Industry in Brief Labatt Brewing Company Limited, Saskatchewan, re- cently began brewing and marketing Budweiser beer (under license from Anheuser-Busch Inc., U.S.A.). Beechwood aging (along with a different brewing technique) gives Budweiser a distinctive taste.... CSP Foods announced in October that construction of a new 600 tonne/ day oil seed crushing plant at Harrowby (Saskatchewan-Manitoba bor- der) will begin in April 1981. Plans are for the plant to be in operation by September 1982, to process the 1982 canola crop. DREE has granted CSP Foods an incentive of $2,579,000 to assist in developing the Harrowby plant. As many as 3,000 growers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba will contract to supply"'" 180,000 tonnes (360,000 acres) of canola, and provision is made for future development of sunflower seed crushing.... T.G. Bright & Co. Ltd. of Ontario will install over $3 million in winery equipment in a new 45,000 sq. ft. facility being constructed for Inkameep Vineyards of Oliver, British Columbia. Both Inkameep and T.G. Bright plan to develop new brands of wine for sale in British Columbia utilizing B.C. grapes and blends of B.C. and other available grapes .... Intercontinental Packers, Saskatchewan, has been involved in research with MAP (Modified Atmospheric Packaging). Bulk wieners are now being packaged with MAP (C0 2 introduction and vacuum packaging). They have found shelf life is extended and the colour improved. Research is now being conducted with smokies and fresh meat with the MAP system .... John Spencer of Aberthau Farms in Rosedale is a B.C. processor specializing in cultivating and harvesting hazelnuts. He has designed a system whereby a helicopter is used to blow the nuts off the branches. A mechanical sweeper on the ground blows the nuts into a wind row, and another unit separates the chaff. ... B.C. increases aid to food producers. J. Hewitt, Minister of Agriculture and Food, says he has the authority to assist the food processing industry financially in imple- menting new technology. Five major regional administrative offices will be set up in the province, expanding market research and analysis services .... Pioneer Portion Pak has relocated to Richmond, s.c., doubling their space to 18,000 sq. ft. and increasing capacity. They are expanding their frozen apple line and adding a new juice line. A new retail pack of fresh fruit salad will be on the market soon. The high quality product with extended shelf/tfe under refrigeration is attributed to their unique packaging process in which the clear nylon poly type bag is nitrogen flushed before sealing.... Rogers Wholesome Foods, Armstrong, B.C., completed a new mill in September 1980, which has tripled their capacity, enabling them to produce bakery and institutional flour. ... The Alberta Department of Agricul- ture has announced the official start of planning for a $7.7 million Food Processing Development Centre to be located in Leduc, Alberta. The Centre will be a unique addition to the food processing community of Alberta and Western Canada. The Centre will house equipment and facilities designed to assist the food processing industry, develop new products, improve and expand existing product lines, develop new and improved packaging techniques, and adapt and modify food processing engineering and technology. It is anticipated the proposed 20,000 sq. ft. facility will be completed by the summer of 1983. New Chairman at Laval Dr. Jacques Goulet has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Food Science at Laval University. Jacques replaces Professor Jean Paul J ulien, whq served as chairman for the last nine years. Dr. Goulet obtained his B.Sc.A. (vivres) at Laval in 1970 before going to McGill for a Ph.D. in agricultural micro- biology. He has been with the Department of Food Science since 1974, where his main areas of interest have been food microbiology and dairy technology. The Ins'titute recognizes the excellence of his endeavours as past chairman of the Awards Committee and wishes him the best of luck during his tenure as chairman.
