King, handwritten plans for special events, fashion shows and extravaganzas, holokū, holomū, mu’umu’u, designer clothes and accessories , personal linen and photographs. Title: The Bina Mossman Collection Size: 11 linear feet Bulk dates: 1893-1990 Provenance: Most of the collection was donated in 2011 to Kamehameha Schools by Bina Mossman’s granddaughter and namesake, Bina Mossman (KSG 1963) Chun. Some color photographs were donated by another granddaughter, Ipolani Whittle (KSG 1963) Cole. Languages: In Hawaiian; in English Access: By permission of the archivist or director. Citation: Kamehameha Schools. Users of this collection are responsible for using the materials in conformance with U.S. copyright laws and are responsible for obtaining permissions where necessary. Historical note Bina Mossman lived during a period of historical change. On January 17, 1893, ten days after Bina’s birth, Queen Lili’uokalani was removed as the sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Hawai’i by the U.S. military and American supporters. Hawai’i was annexed to the United States of America as a territory in 1898, and became its 50th state in 1959. Tourism and the U.S. military presence increased in economic importance when the sugar and pineapple industries declined because of foreign competition in the 1960’s. Biographical note Guillhermina Kailipaina Nieper was born in Honolulu, Kingdom of Hawai’i on January 7, 1893 to Susan Titcomb and John Theodore Nieper of German parentage. Susan Titcomb Nieper was a Hawaiian musician and chanter. Guillhermina used the name Kailipaina. As a youngster, when a teacher called her Bina, she preferred it according to granddaughter Ipo Whittle Cole. Bina graduated from McKinley High School in 1911 and Phillips Commercial School in 1912. She was the only daughter with four older brothers. The family home was at Pālama. In 1914, she formed the Bina Mossman Glee Club, the first of its kind with about thirty women that entertained at prominent private and government parties and functions. During Washington Place rehearsals, Bina credits Queen Lili’uokalani with Hawaiian enunciation help. They performed until 1944, when her political activities in the

Territorial legislature and elsewhere increased. From 1936-1940, she shared Hawaiian music with the public on a radio program narrated by Charles E. King. Her glee club also sang at political rallies. During the 1920’s, Bina campaigned for Prince Kuhio who was a candidate for Territorial Delegate to the U.S. Congress. In 1922, she was a secretary at the Hawaiian Homes Commission. In 1925, she was a secretary at the State Retirement system and worked at various other positions until 1949. She married Richard N. Mossman, a family friend. He was a Matson Navigation dock clerk, then a timekeeper for the Dillingham railroad. He served one term as a representative in the Territorial legislature. From 1931-38, he worked for Mayor Wright and died from heart disease in 1940 at the age of 48. Bina was the first woman to serve in the Territorial legislature first elected in 1938, then 1942 and 1944. From 1940 to 1957, she was elected Republican National Committeewoman. From 1953 to 1957, she was Territorial High Sheriff with a staff of 5 sheriffs.
In 1952, Bina formed the Ka’ahumanu Choral Group and continued as director until 1968. Aware of the growing importance of tourism to Hawai’i, her group staged performances at hotels and venues on the continent including the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. Her group also toured major Asia countries.
Some of Bina’s published musical compositions are: Niu Haohao He Ono Ka Pua Ui Mapuana Kuualoha Kuulei Stevedore Hula Lae Lae
Bina directed the first and second Holokū Ball for the Hawaiian Civic Club. She created costumes for these balls. She belonged to the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu, The Ka’ahumanu Society, Daughters of Hawai’i, Hui Poni Moi and the Republican Women’s Club. She became curator at Queen Emma Summer Palace from 1958-1968. She on the grounds of the Summer Palace and in Waikīkī. Toward the end of her life, she lived with her granddaughter and namesake, Bina Chun, on the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus. Her musical compositions and her life were featured during the 2017 Song Contest.
She had two sons and two daughters. As of 1985, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are:
