Mass is the amount of matter (“stuff”) in an object.
What is mass?
The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram (g).
Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.
What is volume?
The base unit of volume in the metric system is the liter (L or l).
We will be using graduated cylinders to
find the volume of liquids and other objects.
Measuring Volume
The curve at the surface of a liquid is called a meniscus.
What is the meniscus?
The meniscus of most liquids curves up at the sides, making the center appear lower.
This happens because the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.
Reading the meniscus
Read from the bottom of the
curve!
ALWAYS READ AT EYE LEVEL

Formula for the volume of a regular object:
Volume = length x width x height_____ X _____ X _____ = _____
Measuring Solid Volume
The volume of a solid object is expressed in
cubic centimeters (cm3) and cubic meters (m3):
10 cm 8 cm 9 cm 720 cm3
We can measure the volume of irregular objects using water
displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______
About of H2O without object = ______
Difference = Volume = ______
