The HistoryMakers

The HistoryMakers is a national 501(c)(3) non profit educational institution founded in 1999, committed topreserving, developing and providing easy access to an internationally recognized, archival collection ofthousands of African American video oral histories. The HistoryMakers is the single largest archival collection ofits kind in the world designed to promote and celebrate the successes and to document movements, events andorganizations that are important to the African American community and to American society.

The HistoryMakers is the next methodic and wide-scale collection effort since the WPA Slave Narratives Projectfrom 1936 to 1938. The HistoryMakers goal is to complete 5,000 interviews of both well-known and unsungAfrican American HistoryMakers. In recording messages of leadership, achievement and perseverance embodiedin these life stories, The HistoryMakers has disseminates its holdings through traditional and interactive media aswell as public programs, special events, an interactive website and a unique digital archive.

B.B. King

B.B. King was born Riley B. King in Itta Bena, Mississippi on September 16, 1925. After his mother's and

grandmother's deaths left him on his own at the age of ten, King began playing on street corners for dimes. Kinghitchhiked to Memphis in the mid-1940s. His first big break came from WDIA radio in West Memphis, where hewas given a weekly performance plugging the health tonic, Pepticon. In the early 1950s, King signed a contractwith Modern Records and made his first recordings. In the years following, King moved from the chitlin circuit ofthe south to concert halls, amphitheaters, and resort hotels. With his 1966 signature hit, The Thrill is Gone, B.B.King, for the first time, achieved success on the popular charts. He began to play for white audiences, and in1969, he made his first network TV appearance on the "Tonight Show," and in 1971 he performed live on the EdSullivan Show. B.B. King was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Rock and RollHall of Fame in 1987.

Isaac Hayes

Entertainer Isaac Hayes was born in Covington, Tennessee, on August 20, 1942. Following the death of hisparents, he moved in with his grandparents in Memphis. Leaving school in the ninth grade, he began performingat various clubs in town. He returned to night school and recorded his first album in 1962. Hayes’ breakthroughalbum, Hot Buttered Soul, came in 1969, and in 1971 he wrote the soundtrack to the movie Shaft, which won himan Oscar. Continuing to record albums, Hayes also began to act, and had his first major role in 1974’s TruckTurner. Other file roles for Hayes included Dr. Doolittle and a remake of Shaft. Hayes served as the spokesmanfor the World Literacy Crusade and had a radio program on KISS-FM. He also established restaurants. In 2002,Hayes was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Hayes passed away on August 10, 2008 at the age of 65.

This collection contains footage, administrative reocrds and photographs from The HistoryMakers - SpecialCollection: An Evening With B.B. King filmed on June 1, 2004, in Chicago, Illinois, and was recorded on 49Betacam SP videocassettes. This collection contains raw video footage of the event, edited versions of theinterview footage, photographs from the event, detailed records of the fundraising for the event, records of theproduction of the live event, the editing process of the video footage, the airing of the program on different PBSstations as well as the distribution of the program on DVD.
