DIGITAL CINEMA

The digital cinema revolution is now movingtowards 4k (4096 pixels over 2160 lines),which offers an enhanced image on largescreens. Several dozen major feature filmshave been produced using 4k cameras.

ULTRA HD FORMATS & IMPLEMENTATION

Two formats exist in Ultra HD: QuadHDTV/4k TV (3840 pixels over 2160 lines)and 8k TV (7860 pixels over 4320 lines).

Ultra HD will provide an unprecedentedviewing experience, with cinema-like picturequality. Consumer equipment, mainly TV sets,is expected to start reaching the market in2013/ 2014, and on a larger scale from 2015.

The take-off of Ultra HD should be facilitatedby the forthcoming implementation of anew compression standard, HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding).

ULTRA HD VIA SATELLITE

Ultra HD will require significant transmis-sion capacity, that some terrestrial systems will not be able to provide everywhere immediately.
