right. The cafe itself is accommodat-ed in an old villa and mixes the character and warmth of yes-terday with the freshness and buzz of today. The music and design work together to cre-ate an Indian experience and warm ambience for customers. It is a place to feel at home, ei-ther inside at their intimate ta-ble settings or outside in their great courtyard area, and if you have a larger party for dinner,

their 20 person private dining space is the perfect spot. Whether it’s a meal before the movies, something to take away and enjoy at home or if you are in for a whole evening of excellent Indian food, The Indian Cafe can cater to all of your dining needs. Recently Paul and Monu moved to Australia for a change of scene and to create another branch of The Indian Cafe; sharing their love of hos-pitality and great food with our neighbours in Brisbane. They still return to Nelson often as they continue to manage both businesses. So when you are after a restaurant that offers quality cuisine, warm ambi-ence and friendly service, Paul, Monu and the team welcome you to dine with The Indian Cafe and take a trip to India on your taste buds. Awards

As you walk through the door of the Indian Cafe, you will instantly feel the warmth and homeliness of a welcom-ing smile and the fantastic aromas of inspired Indian cuisine. Founded in the heart of Nelson in 2002 by Paul Lokhande and his wife Monu, The Indian Cafe has been the Indian restaurant of choice for locals and tourists alike, and for nearly 12 years they have proudly served their loyal customers with the highest qual-ity food and presentation, continually striving for culinary excellence and a memorable dining experience. Paul has been involved in the hospital-ity business his entire life, starting back in India 30 years ago with a degree in art and hotel management and cater-ing technology. In 1990, he moved to New Zealand and spent five years working in a resort in Auckland be-fore spending time in both Invercargill and Christchurch. Finally settling in Nelson, Paul worked in a couple of dif-ferent restaurants before bringing his skills and expertise to the Harbourlight restaurant for five years as manager and eventually as a partner.

In 2002 Paul and his wife Monu went a step fur-ther and opened their own business in Nelson. Situated on Bridge St the cafe only seated around 40-50 people, but in 2005 their hard work and dedication paid off when they took home the award for Outstanding Ethnic Cuisine in the hospitality awards. They did it again in 2008 after moving to their current Collingwood St prem-ises, but 2014 has been the most successful year for The Indian Cafe with three new titles to hang on their wall for Restaurant of the Year, Out-standing Ethnic Cuisine and Waiter/Maitre D of the year. Paul says that winning these awards has meant a lot to both him and the team, and they are extremely proud to have received such great results considering the high calibre of the com-petition they were up against. The Indian Cafe’s success comes down to some great food and a welcoming atmosphere which, in turn, is thanks to a fantastic staff. While Paul brings his skills to the management side of the cafe, his wife Monu is the creative in-fluence and is responsible for bringing that au-thentic Indian feel to their customers dining ex-perience. Monu moved to New Zealand in 2000 and has been a great support to Paul throughout

Measuring 12m x 26m, the barge is like a small, floating, two storey building which processes up to 250m³per hour and produces more gold than was originally expected. JLE are well

GENERATIONS OF NELSON PRESENTS

A BOOM TOWNIn 1854, just 13 years after set-tlement, Nelson was still a small town of around 350 homes. But it was booming. It supported five flour mills, four breweries, four brick kilns, a candle factory, two

cloth looms, three cooperages to provide barrels for freighting, a flax mill and two tanneries. The district also had three coal mines, a copper mine, two lime quarries, a ship yard, boat yard and five sawmills.

In considering a return trip to Tonga with a school group we started to think about the huge importance of the up-coming centenary of Gallipoli and of the ANZAC troops and then subsequently the history, culture and sights which are found in Turkey.

We also decided that the actual centenary would be too fraught for a school group but that going over just a few months before could be a very powerful experience for some lucky students.

Now 18 months later we have 23 students, including 6 from Nelson College for Girls, about to leave for Turkey

(20th September) for a three week adventure.

The trip will have many highlights such as 6 days explor-ing in and around the ancient city of Istanbul with its cul-ture, history and markets, visiting the ruins of Ephesus, the pink and white Terraces of Pumakale and Cave City of Cappadocia. The standout highlight will undoubtedly be two and a half days retracing the history of the Gallipoli campaign. We hope to follow the steps of the Nelson / Wellington regiment from Anzac Cove to Chanak Bair as well as visit the many historical sites just before the hundredth an-niversary. The students are looking into any family his-

tory they have associated with the campaign. We have researched and found the names of every Nelson College Old Boy who died while serving on the Gallipoli Penin-sula and have the locations of each of their graves or me-morials. We will visit each one of the sites as part of the trip.

The students have been actively fundraising with fire-wood sales, support from local businesses and many tak-ing on part time jobs to make the adventure possible. We would like to thank all who have supported the students in getting to Turkey and Gallipoli.

