1 FOREWORD
DMU-Navigator is intended for those operations which are related to the digital mock up concept.
The intend of this manual is clarifying the basic concepts that will be necessary to make the most of this tool
Most of chapters 2 and 3 are common to other CATIA V5 modules and are collected in different manuals. A brief reference to the contents
in these manuals will be made in this manual
2 SETTING UP A SESSION
2.1 INSERTING THE WORKBENCH
Select Digital Mockup DMU Navigator in the menu bar option, Start to gain access to the DMU
Navigator module.
2.2 INSERTING COMPONENTS
Select the Insert Existing Component command in the menu bar to insert a component.
If this option cannot be selected from the menu bar, right click on the specification tree and select Existing
Component from the contextual menu.
In the Insert an Existing Component, dialog box, specify the location for the file corresponding to the model
intended to be inserted and press Open.

2.3 DEFINING GROUPS
A Group is a set of products explicitly defined by means of the individual selection of products. Groups are
permanent and can be stored in the document.
1. Select a product from the geometry area or the specification tree.
2. With the CTRL key select other products to incorporate them into the initial selection
3. Select Insert Group from the menu bar or click on the Group on the tools bar. Dialog box Edit
Group and a preliminary window with the graphic depiction of selection will pop up.
4. Enter a meaningful name to identify the group and click on OK. The group is identified in the specification
tree.
5. Contents in a group can be modified double clicking on it in the specification tree or using the right hand
mouse button selecting Group 1 object Definition.
2.4 CURRENT SELECTION
Selected objet or objects make up the current selection. The listing of selected objects can be displayed using
icon Current Selection from the menu bar.
The dialog box Current Selection Panel wherein selected objects will be located will pop up. The panel
features two tabs, allowing display of specification tree or 3D visualisation of selected objects.

2.5 OBJECTS SEARCH
In the Search selection mode, selection is performed filtering the name, type, colour, etc. As well a selection is
possible by usage of two or several of the preliminary filters. (e.g., in a CATPart document wherein it is
necessary to select all the elements of the point type and red in colour)
Select Edit Search in the menu bar or click on icon Search in the tools bar, the Search dialog box will
pop up.
The example below shows an example of selection by name filtering:
2.6 COMPONENTS TRANSLATION AND ROTATION
There are two ways to translate a component:
- Entering the translation values- Selecting the geometric elements to define a translation direction
When clicking on the Translation or Rotation icon, the Move dialog box will pop up in screen.

2.7 SNAPPING COMPONENTS
The Snap allows projection of a geometric element in a component on another geometric element.
Results obtained will be different depending on the elements selected. Table below shows the different
possibilities.
For this purpose, we will click on the Snap icon in the tools bar.
Refer to the Assembly manual if needed to know more about components rotation, translation and movement.

3 NAVIGATION
3.1 NAVIGATION IN THE EXAMINE, WALK AND FLY MODE MODES
Examine ModeThe default navigation mode is the Examine Mode. The document can be examined from outside simulating
movements around it or from inside, simulating head movements or moving closer or farther (zoom in, zoom
out.
If you are in another navigation mode, you will fall back into the examine mode by clicking on icon
Walk ModeNavigating in the walk mode, is like walking forward or backwards along an horizontal plane, allowing
rotations to the left or to the right.
Select View Navigation ModeWalk to activate this mode
Fly ModeWhen navigating in the Fly Mode you will be able to move up or down on any horizontal view plane as well as
moving forward or backwards.
Click on icon to activate this mode
3.2 USING THE VIEWPOINT PALETTE
The viewpoint palette provides an easy and precise way to define the viewpoint in a document. You will be
able to translate, rotate, zoom in or out of the document's viewpoint using predetermined increments.
Select View Viewpoint Palette from the menu bar, the Viewpoint Palette dialog box will pop up.

3.3 GROUND PLANE
You can insert a visible plane at ground level in the document. This plane allows location of the "ground" level
while you navigate through the document. When a document is accessed for the first time, that plane parallel
or tangent to the lowest point in the document is considered as default ground pane.
Select View Ground from the menu bar or click on icon Horizontal Ground in the tools bar.
The plane can be repositioned as desired, X, Y or Z axis can also be set as normal to the reference plane.
Default activation is the Z axis, corresponding to the reference plane XY.
3.4 MAGNIFYING
A magnification of the view can be obtained in a different window. Select View Magnifier in the menu
bar. A small viewport appears which when moved over the view magnifies the content thereof in the additional
window.

