Benedict had declared his

A MOMENT

OF

HISTORY: THE “SEDE VACANTE”

OF BENEDICT XVI’S DEPARTURE

TTTThis Sunday is the last Sunday we will hear the name of Benedict XVI in the prayers at Mass for the Pope. Next Sunday, when we come to Mass, the Chair or Seat of St. Peter will be empty—in Latin Sede Vacante. No prayers will be made for the Pope because we will have no Pope. This sedevacantist state of affairs continues until a new Pope is chosen in Conclave. On Thursday of this week, February 28th, Pope Benedict XVI will cease to be Pope as of 8:00 PM Rome time (2:00 PM our time). It is an historical moment for us to be aware of as we are living it. A great deal of commentary accompanies this news event—some of it astute, much of it blather. Hostile and clueless journalists try to make a sensation out of the Pope’s decision as if it has created a state-of-affairs which threatens the Church’s deepest beliefs. Example: How can the Pope’s infallibility be maintained if a Pope resigns? Easy—the charism of Papal Infallibility, as a defined dogma, belongs to the Office, not to the individual man who has freely renounced it.

To the contrary, Pope Benedict has chosen a very careful way to minimize even administrative disruption. We do not have to go far back in history to consider an example of the difficulties to the Church in modern times when a reigning Pope’s life-span outlasts his abilities to exercise the weighty responsibilities of his ministry. Such a situation prevailed in the last years of the reign of Pope Pius XII (1954-1958). The Pope nearly died in 1954 and never fully recovered his strength after that, although the true state of affairs was not widely known. Inside the Vatican, however, access to the Pope was carefully controlled by his housekeeper, a German nun Mother Paschalina Lehnert. Among other things she was nicknamed “La Popessa” (the lady-pope) for her power behind the scenes. Upon Pius’s death in September, 1958, Mother Paschalina was sent packing. Before the Conclave, Cardinal Roncalli (who would emerge from it as Pope John XXIII) wrote to his priest-nephew to stay away from Rome and then wrote to the nephew’s bishop to re-enforce the order: “I have already written to him to say that on no account should he move until he has my approval. The atmosphere here is so foul with verbal malice and the press that the weary old remark is bound to be heard: ‘Here’s the nephew, here come the relatives’.” The undue influence of Pius XII’s nephews during the last period of his reign had put an onus on Cardinal-elector’s nephews. As Pope John’s biographer Peter Hebblethwaite writes: “Though he [Roncalli] did not hold Pius XII personally responsible for the unsavory atmosphere, he recognized that from 1954, date of Pius’ grave illness, the pontificate had been dominated by intrigue, nepotism and gossip. He welcomed the conclave as a chance to make a fresh start.” (John XXIII: Pope of the Century, rev. edition, A.D. 2000.)

FRIDAY DEVOTIONS DURING LENT: “VIA CRUCIS”—TRADITIONAL

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be held on all Fridays during Lent at 7:30 PM in the

main church, followed by a Lenten sermon, the distribution of Holy Communion outside of Mass, and concluding with

Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

This Year’s Lenten Sermon Theme will be the PLOT TO KILL GOD, reflections on

the Soviet Union’s 70 year attempt to make religion disappear from the minds of men. The main source for these sermons is Paul

Froese’s 2008 book: The Plot to Kill God: Findings from the Soviet Experimentation in

Secularization.

“The Church is dead!...For the vanguard of the World Proletariat there can be no neutrality or

indifference in the question of religion. The brain and hearts of the working class are here at stake; the

struggle must be waged, of course, by modern methods, by methods of exhortation, by opposing the results of scientific research to the phantasmagoria of superstition. But this fight must go on—on to the

ultimate victory.” —Soviet Communist Party Manifesto, 1923

By this Purgatorial Society, the names of our dead friends and relatives may be enrolled (either as

individuals or in aggregate), and prayed for especially in the 52 Masses that will be offered in the parish

each year for the intention of the Purgatorial Society. The requested offering for a perpetual enrollment is $20.00. (White leatherette enrollment envelopes are available in the vestibule of the rectory.) The prayers we have offered at Mass for the souls of the faithful

departed are both an expression of our belief in individual survival after the event of bodily death and

of a charity towards our neighbor which reaches beyond the grave.

“It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from

sins.” (II Machabees 12:46)

“If a compassionate charity towards all that are in any distress, even towards the most undeserving, be an essential ingredient of a Christian spirit, and one in which the very

soul of religion and piety towards God consists, how much more should we exert our charity for those in spiritual need, no

longer able to help themselves, and perhaps bound to us by ties of blood or friendship?”

Second Sunday In Lent

Vestments: Violet

INTROIT: Psalm 24: 6, 3, 22 Remember, O Lord, Thy depths of compassion, and Thy mercies that are from the beginning of the world, lest at any time our enemies rule over us: deliver us, O God of Israel, from all our tribulations. Psalm 24: 1-2 To Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul: in Thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed. V. Glory be to the Father.

COLLECT: O God, who seest that we have no power whatever from ourselves; keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts which may hurt the soul. Through our Lord.

EPISTLE: 1 Thessalonians 4: 1-7 Brethren: We pray and beseech you in the Lord Jesus that, as you have received from us, how you ought to walk and to please God, so also you would walk, that you may abound the more. For you know what precepts I have given to you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from fornication, that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the passion of lust, like the Gentiles that know not God: and that no man overreach nor circumvent his brother in business: because the Lord is the avenger of all these things, as we have told you before and have testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto sanctification: in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GRADUAL: Psalm 24: 17-18 The troubles of my heart are multiplied: deliver me from my necessities, O Lord. V. See my abjection and my labour, and forgive me all my sins.

TRACT: Psalm 105: 1-4 Give glory to the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.

V. Who shall declare the powers of the Lord: who shall set forth all His praises? V. Blessed are they that keep judgment and do justice at all times. V. Remember us, O Lord, in the favour of Thy people: visit us with Thy salvation.

GOSPEL: Matthew 17: 1-9 At that time Jesus taketh Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: and He was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and His garments became white as snow. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with Him. And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him. And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said to them: Arise, and fear not. And they lifting up their eyes saw no one, but only Jesus. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man till the Son of Man be risen from the dead.

OFFERTORY: Psalm 118: 47, 18 I will meditate on Thy commandments, which I have loved exceedingly: and I will lift up my hands to Thy commandments, which I have loved.

SECRET: Peacefully look down, we beseech Thee, O Lord, upon these sacrifices, that they may both increase our devotion and contribute to our salvation. Through our Lord.

Preface of Lent

COMMUNION: Psalm 5: 2-4 Understand my cry: hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God: for to Thee will I pray, O Lord. POSTCOMMUNION We humbly beseech Thee, almighty God, that we whom Thou hast strengthened with Thy sacraments, may henceforth serve and please Thee in worthiness of life. Through our Lord.
