on the call...the pre and postgame shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who is joined by Royals’ Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery.

TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Julio Teheran (0-3, 3.48) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (3-3, 3.89)

ROUGH TRIP TO THE BRONX--The dimensions of Yankee Stadium will never be confused with those of Kauffman Stadium and last night KC starter Ian Kennedy found out how little margin for error there was in the Bronx, dropping a 7-3 decision...the Yanks hit a trio of home runs, including an opposite field two-run shot just inside the fair pole over the 318 sign in left...meanwhile, the Royals didn’t take advantage of the situation, with Alex Gordon hitting Kansas City’s lone blast, which would’ve departed any park in the Majors, his fourth of the season and second of the New York visit...Gordo, Eric Hosmer and Christian Colon each had two hits in last night’s loss...Kennedy finished with 6.1 innings and seven earned runs on just five hits, with three walks and six K’s...the seven earnies were the most he’s allowed as a Royal and most since last September 12 in San Francisco...the loss closed the books on Kansas City’s

second straight losing road trip, going 2-5 through Cleveland and New York and returning to two games below the .500 mark...the Royals enter this six-game stand 6 1/2 games behind the frontrunning White Sox, who KC will play in Chicago next week when the next road swing begins.

A TRISKADEKAPHOBIAN FRIDAY--Tonight marks Kansas City’s first Friday the 13th contest since June, 13, 2014, when the Royals were 7-2 winners over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field to snap a four-game Friday the 13th slide...over the years, KC has gone 17-24 when this superstitious has popped up on the calendar...the Royals have had 12 non triskadekaphobics wear the #13, with current starting catcher Salvador Perez donning that jersey now.

REMINDER OF MONDAY’S START TIME--This is just a friendly reminder that Monday’s scheduled start time is 6:08 p.m. for the game against the Boston Red Sox to accommodate ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball...Dave Flemming, Dallas Braden and Eduardo Perez will call the action...Monday’s tilt will also be on FOX Sports Kansas City, with the pre-game show, Hy-Vee Royals Live, scheduled for 5:30.

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS--This three-game series with Atlanta that is full of promotions for fans starting with the first post-game fireworks show of the year after tonight’s game...tomorrow’s 6:15 contest is Ned Yost Bobblehead – The first of the 2015 World Series Commemorative Bobblehead Series, with the first 20,000 fans receiving the item...Sunday’s series finale will also be the annual Salute to the Negro Leagues as the Royals and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum pay tribute to Kansas City’s rich baseball tradition with this annual salute...both teams will wear replica Negro Leagues uniforms that fans can bid on after the game at royals.com/NLBM or mlb.com/auction...Kansas City will wear cream uniforms with navy blue trim, Monarchs block lettering on the front and a KC patch on the left sleeve, while the Braves will wear road gray uniforms with red and navy trim and Atlanta block lettering on the front...the first 10,000 fans on Sunday will receive a Monarchs Fedora

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY--On the heels of a 2-5 road trip, the Royals are now two games below .500...prior to this stretch, Kansas City had not been two below .500 since July 21, 2014 at 48-50, but that club rectified the situation by reeling off five consecutive wins and 23 out of 29 to climb back into the race and eventually land a spot in the A.L. Wild Card game...the biggest issue has been KC’s play on the road, going 7-13 to this point, but just 3-12 in the last 15 away games after a 4-1 road start...entering 2016, Kansas City was the best away team in the Majors from 2013-15, posting a 133-110 ledger, two more wins than the Dodgers (131-112).

Royals vs. Braves Atlanta comes to Kansas City for just the second time since the advent of interleague play in 1997, the first time for a three-game series...the Braves’ only previous stop here was a split of a two-game set in 2013, while KC also shared a pair in Atlanta that season...the Royals are 4-6 all-time vs. the Braves.Date Site Score WP LP Att.5/13 KC5/14 KC5/15 KC