3.5 LOOKING AT AN OBJECT
You can look at a document in a specific direction targeting through a user-defined viewpoint .
Select ViewModify Look At in the menu bar or click on icon Look At in the tools bar.
Slowly drag the mouse with the right button down and the viewing window shows up, you will see a rectangle
with two diagonals which are enlarged as the mouse is dragged. The rectangle represents the window the
future view will feature. You may have to adjust the size of the view and relocate it again.
When targeting is moved to the right hand side bottom area of the window a completely different view is
obtained
3.6 LIGHTING EFFECTS
Ambient lighting effect can be readily changed, just handling the different options displayed in the dialog box.
Select View Lighting in the menu bar or click on icon Lighting in the tools bar

3.7 DEPTH EFFECTS
This allows achieving finishes on components, such as depth effects, clipping geometry between clipping
planes and creation of fog effects by manipulating the values shown in the dialog box.
Select ViewDepth Effect in the menu bar or click on Depth Effect icon in the tools bar.

4 ANNOTATION
4.1 ADDING 3D TEXTS
Notes or comments can be inserted in your 3D document. This will be positioned in the point selected for text
insertion.
For this purpose, select Insert 3D Annotation from the menu bar or click on the 3D Annotation icon
in the tools bar.
Select the object and the text application point and enter the desired text in the 3D text field in the dialog box:
4.2 TEMPORARY MARKERS
The name of an object or co-ordinates for a point can be displayed just moving the cursor on it.
Activating the following options in the menu bar:
Analyse Graphic Messages Name
Analyse Graphic Messages Co-ordinate
Analyse Graphic Messages None (This shall be the active option to allow 3D annotations)
Temporary marker shall remain fixed on object when clicking

4.3 USING STANDARD VIEWS
You will have standard views allowing a readily change of model visualisation.
Select command View Named Views in the menu tools bar or deploying the view menu by clicking on the
icon in the tools bar to activate these views.
Select the desired view from the dialog box and then double click on it or click on OK.

4.4 USING DEFINED VIEWS
This section shows the way to generate and display non standard views, user created views.
Creation: View creation in V5 is made by means of the View Named Views option from the menu bar,
process is as follows:
Adjust the desired view by means of rotation, zoom or translation
Open the Named Views window and select Add
Change the view name
Initial view Defined view
Display: To display the user created views, open the Named Views and click on the views to be displayed.

4.5 2D VIEWS MARKER
You can complete your views with all kinds of annotations. You can insert arrows, circles, text, etc. to
document them.
For this purpose you shall activate the view with option View Named Views in the menu bar
The 2D Annotation tool bar shall be displayed when the desired view is selected.
2D annotations are associated to the view they were created in, either Standard or user defined, when the view
is changed, texts disappear, that is why they always have to be created and activated with the View Named
Views, option, if view is activated with the Standard views icon in the tools bar, texts shall not be displayed.
4.6 HYPERLINKS CREATION AND HANDLING
You can add hyperlinks on your documents and use them for different utilities, such as starting a presentation,
a spread sheet or linking to a web page. Hyperlinks can also be added to models, products and parts, as well as
to any other constituent element.
For this purpose, select Insert Add Hyperlinks from the menu bar or clicking on the icon in the tool bar.
The dialog box below will pop up:
A name can be provided for the hyperlink, however, the default name will be the name of the object.
Enter the path for the destination file in the URL block or search for it using option Browse.

5 SCENES
By mean of the scenes you can control the position and orientation for the different parts in a product, add
or remove parts, modify the Viewpoint for the scene, etc.
5.1 CREATING SCENES
1. To create a scene, click on the icon Create Scene
Dialog box Edit Scene will pop up in the screen.
2. Click on button Ok to complete scene creation. Scene background colour turns to green and object Scene 1
is highlighted in the specification tree.
4. Click on icon Exit From Scene to exit the scene and go back to the initial window.
If changes are made on the scene, this is updated.
5. When double clicking on Scene1 in the specification tree or the geometry area, the scene window will pop
up again.

5.2 ADDING COMPONENTS TO A SCENE
Document with a scene Contents in the scene
Select Product1 in the specification tree and select InsertExisting Component in the menu bar to add
components.
Then, select components to be added in the dialog box and clickOpen. Components are highlighted in the
specification tree and added in the geometry area Fig.1.
Double clicking on the Scene in the left hand bottom area of the document, Scene window will pop up, Fig.2.

Components are added and they are displayed in the specification tree. Default setting is shapes depiction
deactivated and scene visualisation is therefore not changed

To activate representation of components added, click with right mouse button on the specification tree in the
scene and select option Representations Activate Node
Components visualisation will remain without showing in the scene window.
Click on icon Exit From Scene to update changes. Now, if scene is re-edited, you will find that changes
have been made.

