Boyzone To Headline Newton Abbot RacecourseIrish Pop Sensations Boyzone are set to play a headline show on Sunday June 28 at Newton Abbot Racecourse. This will be the first major Pop Concert to be held at the Racecourse and is also one of only a handful of dates that Boyzone will play in 2015 making this night a key one for your calendar. Newton Abbot Racecourse has also recently announced that English singer and television presenter Alesha Dixon will be Boyzone’s Special Guest at their headline show at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Sunday June 28. ‘The Boy Does Nothing’ singer is confirmed to be bringing out a new record in June and her Newton Abbot show will include this single as well as her hits.

Patrick Masterson, Managing Director at Newton Abbot Racecourse, said: “We are very proud that our venue has attracted two major artists such as Boyzone and Alesha Dixon – with the special guest now confirmed we hope this gives people even more reason to book their tickets.”

“This night is a momentous event for Newton Abbot Racecourse and in time it will hopefully enable us to continue to attract large music

artists for future concerts – attracting people from Newton Abbot and beyond.”

Ronan said “We love the chance to play outdoors through the summer so I’m looking forward to a great night in Newton Abbot.”

In November 1993, a bunch of young lads from the North side of Dublin infamously appeared on Ireland’s biggest TV show ‘The Late Late Show’ and the rest, as they say... is history. Twenty one singles, seven albums, four of which were #01’s, twenty five million record sales, hundreds of gigs, millions of memories and twenty two years later, Boyzone are still going strong. A phenomenal start to a musical career, they scored 16 consecutive top five singles including ‘Love Me For A Reason’, ‘Father and Son’ and ‘Picture of You’ and the run included six number ones: ‘Words’, ‘A Different Beat’, ‘All That I Need’, ‘No Matter What’, ‘When The Going Gets Tough’ and ‘You Needed Me’. Boyzone are only performing a handful of shows in 2015 making Newton Abbot a key date for your calendar. They will be performing many of these hits at Newton Abbot in June.

The Hendrix Alive Project, Holland’s No.1 Jimi Hendrix Tribute Band, embark on a UK Southwest Tour in June & July 2015. The Hendrix Alive Project are no strangers to The UK. Back in 2009 they performed their 1st UK Tour but it was the following year that they made their mark on The Southwest by Touring with Torbay Based Pink Floyd Tribute ‘The New Machine’.

They contacted local Drummer and Ex - New Machine Drummer Jamie Darling. Jai is known in the Bay for his powerful drumming performances with Scott Mcgowan, Jagged ants, Crossfire and his own bands with Rockology partner ‘ Rod Scott ‘ & Dangerous Things. Jai also co hosts the weekly Jam Night at The Famous Spinning Wheel on Paignton seafront. Jai and Eelco had remained friends since that Tour of 2009/10. Eelco proceeded to ask Jai if he was available to drum for the UK Part of their European Tour ... and the rest as they say is history! Jai said ‘I am so honoured and excited to

be performing with Eelco and Tony as the Hendrix Alive Project, it has been a lot of hard work organising the gigs etc but I am looking forward to some great gigs with the guys’.

The Hendrix Alive Project last came to the UK 5 years ago and wowed audiences with their musicianship in recreating Jimi Hendrix’s music and the same will ring true in 2015. This is a band you DO NOT want to miss!

HELP US TO GIVE THE Ponies of Dartmoor A FUTURE

The Hill Ponies have been a vital part of the beauty of the Dartmoor landscape for thousands of years, where their grazing keeps the scrub at bay and their presence is enjoyed by many locals and visitors alike. You would not think it likely that there is a species of mammal in the UK that is endangered and unchampioned. But there is. Friends of the Dartmoor Hill Pony is battling to prevent extinction of these ponies.

