HELLO ALL

First off, I would like to say, greetings from Evangel!

I know a lot of you are looking at several schools and wondering

how in the world you are going to decide where to go. As you look

into all of your options, I want to encourage you to look for

something more than a place to simply get an education. I know

that in my time at Evangel God has taken me places that I

could never have reached on my own. College is one of the

most exciting times of your life, and Evangel has so much

more to offer than simply an education. Evangel is a place

where you can grow spiritually and build relationships

that will last a lifetime; an experience that you will

never forget, filled with endless opportunities. As you

search for a college, I encourage you to remember

that you’re looking for so much more than a place to

earn your degree. You’re looking for a place that

will change your life.

God Bless,

Josh DeForest

The spring of 2010 is going to be a busy but productive one for students involved in theatre arts at Evangel. David Smith, director of theatre arts, once again has big plans for the spring production. This year, students in the theatre program will have a chance to perform in an operetta with students from the Music Department.

The spring performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Makado will be jointly directed by Smith and Jane Berg, instructor of voice. The production is scheduled for the final weekend in February, which is right before the spring production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Professor Smith plans to follow traditional Shakespearean style when directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a great undertaking for both director and students, but he has high hopes that the show will display the immense talent and hard work of his students.

The students involved in theatre arts rounded off their busy fall semester of student-directed productions and one-act shows with their auditions for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They dove right into preparation for the upcoming spring shows and have definitely shown enthusiasm for the upcoming semester’s roster of productions. It will undoubtedly be a season of great growth and experience for the students involved.

Interested in theatre??? Check out what’s going on in the theatre arts program this upcoming semester!

Europe, being rich in culture and history, was the destination for Evangel Concert Orchestra’s 2009 sum-mer tour. A group of 41 Evangel students, along with their luggage and instruments, traveled throughout France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and the Czech Republic. The group, led by Dr. Larry Dissmore, served with several missionaries and translators during their month of service in Europe.

While on the tour, the orchestra ministered at several churches, a Teen Challenge center, a nationwide drug and alcohol recovery program, and several other venues. “In each country, we advertised our performances as a ‘concert,’ rather than just being a musical presentation. Several of our students would give their tes-timonies during the service, and many times there would be an altar call at the end, after several musical numbers and a time of worship,” said Leah Meinhardt, junior Advertising and Public Relations major, who participated in the tour.

The concerts provided a non-threatening en-vironment for Europeans who might not have otherwise gone to a church service. Often, the services were overflowing with peo-ple, and guests would have to stand. In each city, members of several churches opened their homes for the orchestra to stay with them. Most often, the hosts did not speak English, which made communication very difficult. How-ever, they were always able to find a common ground: faith.

The orchestra members, although excited about the work that God was doing, grew tired after several performances. The change in time zones, their busy schedule, long bus rides, and constantly changing environments, had taken its toll on the students. However, as Meinhardt explained, God renewed their strength. “Somehow, we always made it through and played well and had an impact,” she said. God’s hand was unquestionably involved in the details of the Concert Orchestra’s European tour. He ministered not only to the Europeans who at- tended the concerts, but also to members of the orchestra. “The theme that just sticks out to me is God’s faithfulness. Many times when I thought God was going to use me to speak to others, He used them to speak to me. I was so blessed by the faithfulness of the missionaries and the people in the congregations in countries where it is so easy to be dragged down by the things of the world,” Meinhardt said.

CONCERT ORCHESTRATOURS EUROPE

By: April Hood

“God used the testimonies of the students to touch a lot of lives. Many people gave their heart to the Lord,” Meinhardt said. While the team was ministering in Amsterdam, a man gave his heart to the Lord. In becoming a Christian, he risked the rejection and loss of his entire family. There was no doubt that God was using the orchestra to reach people with the hope of Christ.

5 E-YOU SPRING 2010

Each year, EU students get the chance to take service trips all across the globe. Some service trips occur during the school year, while others take place during the summer for more extended peri-ods of time. Either way, students who participate get the chance to go see parts of the world they have never known before, and minister to those whom they have never met. Read on and discover what students are saying about their experiences!

