September 2019
We are still using Griggs Raptor System is. If you are not familiar with the Raptor system, let me explain. Raptor is a computerized system that students and parents will sign into school using a computer and barcodes. ***All tardy students must be WALKED IN BY AN ADULT. Students will sign in through the computer using their barcode (provided in the office). All tardies are marked unexcused unless you have paper documentation for an appt. ***Parents/Guardian/Visitors will need their Driver’s License to sign in for lunch, conference with staff, see the nurse, volunteer, and to check a student out. ATTENDANCE OF CHILDREN IN SCHOOL IS MANDATORY BY STATE LAW. Students are required to maintain 95% attendance
or better. Every absence from school must have a written excuse, by a doctor or a parent. After 8 parent excuses, every
absence must have a doctor’s excuse. Students shall bring a written excuse on the first day of return following an absence,
and no later than three days after the absence. If a child has more than 8 excused absences with parent notes, MCPSS
policy states that other absences without a doctor’s excuse will be coded UNEXCUSED. A doctor’s excuse should be
obtained upon any visit to a doctor. Any absence not explained with a written note within three days of the student’s return
will be considered unexcused. A student’s attendance will drop below 95% if the student is absent more than 8 times in a
school year.
September 23-27 is the 3rd Annual Take Your Parent to PE Week. This is a national campaign to introduce
parents to their child's physical education program and to encourage parents to be engaged throughout the
school year while being physically active together at home and in the community. Families are invited to
come and join their loved one during their PE time on Thursday, September 26. Please limit the number to
1 or 2 adults. You will need to come prepared to walk with your loved one. We will be introducing our
"Star Chasers" program that we do with the kids every week. Please park and sign in at the gym.
The PE schedule is as followed: 3rd grade and Dr. Smith’s Class: 8:55-9:40, 4th grade and Pre-K: 9:45-10:30, 5th grade:
10:35-11:20, 2nd grade: 11:55-12:40, Kindergarten and Ms. Wilcox’s Class: 12:45-1:30, & 1st grade: 1:35-2:20.

September is Attendance
Awareness Month Please make sure to have your student
at school every day, on time, no tardies
and no early dismissals. Please
schedule doctor/dentist appt., etc…
after school hours or during school
holidays.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS! Parent involvement
makes more impact than anything else does.
WHAT IS CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM? Chronic
absence refers to students who are repeatedly
absent during the school year for both excused
and unexcused absences. When we reduce
chronic absence, we improve graduation rates,
increase academic achievement, and give young
people the best chance at success in their adult
life.
When students improve their attendance rates,
they improve their academic prospects and
chances for graduating!
DID YOU KNOW: Research shows that missing 10
percent of school negatively affects a student’s
academic performance? That is just two days a
month.