The little ponies that live wild, on the commons of Dartmoor are perfectly adapted to surviving hard winters at heights of 1500ft and above. Long, shaggy winter coats, thick skin, strong feet and teeth (with which they grind the gorse for food) and an in-built knowledge of where to find water on the moor, even when temperatures drop below freezing. They live in natural herds: wild, no. The herds are owned by Dartmoor’s hill farmers and distantly managed. Anyone who has visited Dartmoor will know the joy of seeing these herds running free on open commons.

Why are they endangered? They are being undervalued, and squeezed from many di- rections. None of these impacts intend to endanger the pony herds, but collectively, they are. Today’s herds of Dartmoor Hill Ponies are probably direct descendents of the pony whose hoof-print was discovered during archaeological excavations on Dartmoor. This makes them contemporary with a Bronze Age hut circle! They are a valued part of our heritage and are worth their weight in gold as a tool of conservation keeping Dartmoor as we know and love it.

Dartmoor is a very diverse area with a great difference in altitude and terrain. So the pony herds have adapted to their area, in times gone by you could tell where you were by the herd of ponies you could see, The Shetland type introduced 300 years ago to work in the

tin mines thrives on the high moor and on the lower less harsh areas you will find a bigger pony, usually bay black or grey.

The Dartmoor Hill Pony, evolved over thousands of years as one of the oldest inhabitants of the Moor, it has had many different bloodlines introduced to meet the requirements as the ponies uses have changed from century to century, polo racing or just getting goods to market.

Friends of the Dartmoor Hill Pony

22

Page 23: June July 2015

The pony which we have today varies in colour and type including skewbald and piebald (who were first noted as living on Dartmoor in Elizabeth I reign, but all have the same underlying tradition of hardiness and good temperament, and which is why they make excellent ponies for children and very good driving ponies.

There used to be around 30,000 ponies running on the commons of Dartmoor, now there are an estimated 1500 ponies left. The resulting gene pool is a treasure, which must never be lost, as no one could ever replicate what has emerged from thousands of years of Dartmoor in all her moods. We have an invaluable source of resilient ponies “true children’s friends,” and the basis of many future competition animals and the perfect tool for looking after Dartmoor. We would be delighted if you would like to become a friend of our voluntary charity dedicated to the job of supporting and promoting these ponies to ensure them a future on the moor and also ensure them a good home when they leave the moor by giving them an identity and therefore a real value.

How monies donated will be used this year.Ongoing homing of the ponies who can no longer stay on the moor, through our dedicated website www.wildtowonderful.org and Facebook page moor to more.

Recognising the ponies value through a promotional campaign and providing a point of contact for anyone who wishes to know about ponies on Dartmoor. The Pony Herders fight to keep quality herds of healthy ponies roaming free, adding to the beauty of Dartmoor and keeping our Heritage alive. Natural England states there is no proof of the value of ponies to the moors, which is reflected by grazing agreements that do not support people who wish to keep their herds of ponies.

Provide the evidence that ponies are a vital part of the biodiversity that Natural England requires to support ponies grazing on Dartmoor. We shall give DEFRA the evidence they should have acquired before they decided to reduce the stocking levels and change the grazing calendars.

The development of a moor-wide pony database. In order to roll-out our toolbox for welfare management to pony herders accurately and efficiently. As the welfare management toolbox take-up increases year-on-year, the database will be needed to capture the necessary facts and records, and identify new target herds.

Improving and running Projects already in place on the the moor, reducing the foal crop through contraception and off the moor subsidising michrochipping passporting and training. To say thank you we will endeavour to update you with our progress via Website www.friendsofthedartmoorhillpony.co.uk, Facebook and newsletter as we work on a long term plan that will secure a viable future for these wonderful animals.

CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL are delighted to unveil The Levellers as their Main Stage Saturday night Headliner. With their own Beautiful Days festival now sold out, this is the only opportunity to see this massively popular folk-punk band perform in the Westcountry this summer.

Chagstock is one of the Westcountry’s best-loved festivals. Set in 70 acres of farmland on the edge of Dartmoor, Chagstock is renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and non-corporate, family friendly atmosphere. Chagstock showcases the very best music, food and entertainment that the Westcountry and the UK have to offer.