Date: Spring Break 2010Duration: 9 days

Mission: Working with missionaries at One Way Ministry. Facilitating school assemblies, church services, and assisting local pastors. Trip directed toward children’s ministry, including activities that prevent children from becoming involved in substance abuse. Team led by Dr. Jeffery Fulks, Director of Graduate Studies. Open to all majors.

Testimony from a previous trip: “God opened my eyes to the need worldwide. He opened my eyes to the need for salvation and the financial needs. People are living in horrible conditions. As Christians, we need to respond to that with the love of Christ.” Daniel Sandoz, senior Government major, 2009 Peru team member and 2010 Guatemala team member.

ne of the greatest things about college is the chance to experience firsthand what you are learning. Three students in Dr. Diane Awbrey’s class on Jane Austen literature had the chance to do so when they took a two-week trip to England in the spring of 2009.

The group navigated across England, stopping at their desired destinations and enjoying their shared experience of a lifetime. They were able to stay in local bed and breakfasts

and hotels and walk the streets of London, Winchester, Chawton, Bath, Gloucester, Stratford, and Oxford—all places where famous literary artists have left their eternal mark. Dr. Awbrey said that the trip could not have gone any better, and that she enjoyed the chance to spend one-on-one time with her students and share their learning experience. What made the trip even more special was the chance to study and experience the history of locations that Jane Austen and other great writers experienced themselves. The group was even able to visit the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, where William Shakespeare was baptized and buried, as well as visiting The Kilns, the home of C.S. Lewis.

Kalene Baker, one of the students who participated in the trip, summed up her experience when she said, “ The Jane Austen tour was an amazing opportunity for me, not only to further study the literary figures I admire, but also to see the beautiful sights of England. My favorite part of the trip was staying in the town of Winchester. Jane Austen attended the cathedral in this town, and we were able to attend a wonderful Evensong service there. Also, going to The Kilns in Oxford, where C.S. Lewis lived, was a major highlight for me. I was able to learn more about the life of a writer who has greatly influenced my faith. Overall, I loved spending time studying and touring with a group of students who encouraged me to grow in my love for literature.”

When you attend your first day of class, you enter the doors with high hopes for your professor. One of

the greatest things is when the professor goes above and beyond your expectations, and you get more

than an education; you get an experience. Dr. Robert Turnbull, French professor, is one of those highly

hoped-for professors whose class you leave every day having learned more than you ever expected.

It is important for a foreign language teacher to know the culture of the language that he or she is

teaching, and Dr. Turnbull has an amazing background of French cultural experience. He and his

parents moved to Haiti when he was only 18 months old, to the Dominican Republic one year later,

and then back to Haiti where he attended an international high school in Port-au-Prince and spent his

senior year at a French-speaking high school.

After graduating from California State University- Fullerton, Dr. Turnbull continued

his education at the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales in Paris and

received a Diploma of Advanced Studies and later graduated from New York Uni-

versity with a Ph.D. in French Studies. During the time of his continued education,

Dr. Turnbull and his wife spent two years living in Paris and another in Brussels,

Belgium, where he taught at Continental Theological Seminary.

Each class session with Dr. Turnbull brings about some new bit of informa-

tion that can only be taught by someone who has experienced the French

culture firsthand. His passion for teaching is evident in everything that he does,

and many students find it difficult not to share the same appreciation for the

French culture as he exudes in class.

Cody Henderson first heard about the Ride: Well Tour, a humanitarian bicycling excursion across America, from friend and fellow classmate Brady Miles. “He told me that he had signed up and had begun his training and that I should look into it. So, of course,

being the curious being that I am, I checked it out,” Cody said.

It wasn’t long before Cody knew that he wanted to be a part of this adventure. “At first, the thrill, excitement, and challenge of riding a bicycle across the country consumed the root of my motivation. But the more and more I looked into what Blood: Water Mission and Venture Expeditions were all about, the more my focus turned to spreading awareness about the blood and water crisis in Africa and challenging individuals and communities to actively participate in combating this problem,” Cody said.

