1. “Iwastoldtowearmydenture/s24hoursaday”.Currentguidelinesrecommendremovalofdentures,ideallyovernight.However,evenjustremovingthemforsomeperiodoftimeduringtheday,whenthewearerfeelscomfortableto,isbetterthannothingatall.Thisallowsthetissuestorestandreducestheriskoforalinfections,suchasdenture-associatederythematouscandidosis.
2. “Denturesmustbekeptinacupofwaterovernight”.
Traditionallythishasbeenrecommended.Howevercurrentstudieshaveshownleavingyourdenturetodryovernightismuchmoreeffectiveinreducingplaquere-accumulationandyeastcolonization,evencomparedwithdenturecleansers.(Butbeawarethattheremaybeariskofwarpage.)Besuretoputitinasafeplacethough,especiallyifyouhavepets!
3. “Iusetoothpastetocleanmydentures”.Theproblemwithusingtoothpasteisthattheabrasivecomponentsscratchthesurfaceofyourdenturesandalloweasydevelopmentofbacterialbiofilm.Insteadoftoothpaste,justuseregularsoapandmechanicalcleaningwithyourtoothbrushatleasttwiceaday.Thisisthemosteffectivewaytoremovethebiofilm.
4. “Ionlybrushmydentures”.Ideally,dailymechanicalcleaningshouldbesupplementedwithtwiceweeklysoakingofdenturesinanappropriateantimicrobialcleaningsolution.Therearenumerousbrandsthatcanbefoundinthechemistorsupermarket(followmanufacturer’sinstructions).Otherwiseyoucanusewhitevinegar(dilutedwwaterinratioof1:20)andsoakfor15-30minutres.

I was born in Bendigo and started working here at Kennington Dental in the end of 2014, after completing my VCE exams at Bendigo Senior Secondary College. Growing up, I always had an interest in dentistry so it was exciting for me to start a dental assisting traineeship, and even more exciting to have qualified in December of 2015. My goal for the next few years is to work towards heading overseas and experiencing as much as I can, then coming back home to further my education in the health field. For now though, I love spending my time surrounded by my family and friends. I can remember before I finished my senior years of schooling; I was worried that once I started full time work I would be dragging myself through the week to get to the weekend. But the respect and support (and some pranks) everyone has for each other does not go unnoticed. Spending five days a week with my Kennington Dental family is an absolute pleasure.