Headlining the main stage on Friday are mighty alt-rockers, New Model Army. Their incredible stage presence, combined with a massive back catalogue of classic songs from across their 35-year history, makes them the ideal band to round off the first evening at Chagstock. Also on the Friday main stage line up are Neville Staple Band, whose frontman has been at the vanguard of Ska since joining the Specials back in 1978. BBC Folk Award nominee Martha Tilston, and Irish Music Award winning Celtic Fusion act Roving Crows.

Alongside the Levellers, Saturday’s main stage line up includes Seth Lakeman, house band New Crisis, raucous six-piece electro swing band Electric Swing Circus and female-fronted reggae band Dojo.As introduced in 2012 in recognition of the tough economic climate for families, all children under 12 can attend the festival for free (ticket is required). Chagstock’s capacity is once again capped at just

5,000 tickets to ensure that its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere is maintained.

Simon Ford Chagstock Festival organiser says, “After three consecutive sold-out years the pressure is one again on myself and the team to deliver the best Chagstock ever. With this incredible line-up we have gone a long way to achieving that, but there is still plenty more for us to do…! Keep an eye on the website and facebook for updates, band announcements and all the Chagstock news you need…And of course, as always we are sticking to the non-corporate vibe and family friendly atmosphere with loads of great and varied music, food and entertainment”

Cycle from just £1.50

Page 35: June July 2015

In2012BradleyWigginswontheTour De France and our recent successes at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games have rekindled the nations love of cycling. Bicycles are already gaining in popularity as an environmentally friendly means of transport, providing an escape from the daily queues in the car and of course cycling also helps with fitness.

Torbay Velopark opened in July 2014 and offers cycling seven days a week away from the traffic environment. Serious cyclists share the 1500km track with children taking their first tentative steps towards a lifetime or peddling. It is the only outdoor closed circuit cycling facility in Devon and Cornwall.

The track is open from 9.30am – 5pm everyday and has evening rides during the summer evenings. Prices range from £1.50 for juniors and seniors over 60 and £2 for adults. Don’t worry if you haven’t got your own bike an excellent range is available to hire for just £4. The track is open to the entire family with trailers available to hire for younger children and even trikes for people with less balance.

The track is very cleverly designed to European standards with gradients

no greater than 4% up or down. The track is silky smooth so tyres can be pumped to maximum pressure making progress efficient. So as there are no steep hills there’s no need for puffing and panting, the whole experience can be very sociable.

Spotlight on Local TalentLocal Author, John Hogath, New Book ‘Out of Chaos’

It’s been three years since John Hogarth’s debut novel ‘The Frequency of Murder’ was sitting pretty in the national eBook top 5, alongside E.L James (50 Shades) and Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games). On May 18th he released his latest novel which is, according to him, “A mystery wrapped up in a conspiracy, wrapped up in a mystery.”

‘Out Of Chaos’ centres on a crazed conspiracy theorist who decides to execute a terror campaign around London, attacking prominent symbolic targets, including St.Paul’s Cathedral, and creating fear across the country.

DCI Damien Caunter of New Scotland Yard is thrown into one of the most terrifying and confusing cases of his career. The beady eyes of Westminster and MI5 are watching his every move as he tries to track down a killer.

A reclusive and depressed reporter becomes immersed in a world of conspiracy theories herself. What she discovers could change the course of Damien’s investigation.

Nothing is what it seems. The pressure is on. The Prime Minister wants answers. Who can Damien trust when the lines of reality and conspiracy become blurred?

Out Of Chaos is available for download on Kindle and Kindle apps. View the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8rT6rP_LlE

“MUSIC OF THE NIGHT”Colin Matthews has an established reputation for producing real quality productions every year at the Babbacombe Theatre and on Thursday evenings ‘Music of the Night’ is no exception and is another Winner.

Such a wonderful show with a fabulous cast of seasoned pro’s performing a non-stop quality evening of music, from Pop to Opera to Musicals.