At the point of his acceptance into the Ride: Well Tour, Cody wasn’t even sure he could still ride a bike. He spent countless hours in preparation and training during the months leading up to the tour. A total of 19 daring bicyclists, including Cody, set out from Long Beach, California, on June 14, beginning their treacherous journey. The expedition would ultimately raise more than $100,000 for the Ride: Well Mission, providing clean water and HIV-free blood for communities in Marsabit, Kenya.

The Ride: Well Mission, founded by members of the band Jars of Clay, is an organization dedicated to providing clean water to communities stricken with HIV and AIDS all across Africa. The mission joined forces with Venture Community, a Christian group whose purpose is to empower individuals for humanitarian works. The two programs organized a tour, taking volunteers through approximately 3,600 miles of desert, mountains, and plains, a total of 10 states—all in the name of charity. Cody believes that his experiences as a student at Evangel prepared him for the Ride: Well Tour. “Evangel is the reason I

went on this trip. It was there that I really stepped out of my comfort zone and began to put my curiosity to work. It was there I found my confidence. It was there that I became a doer of the Word. It was there that I formed a group of people

that would hold me accountable. And it was there that I was challenged to be a ‘World Changer’.” And in the eyes of Marsabit, Kenya, that’s exactly what he is.

Heather Cherie Photography

Heather Amer has always had an eye for creative beauty and a pas-sion to one day open her own business, but she never thought that the two would eventually coincide. Heather was always the designated photographer for family events and vacations because of her natural ability to capture the brilliance of each moment. Heather says, “I have a great appreciation for beauty and vibrant colors. I think you can see that in my photos. Fresh, vibrant, happy, beauty.”

People soon began to take notice of Heather’s great talent and, after graduation, family friends began to request that she photograph their special occasions. That was when Heather realized that she could turn the hobby that she loved into a career. Although Heather takes great pride in her work and is happy with the success of her business, she says that her plans do not stop here. “Eventually I would love to be involved with photography for missions and humanitarian work internationally. I feel so blessed that God has given me the opportunity to do something I love. He has orchestrated the details every step of the way and has really given me a heart for the clients with whom I interact. I love it when clients tell me they can’t stop smiling when they look at their photos! As I stay close to Him, I look forward to the opportunities He will continue to open for me through photography.”

Every college student, at some point, will experience the

infamous all-night study session. During my sophomore

year, my “all-nighter” turned into 72 hours of cramming

for finals. The only thing that got me through those three

sleepless days was a daily stop at a Springfield coffee

shop for a steaming cup of caffeine-infused coffee. Not

only did the stops provide much-needed caffeine, but

they were a great change of scenery after hours locked

in my dorm room. Here are some local favorites where

you can get your java fix.

“I thank God every day to be at Evangel,” said Bethany Wenthe, Evangel junior. For Bethany, an education at Evangel University is a prized possession, something that she does not take for granted.

Bethany began the first semester of her junior year with great expectations. “I was excited to be floor president and share a suite with my close friends,” she said. Bethany, an English major from Kansas City, Missouri, found herself at a crossroads shortly after the semester began. She was excited to be back at Evangel, but during her financial registration process, she encountered a problem. “I realized I would need a loan. However, the loan process was exhaustive, and in the end I was denied the loans for which I had applied,” Bethany said. At that point, she began making plans to return home for the semester to work, putting her aca-demic plans on hold. “When I realized this for the first time, I was devastated,” Bethany said. Although the decision to leave Evangel was extremely difficult, family and friends rallied around Bethany in prayer and fasting, believing that God would provide. Almost every night, the girls of Spence First South, Bethany’s residence floor, held prayer meetings to lift up her needs. Bethany’s professors and financial aid counselors prayed, too. “The school worked in-tensively to help me solve my financial issues so I would not have to leave Evangel, but it just did not seem to be coming together,” Bethany said. Feeling hopeless, Bethany packed up her belongings and returned home. It was only one day after she returned home that her prayers were answered. “Everything miraculously came together, and I was able to resume my studies at Evangel,” she said, “The excitement was inexpressible.” Bethany realizes just how blessed she is to attend Evangel and believes that it is only due to the faithful prayers of others that she is able to continue her studies. “Not a day goes by that I’m not thankful,” Bethany said. “I believe God wanted me to be at Evangel, and the chal-lenges I faced with my finances were minute compared to the majesty of God.”
