From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT AUGUST IS THE MONTH OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT!
THE SIXTH CHAPTER OF JOHN; THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
Continuing the readings from the sixth chapter of John this week, we see how Jesus faces controversy from the incredulous crowds who just can’t see how Jesus can give them His Body and Blood to consume as Bread for eternal Life. I will also continue to speak of the bread and wine of Mass, this time on its title as the “Blessed Sac-rament” (next week will be on “Holy Communion”).
CATECHISM CLASS RESUMES!
For the past four years now, I have been conducting an ongoing study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church for the benefit of any and all who wish to take part in it. It’s a very informal gathering of Catholics (and occasionally a non-Catholic or two), folks who are all believers seeking to know the Lord better. Everybody is welcome and all are invited to take part. As I say, it’s very informal. We talk about whatever people want to talk about and, when the questions cease or the discussion dies down, we go back to the text of the Catechism itself and resume where we left off previously (this usually stirs up further conversation and discussion). All in all, it’s a good evening. It takes place on the first and third Tuesdays of each month (unless otherwise indicated) after the 7:00PM Perpetual Help Devotions in the Parish Meeting Room (located next to my office and accessible through the choir area of church). The 2018-2019 term commences on September 4 (the day after Labor Day). Plan on taking part, if you can. (Please be clear that this is something different from the classes for converts, the RCIA.)
RCIA CLASS OF 2019
Speaking of converts, it’s not too soon to start thinking ahead to this fall and our convert class for next Easter. If you (or anyone you know) is thinking about becoming Catholic, then please let me know about it. This is something that requires a great deal of prayerful consideration. If I can ever answer any questions, I’ll be happy to do so.
QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC
Let’s make this one on local Catholic history:
1. Name the four churches that served as the cathedral of the Diocese (and later Archdiocese) of St. Louis. 2. Name all the former priests from St. Louis who are now bishops of other cities. 3. When was Kenrick Seminary founded? 4. Name the different buildings in which Kenrick Seminary was housed. 5. How many high schools are named for former bishops of St. Louis? 6. Two parishes still operate their own high schools; which are they? 7. Many parishes operated high schools years ago but are now closed; name three of them. 8. Some high schools changed their names. What were these schools formerly called: St. Mary’s, St. Catherine Laboure 9. Name the religious order that founded and/or runs these high schools: De Smet, CBC, St. Joseph Academy, Chaminade, Ursuline Academy 10. 1971-73 was a rough time for Catholic high schools; ten of them closed. See how many you can name.
ANSWERS: 1. The original log cabin cathedral built by Bp. DuBourg (on the grounds of the Old Cathedral), the Old Ca-thedral, St. John the Apostle, (on Plaza Square, downtown, which Abp. Kenrick used as his “pro-cathedral” because he hated the Old Cathedral), and the New cathedral 2. Bp. Stika (Knoxville,TN), Bp. Sheridan (Colorado Springs, CO), Bp. Rice (Springfield-Cape Girardeau, MO), Bp. Braxton (Belleville, IL), Abp. Lucas (Omaha, NE), Abp. Naumann (Kansas City, KS), and Cardinal Dolan (New York, NY) 3. 1893 4. The old Visitation Academy building on 19th & Cass, the building now the “Rigali Center” on Abp. May Dr. , and the current “Kenrick/Glennon” site on Glennon Dr. 5. Three: DuBourg, Rosati-Kain (named for two bishops!), and Cardinal Ritter Prep (there had been a “Kenrick High School” many years ago, but now long closed) 6. Ste. Genevieve (Valle) and St. Vincent’s in Perryville 7. You could name: St. Mark’s, St. Alphonsus, St. John the Baptist (south St. Louis),

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“It is not a disconnected fact…that American women entering the labor force from 1973 to 2009 added three-and-a-half trillion dollars to the economy. Right? The net, new entrance of women – that is not disconnected from the fact that (Roe v. Wade) be-came the law of the land in January of 1973.” – Chel-sea Clinton, obviously opining that the 60,000,000 babies murdered in this land since 1973 would have all wound up on welfare, siphoning vast amounts of money out of the economy, or else would have pre-vented all these women from entering the workplace. This, of course begs that question: wouldn’t those 60,000,000 murdered Americans have entered the work force and produced $3,500,000,000,000 in gross domestic product, too, in addition to those women who survived the womb and did enter the work force, thus further enriching America?

Features: GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activi-ties, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local busi-nesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
