Plans are for the plant to be inoperation by September 1982, to process the 1982 canolacrop. DREE has granted CSP Foods an incentive of$2,579,000 to assist in developing the Harrowby plant. Asmany as 3,000 growers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba willcontract to supply"'" 180,000 tonnes (360,000 acres) ofcanola, and provision is made for future development ofsunflower seed crushing.... T.G. Bright & Co. Ltd. ofOntario will install over $3 million in winery equipment in anew 45,000 sq. ft. facility being constructed for InkameepVineyards of Oliver, British Columbia. Both Inkameep andT.G. Bright plan to develop new brands of wine for sale inBritish Columbia utilizing B.C. grapes and blends of B.C.and other available grapes.... Intercontinental Packers,Saskatchewan, has been involved in research with MAP(Modified Atmospheric Packaging). Bulk wieners are nowbeing packaged with MAP (C02 introduction and vacuum

packaging). They have found shelf life is extended and thecolour improved. Research is now being conducted withsmokies and fresh meat with the MAP system.... JohnSpencer of Aberthau Farms in Rosedale is a B.C. processorspecializing in cultivating and harvesting hazelnuts. He hasdesigned a system whereby a helicopter is used to blow thenuts off the branches. A mechanical sweeper on the groundblows the nuts into a wind row, and another unit separates thechaff. ... B.C. increases aid to food producers. J. Hewitt,Minister of Agriculture and Food, says he has the authorityto assist the food processing industry financially in imple­menting new technology. Five major regional administrativeoffices will be set up in the province, expanding marketresearch and analysis services.... Pioneer Portion Pak hasrelocated to Richmond, s.c., doubling their space to 18,000sq. ft. and increasing capacity. They are expanding theirfrozen apple line and adding a new juice line. A new retailpack of fresh fruit salad will be on the market soon. The highquality product with extended shelf/tfe under refrigeration isattributed to their unique packaging process in which theclear nylon poly type bag is nitrogen flushed beforesealing.... Rogers Wholesome Foods, Armstrong, B.C.,completed a new mill in September 1980, which has tripledtheir capacity, enabling them to produce bakery andinstitutional flour. ... The Alberta Department of Agricul­ture has announced the official start of planning for a $7.7million Food Processing Development Centre to be locatedin Leduc, Alberta. The Centre will be a unique addition tothe food processing community of Alberta and WesternCanada. The Centre will house equipment and facilitiesdesigned to assist the food processing industry, develop newproducts, improve and expand existing product lines,develop new and improved packaging techniques, and adaptand modify food processing engineering and technology. It isanticipated the proposed 20,000 sq. ft. facility will becompleted by the summer of 1983.New Chairman at Laval

Dr. Jacques Goulet has been appointed Chairman of theDepartment of Food Science at Laval University. Jacquesreplaces Professor Jean Paul J ulien, whq served as chairmanfor the last nine years.

Dr. Goulet obtained his B.Sc.A. (vivres) at Laval in 1970before going to McGill for a Ph.D. in agricultural micro­biology. He has been with the Department of Food Sciencesince 1974, where his main areas of interest have been foodmicrobiology and dairy technology.

The Ins'titute recognizes the excellence of his endeavoursas past chairman of the Awards Committee and wishes himthe best of luck during his tenure as chairman.
