Keynote Address: It’s Okay Not Being OkayColleen Kelly Alexander, Lifelong Athlete, Motivational Speaker, Author of Gratitude in Motion, & Brain Injury SurvivorColleen Kelly Alexander is a lifelong athlete and motivational speaker who inspires positive change, contribution, determination and actionable gratitude. In 2011, Colleen was run over by a freight truck, and after five weeks in a coma and twenty-nine surgeries later, Colleen survived. Rather than let the trauma and PTSD control her life, she became determined to find a way to make something positive from her pain. Colleen will share her personal experience as a patient with a Chiari malformation and trauma survivor, along with the impact of brain injury on her life.
Annual Awards Ceremony - Sarah Raskin, Board President, BIAC
10:00 - 10:15 AM Exhibitor Break & Refreshments10:15 - 11:45 AM Session I (Participants attend one workshop) A. Updates, Best Practice, and Critical Care Management of the Patient with Traumatic Brain InjuryMark Landreneau, MD, Director of Neurocritical Care, St. Francis Hospital & Medical Care With advancing science and technologies, outcomes following brain injury are continually being challenged. This workshop will provide an overview of current evidence-based advances in the management from severe traumatic brain injury. These advances will be presented from a neurocritical care perspective and include the role of all healthcare professionals involved in this stage of recovery.
B. Consequences of a Traumatic Brain Injury on Spatial Visual ProcessingWilliam Padula, OD, Padula Institute of Vision Rehabilitation Following brain injury, there has traditionally been greater emphasis placed on individual visual dysfunctions that result, but not as much focus on the visual process. This presentation will introduce you to a new perspective for understanding and addressing the visual process, one with a more integrated approach of how information gathered through the kinesthetic, proprioceptive, vestibular, and tactile systems, is matched with visual information to feed sensorimotor systems. By applying the theories of the bi-modal visual process, and treating the imbalance or interference caused by neurological events with yoked prisms, evidence has shown improvements in midline posture, gait, and balance.
C. Self-Determination is for EVERYONESherry Ostrout, MSW, Director, Government Initiatives, Connecticut Community Care, Inc. and Therese Nadeau, MSW, Instructor, Connecticut Community Care, Inc. This workshop will provide an overview of self determination, person centeredness, and dignity of risk as it pertains to everyone including people who have acquired brain injuries. Presenters will highlight examples we all experience in life, especially as it pertains to social and intimate relationships with others. Tools based on self determination, individual choice and informed decision making will be discussed. In addition, workshop participants will have an opportunity to have an open dialogue about topics that providers experience and have questions about, including examples that providers find challenging and “risky”. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of principals including: dignity and respect, relationships, choice, control, dreaming and community contributions with real-life examples.

11:45 AM - 12:45 PM Exhibitor Break & Lunch12:45 - 2:15 PM Session II (Participants attend one workshop)D. Aging with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Chronic Condition?Steven Flanagan, MD, Chair, Department of Rehabilitation, Rusk - NYU Langone HealthTraumatic brain injury is often considered by some in the medical world as an isolated event, with a distinct beginning and end. However, research has revealed that people with TBI are at increased risk for longer term problems that may impact longevity and overall health. This workshop will review data regarding the long-term effects of TBI, its potential impact on health and preliminary recommendations to health care providers on how to address it.
E. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Veteran Populations Joseph Kulas, PhD, ABPP, Director, BRAIN Clinic Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) has been described as the “signature injury” of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, owing to the high number of soldiers exposed to improvised explosive devices, mortar fire, and other concussive munitions. When these Veterans present to the VA upon return from deployment and leaving active duty, many have reported symptoms that are attributed to the effects of their experiences in combat, often to MTBI that they describe. This workshop will present current information concerning the impact that MTBI has had on Veterans, many of whom have returned from active war zones. Recent research on the functional outcomes, complicating factors, and controversies surrounding the assessment and treatment of those with MTBI will be discussed with the aim of providing a fuller understanding of the relevant issues surrounding this complicated diagnostic entity.
F. The Opioid Crisis Complicated by Traumatic Brain InjuryKevin Sevarino, MD, PhD, Consulting Psychiatrist and Dorine Scolnic, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker, Gaylord Specialty HealthcareThe opioid crisis has impacted the treatment of and recovery from traumatic brain injury. This presentation will explore how pre-existing opioid use disorder (OUD) affects the course of recovery from brain injury. This workshop will explore how discharge planning is affected by a patient’s prior history of OUD and other substance use disorders in determining treatment and services.
2:15 - 2:30 PM Afternoon Break & Refreshments2:30- 4:00 PM Session III (Participants attend one workshop)G. The Grass is Always Greener: Traumatic Brain Injury & the Clinical Utility of Medical MarijuanaJoseph Trettel, MD, PhD, Medical Director, Neuropsychiatry, Ayer Neuroscience Institute - Hartford Healthcare and Gayle Klein, MD, DocPlusThe neuropsychiatric symptoms of TBI can be some of the most disabling. Unfortunately, these are symptoms that 1) people can’t see from the outside, 2) may be present in mild-to-severe brain injury, and 3) generally lack accepted guidelines for best-practice treatment and management. Presently, our standard medical approaches do not appear good enough, specifically when it comes to all-around restoring quality of life after TBI. In this workshop, we will revisit the potential usefulness of cannabis-derived therapeutics as a medical treatment.
H. Interdisciplinary Team Approach to Behavioral Challenges in the Rehabilitation SettingMark Powers, PA-C, Physician Assistant; Dorine Scolnic, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker; and Heather Hancourt, RN, BSN, CRRN, Nurse Manager, Rehabilitation Division, Gaylord Specialty HealthcareThis workshop will provide techniques and strategies of an innovative interdisciplinary educational team approach, focusing on the importance of collaboration and early identification of behavioral challenges. This panel presentation will address the importance of a comprehensive therapeutic plan positively impacting participation in rehabilitation, and deviations encountered at various stages of the recovery process causing changes in behavior.
I. Brain Injury: To Disclose or Not Disclose - That is the QuestionLydia Velez-Herrera, CEO/Founder, Lilly Sin Barreras (Panel Facilitator); Mark Lukas, CRC, CBIS, Brain Injury Specialist, BIAC; Jeremy Stein, Esq., Executive Director, CT Against Gun Violence; Jay Waller, PT, CBIS, Physical Therapist, CT Orthopaedic Specialists; Dan Urban, MSHA, Transition Coordinator, Yale New Haven HospitalDisclosing a brain injury can be a consideration for individuals when they are starting a new job, entering into a new relationship, or transitioning into a variety of new situations. To disclose or not to disclose is a personal decision, and the choice can vary depending on the person and the situation. This workshop will provide an overview of what goes into deciding to disclose or not disclose, including a panel discussion of individuals who made the decision to disclose or not disclose, as well as questions to consider, pros and cons of disclosing, and a practical approach to assist individuals throughout the decision making process.
