Improve Your Data Center’s PUE
Before Power and Cooling Optimization
After Power and Cooling Optimization
PUE stands for Power Use Eff ectiveness. It is a measure of Data Center Effi ciency. Your Data Center’s PUE is taken by dividing your total facility power by your IT power – the power consumed by your computer loads. If your company’s Data Center uses 150kW/h of electricity to operate 50kW/h of computer loads, then your PUE would be 3. Electron Metal AIG can improve your Data Center’s PUE by enhancing your cooling system’s performance. Implementing Electron Metal AIG’s Thermal Containment Solutions is a proven way to safely get more capacity out of your data center, while spending less on electricity.

Hot aisle and cold aisle deployment layouts for Data Center cooling have been a common practice for years. However, with today’s increased heat loads this layout scheme has become diffi cult to manage and can end up being tremendously ineffi cient. Today’s mechanical experts are strongly recommending air containment rooms or systems to help isolate hot air from cold air, dramatically increasing cooling effi ciencies. Electron Metal AIG can off er solutions for either Hot Air or Cold Air containment systems.

Our LAN racks are an ideal solution for networking storage and workstations. The racks feature modular components and construction providing almost limitless adjustability and customization. With its open design, it allows easy access to both the front and rear of your equipment. Each rack features concealed cable management in its vertical members, as well as through the horizontal stiffeners, to keep your cabling in order. Shelves and other accessories can be adjusted in increments. All our racks feature a simple “hook on” system for shelves and accessories. Your components simply hook onto the LAN frame, without the need for any special tools or hardware.
Double LAN Rack
Our LAN racks are also available in a double configuration. The rack includes long support legs on both sides for maximum stability. Mounting holes are equipped on the front and rear of the rack to allow shelves and other equipment to be installed on both sides simultaneously. Great for smaller areas that require more capacity with a smaller footprint.

Top 4 Things to Consider When Ordering a Cabinet
1. CompatibilityThe number one concern for end users is will the IT equipment mount or fi t in the cabinet. The answer is typically yes. The mounting rails in most cabinets are built to industry standards that guarantee interoperability. The bigger question is will your cabinet be able to house your current and future equipment depth, cabling requirements and cooling needs? Can it be expanded if you need more depth in the future? Does it off er enough cable entry points? Can cooling options be added? Although cable management and cooling issues are close, the number one reason for replacing existing cabinets is because new electronic equipment will not fi t. Electron Metal AIG’s cabinets have been designed so that extensions can be easily added in the future. We also have many cable management and cooling options so that total replacement of the cabinets should often not be required. We have added these features to future proof the investment our customers make with us. 2. Environmental RequirementsThere are many environmental considerations when ordering a cabinet. Will the cabinet be in a clean room or a dirty location? Will it be subject to dust, moisture, hot or cold environments etc. The basic environmental conditions are typically planned for, but what is often missed is how much heat the equipment is going to generate and can the cabinet selected exhaust that much heat? All computer and electronic equipment create heat. Your cabinets need to be able to dissipate that heat effi ciently, or your equipment will potentially overheat, shutdown, and in the worst cases be physically damaged. If this is planned for, the next question needs to be what happens if the heat load increases? Cabinet heat loads have incrementally been increasing for several years. Rack power and heat loads that were once considered impractical are now common. New, high density computer designs can increase heat density to as much as 30kW/h per rack. High density computing brings a new set of design challenges for cabinets. Can future onsite modifi cations be made to improve cooling effi ciency and performance? Our cabinet designs are optimized for effi cient cooling now. Using our retrofi t kits, we are easily compatible with various cooling topologies and have non-liquid solutions tested to exhaust 25kW/h per cabinet. Using Electron Metal AIG’s Thermal containment solutions can save thousands in annual electrical expenses, and lower your company’s carbon footprint. Call us for an onsite evaluation today. 3. Cable ManagementAs heat loads and power densities grow, so does the structured cabling system that supports it. Data Centers have to provide higher bandwidth to properly deliver services to internal and external customers. Higher bandwidth means higher switch port density, and much thicker cables which are diffi cult to manage. Proper cable management is critical. Cable pathways that used to support legacy applications like CAT5e will quickly become a bottleneck as your network migrates to Category 6A and beyond. High density switches now use up to 1536 Category 6 cables in a single cabinet. Cabinets used with a small space have an effi cient footprint and make great use of valuable data center fl oor space, but can easily be the wrong choice for applications requiring high density cable management. Electron Metal AIG helps you make the right cabinet selection for applications of today and tomorrow. 4. Power & GroundingMore data processing = More power. Port densities are on the rise. Server virtualization continues to be widely deployed, increasing the power requirements per cabinet even more. Applications that in the past used 110V single phase 15 AMP power distribution strips, now often call for 208V 3 phase 60 AMP electrical feeds. With this increased electrical load deployed in cabinets, safety is becoming a serious concern. It is estimated by industry associations that over 50% of installed IT cabinets are not grounded or bonded at all. Cabinets that are grounded often do not conform to industry specifi cations, or the Canadian Electrical Code. All Electron Metal AIG racks and cabinets have grounding/bonding points. We off er pre-terminated grounding cables, and grounding bus bars for all of our Racks and Cabinets to help ensure equipment and maintenance staff remain safe. Electron Metal AIG also off ers a variety of standard and customized vertical and horizontal power distribution units. Selecting the appropriate PDU is critical for new equipment deployments and, as with our cabinets, we can customize our PDU’s to your exact requirements. Electron Metal AIG can pre-install your customized power distribution units into your racks prior to packaging and shipping; for no additional cost.

Rack Units (RU)Standard EIA Spacing
All of Electron Metal AIG's quality products adhere to strict industry standards for Rack Units, Rack Spacing and EIA hole spacing.
One "Rack Unit" (RU) is equalto 1.75".
Each product is measured in multiples of RU's.
Mounting rails and accessories are drilled and tapped 10-32 UNF at standard EIA spacing (see chart on right). Cage nuts are also available.
Electron Metal AIG offers products in either 19" or 23" rackmount widths. We also have the capability to fabricate non-standard sizes.

PDU – Power Distribution Unit - Typically installed in a rack or cabinet. Can be vertical or horizontal with a variety of receptacle types.
Plenum - A compartment or chamber to which one or more air ducts are connected and that forms part of the air distribution system (i.e. the space above the drop ceiling).
PUE - Power Use Eff ectiveness