Growing your own fresh food is an attractive proposition for many people, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Agribusiness Training are offer-ing keen gardeners the chance take part in their vegetable production course, a 10-12 month course of part-time study that looks at a number of important elements for the successful production and maintenance of plants. Agribusi-ness is a national agriculture/hor-ticulture training provider and, through their year long course, stu-dents can complete a National Cer-

tificate in Horticulture, an industry recognised qualification. It’s not just for those looking to join the horticulture industry, home gardeners with a desire to improve their skills are more than welcome to take part and learn from local tutor, Kirsty Tough, as she guides them through the ins and outs of what can be a very rewarding hob-by or career. The course covers a number of top-ics, from plant botany and under-standing how plants work, to plant care, soil structure and using fer-tilisers and pest, disease and weed

control. Understanding plants is key to growing the best produce but the great thing about this course is that the lessons they learn are rel-evant to more than just vegetables. “It doesn’t have to be someone who is planting a vege garden,” says Kirsty. “We can apply all the prin-ciples we are learning to any sort of gardening, so you can plant flower gardens, trees and shrubs, any sort of horticulture growth.” To grab a spot in the next course that starts on September 24, call the Agribusiness office on 0508 247 428 ext 4 for an enrolment pack.

The Gun Shop in Motueka is offering one of their more fun prizes with their current promo-tion “win a deer”. Co-proprietor James Simpson says he and his dad Neil came up with the idea after listening to what their customers thought would be a great prize. The newly-opened firearms shop, opposite KFC in Motueka, is offering customers to go into a draw to shoot a fat fallow hind, with Doughboy Safaris in Murchison. Simply spend $50 or more to be eligible for the draw. “It’s a great opportunity for someone to fill the freezer and we guarantee that our winner will get one,” says James. The competition is open until it's drawn on Oc-tober 20. More details in store.

The Tahuna Community Centre is far more than just a great preschool; they are a group of staff dedicated to looking after and supporting their community. The centre currently oc-cupies a building on Burrell Park which has been over-stretched for some time, and the expansion of the centre into a new building already on the grounds is an exciting pros-pect, not just for those who work there, but also for the community who will benefit from a wider range of support and activities. Far from simply offering a place to take your

children for preschool, the Tahuna Com-munity Centre has always been there to help families connect and be within reach of sup-port when it is needed. One of the important roles the centre caters to is meeting the needs of the high deprivation in the area and they do this through working with a service called Food for Families. Every Tuesday evening, between 5:30 and 6:30, a meal is provided for any families who wish to come along, enjoy the food and meet and socialise with other people. The Centre is also starting a series of cook-

ing classes that aim to provide those participating with reci-pes and ideas that are endlessly adaptable to each individual situation. Each class will focus on a different theme includ-ing lunchbox week, party food week and some easy and tasty dinners to make cooking for a family less of a hassle. • Tahuna Community Centre have a number of activities for getting active and out there, like their weekly Way2Go walking group which takes in the sights and sounds of the community from the footpath or wherever your feet take you. If walking isn’t your thing, maybe gar-

dening is a hobby you’d like to do socially. Join the Garden Group each month for a dif-ferent topic/venue to learn about alongside a group of likeminded enthusiasts. The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month for two hours so if it sounds like something

to satisfy your green fingers then contact the centre and get stuck in. • Summer will see twilight netball start at Saxton, or take part in one of their two cy-cling groups, Rusty Riders for those who

haven’t been in the saddle for a while or Monday Movers for those who are keen to ex-plore the railway reserve and our other great bike paths in the area. • Maybe you prefer more reserved activities, Tahuna Community Centre has its

own Thursday Book Club. A new book is read each month and dissected along with some tea and coffee. It’s a great way to read something new and enjoy a lively discussion afterwards. • Playgroup and Preschool are also there

for children to learn and develop in a welcoming and friendly environment, it’s also a great opportunity for parents to connect with other mothers and fa-thers in the community, and a new adult-friendly space featuring a fitness circuit is another way of bringing peo-ple together whether they are parents with children in the preschool or people looking to get active close to home and for low cost. Already the centre has such a diverse and exciting range of activities on offer to bring the community together and with their new building on the way, the staff are looking forward to the new oppor-tunities they can embrace and provide for people. Family support will be much more accessible as the building will offer staff far more privacy as they help guide

members of their community facing issues towards a positive outcome or further help. The centre are keen to hear from the public so they can get an idea of what people want the centre to be and will be holding a public meeting later on to discuss how the centre can be used. Groups looking for a place to base themselves are also welcome to contact the staff about how they can help grow and accommodate their activity within the Tahu-na Community Centre. For more informa-tion on any of these services, or to make an appointment or enquiry, contact the friendly team on 548 6036.

