Parts of My Tooth
Dental Teeth are used to cut, chew, chop and crush up food into small pieces to be swallowed. The first set of teeth you get as a child, are called the milk teeth. These 20 teeth are only temporary teeth. At the age of 6 or 7, they will start to fall out and your second set, or permanent teeth will grow. A full set of adult teeth numbers 32, four of these are called your wisdom teeth which usually grow at the back of your mouth between the ages of 17 and 25. That is 12 more than your milk teeth, which means your jaw needs to grow to fit them in. Once you have your permanent set of teeth, no more teeth will grow, unlike some animals such as rabbits, whose front teeth continue growing all their lives. Rabbits gnaw on foods like carrots. When they do this, their two upper front teeth scrape against the two lower ones. This constant scraping wears the teeth down, stopping them from growing too big.

There are three types of teeth that have very different jobs. 1. Incisors – These are situated at the front of your
mouth. They cut food as you bite it.
2. Canines – These are the long, pointed, fang like
teeth at the front of your mouth. They hold onto and tear apart tough food like meat.
3. Premolars and Molars – These are at the sides
and back of your mouth. They grind food to make it easier to swallow.

Parts of a Tooth Crown – This is the part of the tooth that you can see. It is covered with enamel which is very hard and often shiny. Enamel – This protects the inside parts of the tooth. Dentin – This makes up the largest part of the tooth. It is also hard, but not as hard as enamel. Dentin protects the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth. Pulp – The pulp is where the tooth’s nerve endings and the blood supply are found. When you eat hot soup or get a cavity, it is your pulp that hurts. The nerve endings in the pulp send messages to your brain, telling it what is going on. The pulp goes all the way to the root of the tooth, under the gum. Root – The root of the tooth is the part that is buried under the gum, the part that you can’t see. They sit in special cavities called tooth sockets or alveoli. Cementum anchors the roots into place and stops it from moving.

Teeth To look after your teeth and keep them healthy, there are a few things that you need to do: • avoid sugary food and drinks • use dental floss after each meal to remove bits of food that get
stuck between your teeth • brush your teeth at least twice a day • eat dairy products as they are a great source of calcium which
is needed for strong, healthy teeth
Every time you eat, small bits of food may get stuck between your teeth. If they are left there, plaque may form. The bacteria in the plaque feed on sugar that they get from the food and they make an acid which starts to eat away at the enamel in your tooth, leaving tiny holes. These holes are known as cavities or dental caries. These holes will grow bigger over time. If you have a cavity, it is important to get it filled by a dentist. A toothache happens when the hole reaches all the way to the nerve endings. This means that there is a really big hole in the tooth.