EDINSON VOLQUEZ takes the hill for his team-leading eighth start of the season, the 226th assignment of his career and 233rd appearance...a long-time National Leaguer, Volky makes his eighth career start against Atlanta...the 32-year-old righty is in the second year of a two-year deal that includes a mutual option for 2017. EARLY EXIT ON MOTHER’S DAY--Edinson had his shortest start of the season last Sunday in Cleveland, working just 4.1 innings in a 5-4 setback to the Tribe...he was charged with five runs on seven hits with four walks and four K’s...he was able to limit the damage to a pair of solo home runs over the first four innings, before running into trouble in the fifth...leading 3-2 entering the fifth, Volky surrendered consecutive hits and a walk to open the frame and then allowed a game-tying RBI single to Lonnie Chisenhall to finish his afternoon after 105 pitches...it marked his shortest start since going 3.0 innings vs. Detroit last September 3, a game KC rallied to win 15-7...the loss was Edinson’s third-straight marking the first time he’s dropped three consecutive starts since April 22-May 4, 2014 with Pittsburgh...he finished that season winning 12 of his final 14 decisions. FIRST INNING CRITICAL--Getting off to a good start has been a crucial for Edinson this season...in his first four starts, he allowed no runs on two hits with no walks in the first inning, helping him start the year 3-0...during the current three game slide, he’s allowed three first-inning tallies on five hits with two walks...this trend is a continuation from last season, when he posted a 0.69 ERA (1 ER in 13.0) and a .167 opponents average in the opening frame of his 13 wins, while opponents hit .286 against him (10-for-35) and scored five first-inning runs (four earned) in his nine losses. VS. ATLANTA--Edinson takes on the Braves for the first time since 2014 and eighth of his career...he’s 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA (14 ER in 39.2 IP) in his previous starts vs. Atlanta, winning his last two decisions and three of his last four...most recently, he earned a 10-1 triumph on September 25, 2014, when he tossed 7.0 scoreless frames at Turner Field...since the start of 2013, Volky has gone 9-3 with a 2.60 ERA in 15 regular season starts vs. N.L. East foes. INTERLEAGUE SUCCESS--Since coming to Kansas City prior to 2015, Volquez has been very good against his former league...the righty has gone 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA (11 ER in 44.0 IP) and a .231 opponents average in seven Interleague starts, with the Royals going 6-1 in those outings...he’s 1-1 against the N.L. this year. HOME SWEET HOME--Volky toes the rubber at ‘The K’ for his fifth home start of the year, entering at 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA (4 ER in 26.1 IP), compared to a 1-2 mark and an 8.22 ERA on the road...he’s enjoyed success at home over the last two-plus seasons, going 18-10 with a 3.04 ERA in 38 home outings, which includes 2014 in Pittsburgh...his 18 home victories in that span are tied for seventh in the Majors with Madison Bumgarner, Chris Sale and Max Scherzer, among others...in 118 career home outings, Edinson is 44-36 with a 3.96 ERA and held the opposition to a .238 batting average.

This & ThatRoyals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ New York Yankees - Thursday, May 12, 2016

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE--The Royals are 9-5 in Kauffman Stadium in 2016...dating back to last October, Kansas City has won 16 of its last 21 games contested in “The K”...the Royals are coming off a 51-30 home mark last season, the third best home win total in the American League...last year’s total matched the 1975 Royals for fifth most at home in team history...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is tied with Cleveland and the Angels for the third most home wins in the American League with 146, trailing only the Orioles (157) and Blue Jays (148).

BACK TO INTERLEAGUE ACTION--Tonight marks a weekend return to Interleague play for the Royals, who have gone 2-3 to this point, splitting a two-game season-opening series here with the Mets and then dropping two of three to the Nationals during KC’s last abbreviated homestand...since the start of 2014, Kansas City has compiled the best Interleague record in the Majors at 30-15, two wins better than runner-up Toronto in that span at 28-18...after this series with the Braves, Kansas City still has a four-game home & home with the St. Louis Cardinals (June 27-30), a two-game visit to Citi Field with the Mets (June 21-22), a three-game series in Philadelphia (July 1-3) and a three-game visit to Miami against the Fish (August 23-25)

ROTATION SWITCH--Kansas City has altered its rotation for this tomorrow and Sunday against these Braves, with Dillon Gee scheduled to make his first start as a Royal after seven relief appearances tomorrow night and then Danny Duffy returning to a starter’s role to take the ball on Sunday...Gee, a 30-year old righthander signed by the Royals in the off-season after a six-year career with the Mets, where he worked 114 times, 110 as a starter, posting a 40-37 record...Gee last worked in Yankee Stadium on Monday night, tossing 5.1 innings of three-hit, one-run relief in KC’s loss...he is taking the spot of Chris Young, who has gone on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain...Duffy, who has made 108 big league appearances, 80 as a starter, will be on a pitch limit Sunday since he’s not stretched out as he takes the spot of Kris Medlen, who was placed on the D.L. with right rotator cuff inflammation.

