PROTOTYPE INFO: TheEMDGP18beganproductioninlate1959andwasbasedonthebuilder’sextraordinarilysuccessfulGP9,althoughthelattermodelwasstillinproductionatthetime.TheGP18isconsideredthelastofthebuilder’s“firstgeneration”models.SimilarinappearancetotheGP7andGP9,theGP18wasslightlymorepowerfulandcamewiththeoptionofaloworhighshortcabhood,somethingthathadonlybeenuponspecialrequestwithEMD’sfirsttworoadswitchermodels.ItusedthefinalversionofGeneralMotorsfirstlocomotiveprimemover,the16-cylindermodel567D1whichcouldproduce1,800horsepower,themostpowerfulintheseriesuptothattime.Atjustover56feetinlengththeGP18wasthesamelengthasitspredecessormodelsandwasvisuallyverysimilar,withtheexceptionofnewradiatorgrillswhichwerealsousedontheGP20.
WhilethousandsofGP7sandGP9swereproducedjustafewhundredGP18swereultimatelybuiltforalittlemorethantwodozenrailroads.Today,severalGP18sremaininoperationonnumerousshortlinesandindustrialoperationsaroundthecountry.
