Hampton University Celebrates Black History Month
The Office of Student Activities at Hampton University plans to celebrate black history through a
series of events during the month of February. This year’s theme for this month is “A Journey to Higher
Grounds.”
Hampton students, Corinthian Tyson and Michael Little, were featured on Cox Communications’
show Hot Topics to discuss the theme and events planned.
“We want to not just focus on the past of black history,” said Tyson. “We want to focus on where
we plateaued.”
The University will host forums, such as “State of the Black Man” and “State of the Black
Woman” where panelists will discuss issues within the black community. The topics will include
education, health care, employment, relationships, and more. The events will be held in the Student
Center Atrium on Monday, Feb. 20 and Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m., respectively.
The “State of the Black Greek” will feature panelists sharing issues that involve the Pan-Hellenic
council, including admittance into fraternities or sororities and hazing. The session will take place in the
Student Center Atrium on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
The Office of Student Activities will also host an All Day Black Cinema event in the Student
Center Theater on Thursday, Feb. 16. Various movies that feature black actors, producers, and directors
will be shown including “The Color Purple” and Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing.”
Hampton will culminate the month-long celebration with the Black Heritage Extravaganza on
Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in Ogden Hall. The presentation will showcase all the talent that Hampton has to
offer, including skits, poetry, dance, and musical performances. Audience members will walk away with
black history knowledge and empowerment.
All events are free and open to the public. For more information on events, please contact the
Office of Student Activities at (757) 727-5691 or visit www.hamptonu.edu.