LOCAIN HEATING UP--A slow starter this year Lorenzo Cain has begun turning his season around, driving in seven runs in the last three games, including a his first career and club record tying three-home run game on Tuesday night...he was hitting .200 after play on April 25, but has since batted .368 (21-for-57) in his last 14 games, featuring seven multi-hit games, upping his season average 76 points to .276 entering tonight.

DAVIS ZEROED IN--Closer Wade Davis has made 12 scoreless appearances to open this year, totaling 11.2 innings with three hits allowed and 12 strikeouts...unfortunately, he has had only one save situation in Kansas City’s last 18 games, securing a Kansas City win in Seattle on May 1, thus he was summoned on Wednesday night with a four-run lead to close the game despite not having a save on the line...he has eight saves in as many tries this year, which despite the recent stretch of rescue inactivity still ranks just three saves behind the American League leaders...Davis, who became the full-time closer after Greg Holland went down with an elbow injury in the second half of 2015, has made good on 25 of his last 26 regular season save situations for a 96.2% success which tops the Majors since the start of the 2015 season, just ahead of the Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen (95.9%)... Davis was also 4-for-4 in last October’s run to the title, tossing 10.2 scoreless innings over the three series.

SALVY CONTROLLING THE RUNNING GAME--Three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner, Salvador Perez has nabbed a Major League tying 10 potential base thieves, a total that was matched last night by Milwaukee’s Jonathan Lucroy..in the last two-plus seasons going back to 2014, Perez has the most runners caught stealing with 57...Salvy is also #1 among all receivers in pickoffs since coming to the Majors with 17.

STRETCH VS. THE EAST--The Royals are 1-3 at the start of this 10-game stretch against a combination of Eastern Division teams, with KC hosting the N.L. East’s Atlanta Braves this weekend and then returning to work against the A.L. East when Boston hits town on Monday...KC is now 3-4 vs. the East on the year with the 1-3 stop in New York coupled with a 2-1 series at home vs. Baltimore in its only other work to this point against the East this year...the Royals were 18-16 vs. the East last year...after the series with the Red Sox concludes on May 18, Kansas City will play 14 of 17 games within the Central Division from May 19-June 5.

RECORD SETTING SKIPPER--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his sixth full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he is currently three games below .500 for the Kansas City portion of his managerial career at 484-487, easily outdistancing Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...his postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a .710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers is games (1,930) and sixth in wins (941)...his 1,930 games skippered rank 61st all-time, surpassing Bill Virdon...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).

THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--Kansas City opened 2016 as the two-time defending American League Champions, a franchise first, defeating the Mets to win the World Series crown last year after going to a Game #7 in the 2014 Fall Classic before succumbing to the San Francisco Giants...Kansas City’s A.L. title in 2015 was the fourth in franchise history, joining the 1980, ‘85 and 2014...the Royals are coming off a 95-67 regular season and their first American League Central championship, winning the division by 12 games...the last division title won by Kansas City was the 1985 A.L. West, when the club parlayed that triumph into its first World Series title...the 95 wins last year were the most by a KC squad since the 1980 Royals went 97-65...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City has a 286-234 record for a .550 winning pct., the best mark in the American League, fourth best in the Majors (behind St. Louis, Pittsburgh and L.A.)...KC has three more total wins in that span than the second best A.L. club Baltimore (283).

THE COMEBACK KIDS--In winning 11 games during the 2015 postseason, the Royals had to come from behind in eight of those victories, including an unprecedented seven comebacks from a multiple-run deficit...KC rallied from a one-run deficit in Game #2 of the World Series against the Mets, while coming back from two runs behind on three other occasions during the Fall Classic, capped by the two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning of the deciding Game #5, sending the game to extra innings with the Royals plating five runs in the 12th to seal the title...Kansas City also rallied from a two-run deficit in the deciding game of the ALDS vs. the Astros to advance to the League Championship Series vs. Toronto...the Royals came from three runs back in Game #2 of both the ALDS vs. Houston and the ALCS vs. the Blue Jays...the biggest comeback of the fall matched the same scenario of the 2014 Wild Card game vs. the A’s, as KC was down by four runs to Houston with six outs to go in game #4 at Minute Maid Park, but plated five in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth to get to a deciding Game #5 in Kauffman Stadium.
