A drifter and mentally-ill man described as a "gentle soul",
Kelly Thomas, 37, was brutally beaten and tasered to
death on July 5, 2011, by up to six Fullerton, California
police officers. His tortured screams of ―Oh God!, ―Oh God!‖, and ―I‘m
sorry!‖, can be heard along with the noise of the tasers
used repeatedly on him, in a video captured by a witness.
Kelly was then heard to say he couldn‘t breath, and his
very last words were for his father, as he cried "Dad!",
"Dad!", "Dad!". Then his voice was silenced forever. Yet the
vicious attack by police officer‘s continued.
Witnesses at the scene also heard officer's yell repeatedly
for Kelly to "Stop resisting!", but they said not only was
Kelly NOT resisting, for much of the beating, tasering,
knee drops and head bashing, he was UNCONSCIOUS
ON THE GROUND.
Medical reports from UC Irvine Hospital detail each and
every deadly blow; which bones in his face were broken,
his broken ribs, the bleeding deep inside his brain, and
the deep tissue wounds from the four taser contacts
made by two separate tasers to his chest and flank.
Medical records show that Kelly couldn‘t breath on his
own. He had to be intubated when he CHOKED ON THE
BLOOD that filled his lungs from his crushed and broken
nasal cavity.
Kelly was taken off life support July 10th, 2011. The hos-
pital reports cause of death as: “Brain damage
caused by blunt head trauma, due to assault.”

―I have a very distinct memory of Kelly going back to early summer of 92' - A
group of us had decided to meet at the beach (most of us were likely ditching
school) and at some point during the afternoon Kelly was being cooked by the
sun. Being the true ginger that he was, his skin was literally turning purple...and
had to cover himself in the most ridiculous fashion with a hat, shirts, and tow-
els (wish I had a picture). So naturally, us being the mature young men we
were, gave him a healthy ration of ball busting for this. Now you would think
this would make most kids feel a bit embarrassed, but Kelly being Kelly just
stood up and did this goofy little jig and started singing the Purple People Eater
song. And as usual, deflected all negativity and turned it into a moment of
laughter... For weeks now, this song and several others for that matter have
been stuck in my head with a crystal clear image of one of the most genuinelycaring people I've had the honor of calling my friend. Whatever legacy this
cause may afix to his name, to me he will always just be Kelly (sometimes
affectionately called Smelly - inside joke) RIP my friend. Our paths will cross

Kelly Thomas was an outgoing child who loved to play the guitar,participated in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and aspired to be a wildland firefighter, said his father Ron, who raised him alone after he and
Thomas' mother divorced.
After Kelly‘s diagnosis of schizophrenia in his early 20‘s, he went to a
live-in facility that provided meals and monitored his medication, hisfather said. Thomas was able to hold down a job at a gas station and aprinting facility and even started to train with the Ca. Department of
Forestry and Protection.
But each time he began to improve, he stopped his medications andwound up back on the streets, moving between Yorba Linda, Placentia,Fullerton and Cypress – all places where he had once lived or had
family and friends.
“One of the hardest parts of his death has been
hearing their son described as homeless”
"That's the heartbreaking part for all of us. We all have ideas of whatwe'd like our kids to be like and to do in life. With Kelly, we didn't get torealize that and it constantly broke our heart," his father said. "Kellywasn't homeless at all, he had so many homes, but he wanted to be a
drifter and he did."
―My daughter and I have talked for years that we'd get the call that
something had happened to him, whether it was from organ failurebecause he's not drinking enough fluids or the elements or maybe gang
activity," said his father, Ron Thomas.
Kelly Thomas was taken off life support five days after the vicious beat-ing. His father had initially thought a gang was responsible for Kelly‘s
beating. He was stunned to learn six policeofficers caused his son's severe head and neck
injuries.
But Ron was correct. A vicious gang of six,wearing police uniforms, were responsible for
his sons death.

