From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas:
REMEMBER THAT JULY IS THE MONTH OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS!
MISSIONARY CO-OP
Fr. Peter Mandina of the Diocese of Machakos in Kenya (Africa) will offer all our Masses this weekend. This is part of the “Missionary Plan of Cooperation”, in which all the parishes of the Archdiocese are com-pelled to take part each year, and it’s a good thing. It gives us a chance both to be informed about the mission-ary activity of the Catholic Church and to help in whatever way we can to support the work of our missionaries. In this case, the Diocese of Machakos is about three times the size of ours, with Catholics numbering over 1.6 million. It’s a diocese of 76 parishes and another 1,000 or so “out-stations”. There is much there that can use our help! I will take the occasion to do a bit of travelling and Fr. Mandina will offer Mass in my absence. Please welcome him and support his work!
AAAAAAAAAAAH!
That’s the sound I heard as people entered (after a month’s absence) our wonderfully air-cooled church. The system seems to be working as flawlessly as ever and is good for another 40 years! Whenever you pass from the Amazon-Jungle-like St. Louis heat and humidity into the congenial climate of our church, remember sweet Audrey Nessing (whose bequest to our parish paid for the repairs) and say a prayer for her dear soul!
UPCOMING EVENTS
- Saturday, August 5: our annual Ice Cream Social on the feast of the Transfiguration, immediately following the 5:00PM Mass (I’ll try to conjure up another interesting anecdote about the founding of Transfiguration Parish!)
- Sunday, August 6: the annual Mass in honor of God the Father at 1:30PM (and an Ice Cream Social to follow, if there’s any left over from the night before!)
- Friday, August 25: an evening of French cuisine to honor the patron saint of the French, St. Louis IX (last week I publicized the menu; it’s going to be authentically French and exceptionally fantastic, and I’ll re-submit it as we draw closer….spread the word!)
- November: Pictures for a new parish photo directory to be taken (the last one was in ’12)
QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC
We have been getting deeper and deeper into St. Matthew’s Gospel his year, and now we reached the point of what the scholars call “The Parabolic Discourse”. All that means is that we are going to hear Jesus’ par-ables for the next several weeks. They should all be familiar to Catholics, all the more so because many of them have been given titles. I’ll describe the parable, and you provide the title it has been given:
1. After squandering his inheritance, the younger of two brothers returns repentant to his father. 2. A man sows good seed in his field and his enemy scatters weeds in it (today’s Gospel). 3. The victim of a mugging, ignored by the religious, is helped by the least likely one of all. 4. A farmer scatters seed, which lands on all different kinds of soil. 5. An aggrieved widow pesters a crooked judge until he finally renders her justice. 6. Jesus likens the Kingdom of God to a very valuable pearl. 7. Jesus contrasts the wisdom of being well-prepared with the foolishness of being unprepared. 8. Jesus chastises the wealthy for their being oblivious to the poverty that surrounds them. 9. Jesus describes Himself as One Who loves His sheep so much that He will die for them. 10. Jesus extols the virtue of being vigilant for His Second Coming.
ANSWERS: 1. “The Prodigal Son” (Lk. 15:11) 2. “The Parable of the Tares” (Mt. 13:24) 3. “The Good Samari-tan” (Lk. 10:30) 4. “The Sower and the Seed” (Mt. 13:3) 5. “The Importunate Widow” (Lk. 18:2) 6. “The Pearl of Great Price” (Mt. 13:45) 7. “The Wise and Foolish Virgins” (Mt. 25:1) 8. “The Rich Man and Lazarus” (Lk. 16:19) 9. “The Good Shep-herd” (Jn. 10:1) 10. “The Watchful Servant” (Lk. 12:35)

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
Thanks to everyone who donated to the July Food Drive. Because the schools are closed for the summer, the families served by TEAM have a greater need. We have seen a large increase in the number of calls we receive for utility assis-tance in the last month so we really appreciate those who continue to contribute through their parish envelope or the brown envelopes in the church foyer. Remember, as your college bound students are going back to campus, to check out the new Thrift Store in Paddock Plaza, for some of those dorm or apartment furnishings.