5.3 RESETTING A SCENE AND CHECKING COMPONENTS
Some of the components in this scene have moved
When Tools Checking Positioning is selected from the menu bar, we will be able to find out components
that moved, these will be highlighted in the scene specification tree.
Click on icon Reset Selected Products and elements will be repositioned in the scene as they were in the
initial product.

5.4 DELETING COMPONENTS
Document with a scene Contents in a scene
To remove components from a scene, select the component intended to be deleted from the specification tree
in the document and delete it, the scene is automatically updated.

5.5 EXPLODING ASSEMBLIES
Contents in a scene can be readily changed and exploded without changing anything in the original product.
Click on the Explode icon. Dialog box Explode will pop up.
Key in Apply to preview effect, use Scroll Explode to adjust components distances.
Click on icon Exit From Scene to update changes and go back to the initial window

5.6 SAVING VIEWPOINT
Viewpoint for a scene is the same as that for the initial product. You can change a scene viewpoint within it.
Modify the viewpoint to obtain the desired scene
Click on icon Save Viewpoint in the tool bar.
Click on icon Exit From Scene to go back to the initial document window.

6 PROXIMITY QUERY
Large assemblies can be quite complex, made up by many products and subproducts. You can simplify an
assembly displaying only those products you are to work with.
6.1 DMU NAVIGATOR
Proximity Query calculation is not based on the representation visualised in the session, but on a cubic
representation which corresponds to the value of the accuracy.
The detection algorithm is designed in such a manner that actual distance can be larger than the clearance
value.
Accuracy: Setting up an accuracy determines the size of cubes used to depict products in calculation. For large
assemblies, a low setting will yield a slow computation time, but result will be much more precise.
Clearance: Setting up a clearance defines an area around the reference selection within which the closest
products will be located, and farther products which will be returned for query depending on the option
selected on the Products to select will be left out.

2. Select the element in the assembly on which query is intended to be referenced. In every case, we will take
the element located in the upper area of assembly visualisation
3. Set accuracy establishing a value, 3 mm. in this case, we will leave the value for clearance in 0 mm.
4. Clicking on Apply results are displayed in the block. Result.
5. Clicking on OK products found are highlighted, both on the specification tree and the geometry area.

1. Deactivating representation
Proximity Query calculations can be performed inserting components with no shape representation associated
Select ToolsOptions in the menu bar
Click on Product on the left hand side
Click on tab Product Structure
Check option Do not activate default shapes on open in
representation area Representation
Click to conform operation
2. System cache activation
There are two different ways to set a component as available (V4 model, V5 CATPart, V5 CATProduct, etc.)
when it is inserted in a CATProduct document in the DMU Navigator.
Design mode: In this mode the exact geometry is available and inserted in the document the way it is.
Visualisation mode: In this mode the geometry representation only is available and the corresponding cgr file,
if there is any, is inserted from the system's cache.
Using the system's cache greatly reduces the time required to load data
Select ToolsOptions in the menu bar
Click on Product on the left hand side
Click on the Cache Management tab
Check the Work with the Cache System option in the Cache
Activation area
Click to confirm operation
Re-start session to update changes.
3. Inserting product
When the different components in a product are inserted, visualisation thereof is de-activated. Icon on left handside displays this condition (refer to detail).

4. When clicking on the Proximity Query icon, the Proximity Query dialog box will pop up.

7. When clicking on OK products are highlighted in the specification tree.
8. To activate representation of components found, click with the right mouse button on one of the
components highlighted in the specification tree and select option Representations Activate Node.
When components are activated, graphic depiction thereof will pop up.

8 PUBLISHING
You will be able to prepare html format reports for publishing in the enterprise's intranet. You can for example,
take a snapshot of a clash conflict detected in a simulation, add comments or annotations and select parts thatwill be inserted with a VRML link to be handled in a viewer.
1. Click on Start Publish icon in the Data Navigation tool bar or select Tools Publish Start
Publish in the menu bar.
Dialog box Select Publish File will pop up in the screen.
2. Identify the path were report is to be saved as well as the name thereof and click on save.
The Publishing Tools. tool bar will pop up
3. Click on the Snapshot icon to capture and insert a screen view into the report.
4. Click on the Text icon to add a comment:
The Publish Text dialog box will pop up
5. Enter a comment and click on OK
6. Take additional snapshots
7. Select one or more products, and click on the VRML icon to insert selected components as a VRML
link.
8. After the report is complete, click on the Stop Publish icon in the tool bar or select Tools Publish
Stop Publish.