Andy Oakley a favourite at Babbacombe, heads the show, and proves that he is not only a great versatile Comedian, but has a wonderful vocal prowess too.

Keedie, a beautiful International Classical Crossover Singer, with the voice of an angel, and a vocal range that will leave you mesmerised, and wanting more. Keedie has sung all over the World, at many major events, and had a Number 2 chart success with Duncan from Boy Band Blue, with “I believe my Heart“.

Richie Lee, fantastic Vocalist, and Fankie Vali Tribute artiste.

Lee Randall a local home grown star, with a great Robbie Williams Tribute Act, building a super following both locally and nationally.

Eloise Cole and Lisa Walker, both professional entertainers and Vocalists, who not only can sing beautifully, but have built a great following working as a Duo called Chique all over the Country.

Lisa T Winter, a fantastic female vocalist, and a true professional with a wonderful Voice.

Damien James, a very talented young man, with an excellent Range of Vocals and an accomplished Musician.

Last but not least, in my opinion the Star of the show, is the exceptionally talented Lily Laight, who at a very young age has already done, and achieved so much in the world of entertainment. Starring in MATILDA, Les Miserables and more recently the acclaimed film “Love Rosie“. She is a delight to watch as she is a beautiful dancer but also to listen too - a tremendous talent.

The finale of the show was the fantastic song originally by John Mills ‘Music’ and they couldn’t have picked a better song to end a fantastic evening of musical entertainment.

All in all “ Music of the Night “ is a Wonderful Family Show not to be missed.

The New Jersey BoysOH WHAT A NIGHT!

This sensational show which continues to sell out with standing ovations everywhere returns to Paignton by popular demand. The New Jersey Boys take their audience on a nostalgic musical journey through the career of one of the biggest selling groups of all time - The Four Seasons. The packed two set programme includes all the hits such as Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man and much more.

This newly choreographed show, featuring the amazing falsetto voice of Einar Vestman and all round entertainer Gary Gould, is a clever mixture of tight vocal harmonies, superb solo spots and light comedy. All in all, an unmissable evening of top entertainment from four outstanding performers who remind us of a band whose unique sound became a worldwide success.

GOING OVER THE EDGE FOR CHSW!Tank Sherman is abseiling down England’s highest waterfall!

I AM TERRIFIED OF HEIGHTS, but doing this will give the CHSW much needed money for them to carry on their very special work.

So, I will be abseiling down the tallest waterfall in the United Kingdom. The thought of it scares me, but the needs of the children and their families outweighs my desire to stay on the ground and watch others do it!

Thank you for reading, and I hope you will go on to my donation page (link at the bottom of this page).

Please give what you can. Lots of love,

Tank x

Survivors of the Titanic

A Brixham-based non-profit theatre and film company specialising in historical drama, brings the Devon links to the Titanic, to life in a new stage production.

Following a ten-year history of researching, writing and performing historical and period dramas, the South Devon Players theatre & film company from Brixham, in Torbay, south Devon, the Players are now bringing to life one of the most famous sea disasters of all time, with a new stage production, Survivors of the Titanic. This drama follows the stories of various crew members and passengers on board the liner, and how some of the surviving crew, including those with links to Devon and Cornwall, were returned to Plymouth on board the SS Lapland, arriving at Millbay Docks, before travelling on by train to Southampton.

This is but one of the fascinating links between Plymouth, and the Titanic, and we have been lucky enough to receive a great deal of historical research and support from local historian Nigel Voisey who is championing this aspect of Devons history.

Survivors of the Titanic will be performed in Paignton and Brixham, in September 2015, with tickets on sale now for this production. With a beautifully costumed production by a group experienced in performing historical drama, and a huge age range of performers, this show will bring a new adaptation to the stage, and hopefully create wider interest in this little know and under-remembered part of Devons sea heritage.

The South Devon Players Theatre Company are members of both the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and of the Brixham Chamber of Commerce.