Croquet is harder than it seems and Nelson mayor Rachel Reese found that out first-hand at the croquet opening day last Saturday. With no croquet experience to call on Rachel began the opening day by running the first hoop of the season and then it was game on. Croquet Nelson is the umbrella organisation for all clubs in the Nelson region, of which there is Nelson Hinemoa, Richmond and Riwaka. Their opening day at the Hinemoa club last weekend was a chance for the members of all three clubs to get together, catch up with old acquaintances and prepare for the new season when friends be-come foes as they compete against each other in the upcoming tour-naments. It was a successful day for the organisation with many mem-bers turning out for a spot of Golf Croquet, One-Ball and anything else that took their fancy. 'Croquet is for life' is a motto held

in high esteem by the organisation and people of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come and give it a go. For more information on the sport, contact publicity officer Marion Prentice on 539 1121.

umpire, even in a part-time role, is invited to come along to the Umpires Association’s AGM on Wednesday, September 10 from 7.30pm, at the Turf Hotel in Stoke.Or contact Umpires Association president Barry Blommaart 545 1398, appointments Errol Mil-lar 546 7928 or secretary Damian Chapman 544 9709.

Last year the Tahuna Tennis Club celebrated one of its best ever seasons, winning three major inter-club trophies – and this season hasn’t started off too bad either. The club hosted its annual open day on Saturday and club cap-tain Mike Delaney says the club is in good heart. “We’ve got a really important sponsorship agreement with the Speight’s

Ale House and a good strong membership of over 100.”He says another eight adults and more than 30 juniors signed up on the open day and he encourages anyone wanting to join up to get in touch. “All the inter-club competition is played during the week and on Saturday’s we have our club day, which is for players of all ability, everyone is welcome to

come along.”Mike says the club is lucky to also have a top quality coach in Suzanne Spencer, who is available to coach children and adults. Club day starts at 1pm every Saturday and anyone is wel-come to come along and join in. For more information on the club or its coaching, visit www.tahunanuitennis.co.nz.

The organisers of the inaugu-ral Wily Weka rogaine held around Nelson on Saturday got it just right, with the course presenting a perfect challenge for all the teams. Two hundred and seventy competitors entered the teams' event run by the Nel-son Orienteering Club and one of the organisers, Brent Edwards, admits he was a little concerned that they hadn't made the course chal-lenging enough for the top competitors. But after a few 11th hour additions, the organisers de-signed a perfect course that had the top teams cover-ing about 50 kilometres in six hours and almost nail-ing all 65 check-points. The course started at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology in Nelson, and ranged from the Botanics, Grampians, Tahunanui and

Port Hills to Walters Bluff. Trevor Voyce and Ash White-head won the men's six-hour race with 2400 points, while Ingrid Richter, Suzie Wood and Eloise Fry teamed-up to win the women's section with 2300 points. Jacqui Keay, Brendan Carney and Mike Sheperd won the mixed section with 2240 points. "Trev and Ash only missed three or four check-points

and it sounds like it could have been all on to get them all if they had planned their route a little better," Brent says. "We weren't sure if we had enough check-points so we did end up putting some more out at the last minute - I don't know if it was good luck or good management, but we got it just right."Trevor agreed, saying "it was a great event and it makes

you really appreciate where you live". In the three-hour race, Alex and Di Grigg won the mixed section with 1010 points, Malcolm Edridge, Nigel Kelly and Brad Wallace won the men's with 1070 points, and Tracey Perry and Mandy Medcalf-Stephens won the women's section with 1110 points.Brent says the event went smoothly, although the start and finish for the two races were "mayhem"."The start is like dropping a bag of marbles, the competi-tors scatter everywhere and then you don't see them until the finish three or six hours later and then it's mayhem again. But it went surpris-ingly well for a first-time event so we'll definitely look at running it again."The Nelson Orienteering Club's next event is this Sun-day at Tahunanui, starting from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

“Get Some Magic In Your Life”

With the Saxton Stadium una-vailable on Saturday due to Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament, Nelson Netball played their semi-finals on Sunday. All grades, excluding Premier 1, had 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 meeting in the semis, where there were some closely contested games. The winners will meet in Sat-urday’s final.Premier 1 sees a major and mi-nor semi format – the first and second battle it out for the di-rect route to the final, while the loser plays the winner of the third and fourth seed game. All four coaches were in agree-ment that any team, on any given day, could come away with the spoils. And that state-ment was no more evident than in the closeness of Sun-day’s games. While Stoke NBS had won two of their three encounters against Prices Pharmacy, they were by no means compla-cent going in the sudden death game. Prices had a 16-14 ad-vantage at the first break and increased the margin to 30-27 at half time. Often the ball the defence won was turned over before the ball could be con-verted. With neither team able to dominate, it was a case of

sticking to the game plan and playing your own game. While the attempts were simi-lar in the second half, it was Stoke NBS shooters, Megan Thomson and Rebecca Dud-ley who were more accurate, although Prices goal shoot Shevaun Collier returned com-mendable stats overall.Stoke NBS had an impressive final quarter 14-9 to take the game 52-48 and book a date with Jacks OPD on Thursday at 7pm.One could be forgiven for thinking that Richmond and

Jacks were taking turns at win-ning – Jacks won the first and third rounds, while Richmond turned the tables in the second round and the all-important semi on Sunday. As expected, there was abso-lutely nothing in it as the teams could not be separated after fif-teen minutes. Jacks scored on the buzzer at half time to put their noses in front by 30 – 29.Richmond kept their com-posure to score six of the last seven goals, to record the 60-56 win and book their berth in Saturday’s final.
