From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT JANUARY IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY CHILDHOOD OF JESUS!

EPIPHANY

The traditional last day of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” is the great feast which we celebrate today, namely, the Epiphany of the Lord (but, then, Epiphany traditionally used to occur on the same day every year, January 6!). Just as Advent was extraordinarily short last year (its entire fourth week lasting only about half an hour), so the Christmas season is unusually short this year. In most years, this coming week would have been the last week of Christmas, culminating with the feast of the Lords Baptism next Sunday and with it the beginning of Ordinary Time. This year is different; tomorrow (Monday) will be the feast of the Lord’s Baptism so that next Sunday will be the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (go figure!). Let’s enjoy the blessed feast of the Magi today and, like them, bring to God our very best gifts!

HE’S COMING!

As I mentioned at Mass last weekend, we have invited Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of St. Louis, Robert Her-mann, to visit our parish as part of our Lenten Lecture Series this year. We just found out that he has graciously accepted our invitation! He is, as I also indicated, the designated exorcist of the Archdiocese and will speak to us on that topic, as part of the larger topic of spiritual warfare. Furthermore, he is eager to visit us and speak on that subject and answer any questions you may have. The date has not been set, but you will receive plenty of ad-vance notice. Stay tuned (and see the note below in the “upcoming events”)…

FEAST OF ST. ANGELA, ITALIAN FOOD NIGHT

Continuing our Patron Saints Ethnic Food Night, we will honor our parish patroness, St. Angela Merici, on her feast day (January 27) by serving delicious Italian fare prepared by maestro della cucina, Signore Donald Krause. Here’s the menu for that night: Italian Salad, Chicken Marsala, Toasted Ravioli with Marinara Sauce, Mostaccioli with Meatballs, Bow Tie Pasta Alfredo with Broccoli & Sun Dried Tomatoes, Rigatoni al Carbonara and Italian Roasted Veggies & Parmesan Cheese Rolls, with Tiramisu, Cannoli, and Gelato for dessert. To en-hance your dining experience, we will also serve beer and our own St. Angela Merici wine, made from the grapes harvested from our own St. Angela Parish vineyard! (Extra bottles will be available for purchase for wine connois-seurs to take home!) January 27 is a Saturday, so the meal commences after the 5:00PM Mass in the Buckley/Montine Center (the gym) and will continue until 8:00PM. Please note that rigatoni carbonara is on the menu. (I am quick to point out that this is the authentic carbonara as served in Italy, and not the cream sauce that is served in St. Louis and called carbonara. The St. Louis version is okay; the real thing is beyond delicious!)

QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

This one will be on “brother acts”; see how many of these famous Catholic brothers you can identify:

1. Name the two sets of brothers in the Twelve Apostles that we know for sure. 2. There were two other Apostles who could be brothers, but we’re not sure; who are they? 3. Name the twin brothers who are saints and were physicians who never charged a fee. 4. What is the religious community who founded and operate a hospital in So. St. Louis? 5. Name the order, founded by St. John B. de la Salle, that operates Catholic schools. 6. Another set of twin brothers was martyred in 285AD under Diocletian. Name them. 7. Name the doctor of the Church whose grandmother, parents, and several of his brothers and sisters are all canonized saints. 8. Name the two brothers who are recognized as the apostles to the Slavic peoples (9th c.) 9. The all-time record for most saintly broth-ers is 7; name them. 10. The great St. Dominic had a brother who has been beatified; name him. ANSWERS: 1. Peter & Andrew, James & John 2. Matthew and James the Less (they both had a father named Alphaeus, but we don’t know whether it was the same Alphaeus for both; if so, then they were at least half brothers); it’s possible that St. Jude was also their brother, and other legends maintain that Ss. Simon and Jude were brothers 3. Ss. Cosmas and Dami-an 4. The Alexian Brothers 5. The Christian Brothers 6. Ss. Crispin and Crispian 7. St. Basil the Great 8. Ss. Cryil and Methodius 9. Ss. Orentius, Heros, Pharnacius, Firminus, Cyri-acus,Firmus, & Longinus (all martyrs under Maximian (c. 304AD) 10. Bl. Mannes QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Christianity is a condition of complete sim-plicity, costing not less than everything.” – T. S. Eliot “Unbelievers have made it their never-ending task to explain Jesus away. Some have even suggested that He never existed at all! That degree of unbelief is itself unbelievable. Such daft doubts remind us that atheism is the extreme form of wishful thinking. But there will be no wishful thinking in hell, where all comforting fantasies end forever.” – Joseph Sobran

ROSES FOR LIFE WEEKEND The weekend of Jan. 6/7, please find in your pew some small silk Roses for Life. Our Knights of Co-lumbus have generously donated these roses to be used as a means of communicating from us, the parishioners of St. Angela Merici Parish, to Representative Lacy Clay and Senator Claire McCaskill, that we be-lieve every human life deserves legal protection. Please sign a rose and drop it in a basket on your way out of church. If you wish to reach both leg-islators with your message, please sign two roses and then twist the stems together. Some of our parishioners will be in the lobby to collect them and will then carry them in the 45th Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Following the March our roses will be delivered to the of-fices of Representative Lacy Clay and Senator Claire McCaskill. May God bless you and please keep our pilgrims in your prayers!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY We want to wish all the parishioners at St. Angela a Blessed, Happy & Healthy New Year. We want to thank everyone who has supported this min-istry by their offerings in the parish envelopes & by donations to the Food Drives in 2017. You are a sign of God’s love to those who are in need. Our next Food Drive will be Jan. 20/21.

MARCH WITH US!! The St. Angela Merici March for Life Pil-grims cordially invite you to “virtually” join us in our effort to stand up for the dignity and

sanctity of every human life……specifically, all unborn babies. Enjoy with us a delectable breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 14th, in the lunchroom after all Masses. You may not be able to be physically in Washing-ton,D.C. with us, but your presence with us for this meal will demonstrate your “virtual” pres-ence with us as we walk and pray peacefully down Constitution Ave. with approximately 300,000 fellow citizens from across the nation as well as fellow human beings from across the globe! We are inviting you to join us and support us with a suggested donation of $10 per adult or $25 per family. Visit with veteran Marchers and those anticipating their first journey. Thank you so much and hope to see you on the 14th.

INVITATION TO PRAY WITH US For many years, our parishioners attend-ing the March for Life in DC have used the Novena Prayer in anticipation of their participation in the March. We invite you to pray with us by reciting this prayer once a day beginning on Jan. 11 and ending on Jan. 19 (the day of the March). The prayer can be picked up in the back of church in the vesti-bule. St. Angela Merici parish has been so wonderful-ly supportive of our efforts on behalf of the un-born and we will pray for you as we travel to represent our parish in DC.

REMINDER: Don’t forget that the next movie night is January 19th at 7PM in the lunchroom. It is about two saints:

St. Catherine of Siena and St. Thomas Aquinas.