Bruce Praet (Fullerton City Attorney): Made a ―settlement‖ offer to Ron Thomas for
$900,000— just a few weeks after Kelly‘s death, then he threatened to denigrate the
reputation of Kelly and his family it was not accepted immediately. Also told Ron that his
son‘s life wasn‘t worth a larger settlement because, ―He was not a rocket scientist.‖
Joe Felz (Fullerton City Manager): Denies a settlement offer was ever made. When Mr.
Thomas presented written proof, Felz backtracked and called the offer an ―unofficial‖
proposal.
Chief Michael Sellers (Fullerton PD): Abdicating his responsibilities, Sellers leaves for
two week vacation almost immediately after Kelly‘s brutal beating. According to the DA,
Sellers said he notified the their office two HOURS after officer-involved incident.. DA
Rackauckas states his office wasn‘t notified until two DAYS after incident. Two full days.Did the cops turn in their bloodied uniforms for analysis? Did they turn over their tasers
for forensic examination? Was the homicide scene secured for examination?
Aug 11, Sellers was placed by his doctor on ―medical leave‖, where he is drawing over
$228,000 in pay and benefits. Possibly of note? The ACLU sued the city of Laguna Beach
for their homeless treatment while Sellers was Chief of Police there.
DA’s Office assigns Stan Berry as lead investigator in the case… who was an investiga-
tor for Sellers when he was Chief of Police in Seal Beach. They are said to be close
personal friends, even sharing family vacations.
Acting Chief Hamilton (Fullerton PD): Admits the officer‘s involved in Kelly‘s beating
viewed the city video in crafting their incident reports. Rumored that their initial reports
didn‘t match up with the video, so ―higher ups‖ ordered them to be rewritten, and rewrit-
ten some more, until they did. This is the same surveillance video the DA‘s office refuses
to release to Kelly‘s family or the public because it might ―taint‖ witness testimonies!
Sergeant Andrew Goodrich (Fullerton PD Spokesperson): Many initial press releasesabout Kelly‘s death, made by Sgt. Goodrich, have been recanted, challenged, and proven
incorrect, including: the ‗broken-bones‘ statement of officer injuries, later said to be
―deep tissue‖ wounds—i.e., bruises; Kelly had stolen property on him… later proven to bepapers taken out of an attorney‘s trash (as attested to by said attorney).
Anthony Joseph "Tony" Rackauckas, Jr. (Fourth term as OC DA): In all his years as DA,he has never brought an excessive-force suit against a police officer, nor has he broughtcharges against any officers in over 50 officer-involved deaths. Many law enforcementagencies supported his election campaigns, including the Fullerton Police Officers Asso-ciation. Additional supporters are former mayor and current councilman Don Bankhead,
as well as current mayor and former councilman Dick Jones.
Mayor Dick Jones (Retired Doctor): ―I‘ve seen worse injuries in Vietnam.‖ Mayor Jones,
what injury is worse than death? And in reply to a council meeting, where a residentstated that the meeting had been educational: ―Educational‖, Jones replied, ―or torture?‖
Jones was once heard to say, ―You don‘t get anywhere in Fullerton badmouthing the
Fullerton Police Department.‖
City Councilman Pat McKinley: Former 17-year Fullerton police officer and Chief says,
―Eyewitness accounts are ―flamboyant‖ because it‘s impossible for six men to beat one
man simultaneously.‖ And, ―Facial injuries don‘t result in death ...I‘ve had my eyes
bloused a few times myself and facial injuries are not life threatening.‖ This from the man
who hired the six officer‘s involved in Kelly‘s death, hence the nickname ―The McKinley
Six‖.
City Councilman Don Bankhead: Former long-time Fullerton police officer, former
Fullerton Mayor, and City Councilman since 1988, Bankhead has been silent about
Kelly‘s death. He seems to be taking the Kelly Thomas incident very lightly, and has never
reached out to the Thomas Family to express his condolences.
OC Supervisor Shawn Nelson and Fullerton City Councilman Bruce Whitaker have both
demanded a thorough investigation into police conduct. "We can't ignore what hap-
pened," said Nelson, who contacted U.S. Department of Justice officials. The FBI has
launched it‘s own investigation into Kelly‘s death. Also, Councilman Whitaker claims he
was told that Chief Sellers and others were ―just waiting for the public to calm down
over Thomas' death‖: Hunker down, wait for the passions to subside and basically
with no new information being released it's going to be, it will just subside.
On Aug. 3rd, Councilwoman Sharon Quirk-Silva called on the City Mgr. Felz to seek the
resignation of Chief Sellers. She also asked for the city surveillance video be made public.
To date, Sellers has not resigned, and the video has not be released.

Who Are the Fullerton Six?
The names of the police officers involved directly with Kelly‘s deathhave not been publicly released, but after three weeks, amid publicoutcry, they were reportedly taken off street patrol and assigned―other‖ duties. After further protest, all six were then placed on paid
administrative leave… one month after their deadly att ack on Kelly.
According to Orange County DA Tony Rackauckas, two months into theirinvestigation, his office has interviewed 151 witnesses... EXCEPT for
the McKinley 6. Not one of the officers involved in Kelly‘s death hasgiven a statement about the night Kelly was brutally attacked and left
brain dead.
WHY HAVEN’T THEY BEEN INTERVIEWED YET?
Better yet —WHY HAVEN’T THEY BEEN ARRESTED???
