preparation. And we are proud that these titles are not
only a big success in the German speaking countries, but
also found their readers in other languages. So, please
feel free to ask for the language rights for your markets
as well!
Our programme for young readers is continuously grow-
ing: The combination of love and suspense proved to be
the best way to fi ll young readers from 14 and up with
enthusiasm.
New in our non-fi ction segment is a title about the most
fashionable topic carving for kids. Sales for this new

→ Daily family life from a child’s point of view: told strikingly and authentically
→ Tumultuous reading and read-aloud fun
Grandma is turning 75 and Lilly wants the entire family to
perform a fl amingo dance to celebrate the day. Hannah can
certainly understand that dad doesn’t want to don a pink
fl amingo costume. And anyway: how are they supposed to
compete with this weird number against dad’s
brother and his super family? Much goes
wrong, of course, during the big family
celebration. And when dad fi nally does
perform as a dancing fl amingo, nobody
knows what’s going on, but everyone is
having a great time.

A Success Story
→ Backstory:
Originally titled The Three Investigators, the series was created
by journalist and author Robert Arthur in the early 1960s and
published by Random House. After Robert Arthur's death, the
series was continued by an entire team of authors but drew only
a small fan base, which led to its discontinuation in the United
States in 1987. It turned out more successful in Germany where
more than 150 volumes have been published by Kosmos since
1993. These are based on Arthur's concept but have mainly been
written by German authors.
→ The characters:
The Three ??? Justus Jonas, Bob Andrews und Peter Shaw live in
fi ctitious Rocky Beach, CA. The three young friends established a
detective club and solve their cases with a great deal of intel-
ligence, humor and instinct. The three investigators are united
by a close friendship and their joint interest in solving criminal
cases.
→ The adventures:
The stories of the three detectives stand for consistent quality
and educationelly invaluable children's literature. Their cases
involve criminology topics, seemingly supernatural phenomena
and spooky adventures. The Three ??? is safe for children and
does not contain brutality or bloody scenes. There are no fantas-
tic endings; the claim to reality is adapted to the target group's
level of understanding.
→ More than 15 million books sold since the series' start
→ The Three ??? cult enthralls old and new fans
→ Target group
Boys and girls ages 9 to 14. In addition, there is a base of adult fans who have read or listened to The Three ??? during their childhood and remain loyal to the series

Since 1999, The Three ??? Kids is targeting an audience
considerably younger than The Three ???'s fan base. The stories
are more appropriate for younger children and
narrated in a less complex manner. Moreover, the 10-year old
detectives are signifi cantly younger than the boys in the
original series. In a playful and mostly unintentional way,
the three main characters get involved in exciting cases,
using their brains and humor to solve them. Since extraordi-
nary powers are not required, the kids are able to succed on
their own. Similar to The Three ???, there is no brutality in the
stories. Dangerous situations do not cross the line of what is
eductionally justifi able.
The series is aimed at young readers ages 8 to 10 and
appeals to both boys and girls. The books are rich in images
and their stories straightforward so that especially fi rst
graders will like them.
They also promote reading in general as
there are no social, political or religious
undertones. The series is designed to
appeal to an international audience.
The invidual volumes do not build
on each other so that there are no
consecutive story lines.

THE THREE !!!
19
The Three !!! is a classic detective series for girls age 10 and up
and thus a mirror of the series The Three ???. Kim, Franziska and
Marie are three hobby detectives from an unnamed city.
Playfully, the three girls get mixed up in fascinating cases they
solve with intelligence, courage, and humor.
In their cases The Three !!! deal with all criminology topics, with
apparently supernatural phenomena and also with spooky
stories. To solve their cases they do not require unsual skills.
Dangerous situations do not exceed the boundaries of educatio-
nally justifi able stories. All cases are bloodless and free of
brutality.
The brand The Three !!! is timelessly modern. The stories take
place in the immediate present. The focus is the three girls'
friendship. They trust each other one hundred percent and can
depend on each other. Team spirit is in demand. Their world is
mostly familiar to the reader. The reader can quickly orient
herself in each volume. Most cases take place in The Three !!!'s
hometown, only during vacations do the three detectives travel
– under adult supervision – within Germany or Europe. The
volumes are not based on each other.
